A pair of fine George III artificial 'Coade Stone' urn finials, late 18th century, stamped for Coade, Lambeth, the fluted ovoid bodies with domed integral covers and acorn finials, with waisted circular socles; one with stamp COADE LAMBETH 1794, the other with indistinct stamp COADE LA...; presented on square section artificial stone plinths cast with rams' masks and swags; approximately 120cm high overall, the plinths 34cm squareCoade stone is a vitrified ceramic or stoneware body developed by Mrs Eleanor Coade during the 1770s. Known components of the recipe for this distinctive pale orange material include ball clay from Dorset or Devon, flint and sand, though there was some secrecy about the exact proportions of ingredients used.Eleanor Coade and her daughter, who was also called Eleanor, ran a successful and prolific manufactory in Lambeth, and produced statuary and ornament for many royal and aristocratic houses, including by appointment to King George III, and the Prince Regent. The design of the present urns appears in Coade's 1778 trade catalogue, no. 94 (plate marked N. 2 in the Sir John Soane museum copy of the catalogue).A pair of finials of identical design, in that case not presented on plinths, were sold at Christie's, the Michael Roberts Collection of Garden ornaments, 27 September 2004, lot 278 (£35,850).A pair of similar Coade stone pedestals with rams' masks to the corners, though now lacking the swags it once had, supports a pair of vases after the Antique at Chiswick House, London. One is illustrated in John Davis, Antique Garden Ornament, the Antique Collectors' Club, 1991, p. 167, plate 4:6 Condition Report: The urns and plinths bear the usual minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age and use.The surfaces have some mottled greyer areas, likely dirt or possibly evidence of a previous finish. The exposed edges are a little chipped in places including the fluting to the ovoid bodies, as is to be expected from the lot's age and brittle material. Losses and nibbles to edges of plinths (tops and bases), one with hairline cracking to top. Surfaces of plinths quite weathered in places. Small and quite subtle restorations in a number of areas, including to the edges of the fluting on one of the domed covers, the circular top edges, and to an extent, the bases and socles. The acorn finials have darker areas to the leaves, possibly repairs/retouching. However, despite the issues stated above, the urns retain their shape and integrity of design, and remain in highly presentable condition. There is evidence of a light brown residue near one of the socles, suggesting a possible repair. Los 586

A set of three stone composition garden urns on plinths, 20th century, the fluted and everted bodies loosely of thistle form, raised on waisted socles and stepped square section bases, 109cm high, 60cm diameterThese unusual vases recall the 'Lotus' and 'tulip' shapes popularised by stone composition manufactory of Austin and Seeley during the later years of the 19th century. Vases of this type appear as early as the 1840s trade catalogue of the firm. Condition Report: Each of the surfaces worn and slightly weathered commensurate with age and outdoor exposure, including some lichen/moss.Each vase body has two long cracks running down each side. One has an old repair between the body and waisted socle, where light brown residue is visible. Some loss of definition to the leaf motif due to weathering, and minor nibbles to edges of plinths. The vases each have an identical plinth and the plinths appear to have been with these vases for some time, perhaps even from the outset. The interiors are partially filled with leaves and have not been inspected to the lowermost part.Condition Report Disclaimer

Manner of Hans Jakob Bair (Augsburg, 1574-1628), and after the painting by Hans von Aachen (German 1552-1615), a silvered bronze or lead relief plaquette of Minerva presenting Painting to the Liberal Arts, with figures before an elaborate architectural backdrop within a palmette border, circa 27cm diameterPlaquettes in lead and pewter attributed to the workshop of Augsburg master silversmith Bair are in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (BK-1958-74), and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (A.45-1927).Related literature: Ingrid Weber, Deutsche, Niederländische und Französische Renaissanceplaketten, Munich 1975, circa pp. 336-340Condition Report: The plaquette bears the usual minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age. The silvered finish is worn with some light scratching, and the underlying metal colour shines through in places. The lower left corner of the scene has some more coppery patches, possibly from a previous finish. There are also some minor darker marks the recesses of the border as well as to the background of the scene. The plaque is a little bit bent at the edges, though overall appears to be in perfectly presentable condition. The reverse has not been fitted with any implements for mounting. The metal of the substrate may be bronze or lead as catalogued, though we are not at present certain of its exact composition. Condition Report Disclaimer

A Continental patinated bronze Biblical relief plaque of Noah Leaving the Ark, after Raphael, possibly 17th century, with the figures standing before the large vessel beyond and with descending pairs of animals, 45.5 x 36 cmThe present relief takes after a scene in Raphael's Loggia in the Apostolic Palace, in the Vatican. During the 17th century, the composition was reproduced in engravings including by Cornelis Visscher in Northern Europe (note for example Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, 1963.30.37060). It is likely that the present plaque, which is possibly Flemish in origin, is derived from such a source.  Condition Report: Patina mid brown, with lighter sections to the raised parts and minor patches of verdigris oxidisation to edges, more so to reverse where there are also areas of light wash possibly result of previous mounting. Minor nicks and losses to sides, some possibly result of previous drilling/mounting. Some flattening to Noah's nose and some surface dappling (likely due to casting) to the upper backs of lowermost animals. The plaque is slightly bent. An Italian ebony veneered, ebonised and hardstone specimen table top casket, probably Florence, possibly 18th century, inset with panels of lapis lazuli and Sicilian jasper, strung with Siena, the tapered sarcophagus form body with bold scrolls and a tiered finial, raised on bun feet, the front opening to reveal a softwood interior with fragmentary red wax seal inside, 51cm high, 44cm wide, 31cm deepThe present casket, with its bold scrolls and architectural outline, shows similarities to examples created in Italy, particularly Rome and Florence, during the 17th and 18th centuries. Its forms echo tabernacle frames of the time, such as the renowned pietra dura inset example in the Church of San Lorenzo, Florence. This example is discussed in Anna Maria Giusti, L'arte delle pietre dure da Firenze all'Europa, Le Lettere, 2005, p.31Condition Report: Some old splits and small sections of repair to the veneers overall, including the corners surrounding the panels and the top scrolls, and possibly the finial. The casket may also have a lacquer of sorts as it is very shiny, and deposits of a lacquer like substance are visible between the lower mouldings. Two or three corners of the light stringing have been filled. One section of lapis appears to have been repaired/restored.The specimens are naturally variegated in colour and therefore not entirely uniform throughout. One of the panels is a little loose inside the frame. The surface of the wood is a little scratched. Two old splits to the underside of the casket. Please refer to additional lot images for visual reference to condition. The casket opens by pressing a subtle button, and while the writer of the report has been able to do so on one occasion, the mechanism is a little tough and requires some finesse.Condition Report Disclaimer
