MARCELLE FERRON (Quebec, 1924 - Monreal, 2001)."Composition".Mixed media on paper.Signed in lower right corner.Size: 47 x 51,5 cm.Marcelle Ferron was born in Louiseville, Quebec, in 1924 and died in Montreal in 2001. One of the most important Quebec artists of the 20th century, she was known as a painter, sculptor and stained glass artist.Marcelle Ferron enrolled at the École des beaux-arts de Québec (1942-1944) but dropped out before completing her studies. In 1946, she met Paul-Émile Borduas and enrolled at the École du Meuble in Montreal, where he taught. She was one of the last artists to officially join the group known as Les Automatistes. She was also one of the youngest signatories of the group's global manifesto Refus in 1948. She held her first solo exhibition in 1949 at Librairie Tranquille in Montreal. That year, she began to gain considerable recognition in the art world.Around 1953, Marcelle Ferron moved to France. There she rented a house in Clamart, a suburb of Paris, and set up her studio. Europeans appreciated her abstract works, full of light and life. During his stay, he took classes in Paris with Michel Blum (1964), a glass artist. He participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions in galleries and took part in the art shows at the Salons d'Art Contemporains held at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris. During this time, he also exhibited his work in Canada, the United States and much of Europe, specifically Germany, England, Italy and Holland. She received a grant from the Canadian Council of Arts in 1957, an award from the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 1960 and in 1961, she represented Quebec at the Sao Paulo Biennial in Brazil and won a Silver Medal, the first time a woman from Quebec had won this award. She was an internationally recognised artist who returned to Quebec in 1966. She devoted herself to working with glass for the next seven years. She created her first masterpiece in this medium, the windows of the Champs-de-Mars metro station in Montreal. In 1967, he began teaching at Université Laval in Quebec City. She taught Architecture from 1967 to 1970 and then Visual Arts from 1970 to 1979. During those years, she was elected Member of the Royal Canadian Academy. In 1973, she returned to painting full-time and exhibited her work in galleries and museums in Montreal, Quebec, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Paris and Mexico, both in solo and group exhibitions. The first retrospective exhibition of his work was held in 1976 at the Musée d'Art de Joliette in Quebec. The following year, she was awarded the Louis-Philippe Hébert Prize. In 1983, she was the first woman to receive the Prix Paul-Émile-Borduas, the highest honour conferred on visual artists by the Quebec government. Two years later, she was named Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Québec. In 2000, she was named Grand Officier de l'Ordre National du Québec and a retrospective exhibition was held at the Musée d'art Contemporain de Montréal. She died a year later in Montreal at the age of 77.
TADAO ANDO (Osaka, 1941).Untitled.Graphic work and coloured drawing on paper.Hand signed.Size: 15,5 x 13,5 cm.Tadao Ando is a self-taught architect greatly influenced by the work of Le Corbusier, trained mainly during his travels in the USA, Europe and Africa between 1962 and 1969. During his travels he visited buildings by Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Kahn, which clearly influenced the forms and materials of his buildings. In 1968 he returned home and founded Tadao Ando Architects & Associates in Osaka. His achievements as an architect include winning the 1995 Pritzker Architecture Prize from the Hyatt Foundation. His early works show an incipient postmodern style, although clearly adapted to Japanese customs. In 1976 he completed his first work, Azuma House, where Tadao Ando divided the house into two volumes, one private and the other shared, with a courtyard between them for the "play of wind and light". The presence of natural elements in his works would accompany him throughout his career. During the eighties, Tadao Ando leapt onto the international scene as the leading exponent of the new Japanese architecture. From these years we highlight the Rokko Housing development (1983-1993) with his Chapel on Mount Rokko (1986), in these buildings the influence of Le Corbusier on Tadao Ando is evident in the use of concrete as the main material, although the individualised treatment of light gives his works a personal stamp. In 1992 he designed the Japanese Pavilion for Expo'92 in Seville. A large ephemeral wooden structure. The Museum of the Forest of Tombs (1992) is a space full of symbolism in which Tadao Ando abandons straight lines, but not the coldness of concrete. Among Ando's notable works at the turn of the century are the Awaji Yumebutai in Hyogo (1997) and the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas (2000). Among his latest works, particularly noteworthy are ambitious projects such as the Poly Theatre in Shanghai, a building consisting of a reinforced concrete box, enveloped by a glazed lattice skin, and perforated by steel tunnels lined with aluminium panels, which have a wood-like finish. A building that preserves the essence of Tadao Ando's work, but developed using more modern techniques.
