charcoal on paper mounted, framed and under glass image size 16cm x 24cm, overall size 33cm x 40cm Provenance: the artist's studio sale, Thomson Roddick. Note: Charles Oppenheimer was born in Manchester in 1875. His mother was Scottish and the family owned a mosaic manufacturing business. He studied under Walter Crane at Manchester School of Art and in Italy. Although not a native Scot, (he didn't settle in Scotland until he was in his mid-thirties) he was passionate about his adopted home town of Kirkcudbright and found an endless source of subject matter in the 53 years he lived in the town. Kirkcudbright drew some of Scotland's greatest artists, such as Cadell and Fergusson, and many painters gathered here following the lead of E.A. Hornel. They were primarily attracted to the effect of the light on the hilly ground which produced soft colours and a spectrum of grey. Oppenheimer was a keen fisherman and many of his paintings dealt with the effect of light on water. His views of The Solway Coast and Whitby were used by British Rail for their advertising campaign 'See Britain By Rail'. He retained a love of Italy and produced some excellent canvasses of Venice and Florence. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, where he became a full member in 1934.

The Manning Galleries Ltd, LondonEdgar Seaton Hyde, Cheshire (acquired from the above in the 1960s)Thence by descent In the present work Apollo rides through the sky silhouetted against the sun opposite his twin sister Artemis, her head profiled against the moon and in the company of a group of chaste nymphs. Sagittarius in the form of a centaur is to Apollo's right. The subject derives from the top section of the etching by Pietro Testa (1611-1650), of the Allegory of Autumn. Not shown in the present work, but present in the lower part of Testa's etching, a drunken Silenus with the god Pan leads a lustful parade of satyrs and centaurs to honour the return of Bacchus from his travels through India. The sheet is taped along the top edge. There is some slight fading to the sheet consistent with age. There is an old repaired tear to the upper left hand corner. There are some small spots of light foxing. Both the repaired loss and foxing are visible in the calalogue illustration. There is a small piece of tape to each lower corner consistent with the sheet being previously stuck down along the lower edge. There is some slight buckling to the right and left edges of the sheet. The work would benefit from remounting in a conservation mount. Otherwise, the sheet is in good overall condition for a work of its age.

Members were auditioned though a sliding panel in the thick wooden door before being granted admission. Paul McCartney: "The Moody Blues used to hand out there so much that there was a corner called 'The Moody Blues corner'. It was a cool little place to go. The Scotch was pretty good." A membership card from The Bag o' Nails. In Barry Miles' biography of Paul McCartney, Paul comments, 'The Bag o’Nails, the big one. That was my favourite in the end. That was where I met Linda. Bag o’Nails, down the bag. It was supposed to have been a hookers’ hangout before. It probably was then, too. The thing about the Bag o’Nails was that they had live music. Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames were down there, Alan Price played down there a lot and Jimi Hendrix eventually. I became quite a regular.' A membership card for the Speakeasy club.
