Varying-sized stable cracquelure mostly evident within the sky. "Pont-y Pair, North Wales" Three square and rectangular patch repairs to reverse, images can be supplied. Cleaned and revarnished, some surface dirt now in evidence, unusually it is not possible to determine any associated retouches to the front in line with patch repairs to the reverse, but obviously does not exclude this. Areas of fine stable cracquelure broadly in good and stable state of preservation.
School of Nicholas Poussin (1594-1665) French Classical figures in an Italianate landscapeOil on canvas, 49.5cm by 97cmCondition report: In fully restored condition, fairly stiffly relined, cleaned and revarnished. Fine cracquelure mostly throughout which is more pronounced in some areas and looking precarious with some further areas where the minor areas of paint have flaked away i.e. within the rocky outcrop far left-hand side and to a lesser extent within the foliage of the trees, left-hand side. Under the application of UV light shows likely two, possibly 3 courses of intervention and restoration with retouching and areas of strengthening across the sky. Large swathes and general strengthening within the darker tones throughout the foreground with some further more sporadic and delicate retouches likely of another date. Possible horizontal tear with associated retouching at the point where the lake meets the grassy foreground just right of centre.
