IATTRIBUTED TO P.D. HONDT, FLEMISH OILS ON CANVAS, 18TH C., PAIR, H 91", W 67", "RACHEL AT THE WELL" & "JOSEPH SOLD INTO SLAVERY" "Rachel at the Well" signed "P.D. Hondt" in the near lower right (see photo detail).  Both paintings are attributed to Phillipe de Hondt (Flemish, 1683-1741).  Large format. In gilt wood frames.  From the Estate of Daniel Clancy, Voltaire Place, Grosse Pointe Farms; sold by Christie's New York, Friday, January 31, 1997, lot #54 (see Christie's labels lot 54, 8584 2 KB172 listing them as a pair (see photo details), both were listed as attributed to P.D. Hondt by Christie's in the before mentioned sale.  Very good quality.  As viewed under UV light in the unopened frame:  both are lined; both had their canvases previously folded [probably to make them fit into smaller fames]; both in 20th c. frames; one having c. 8% overpainting in the bottom third and UL and overall fine craquelure with instability; the 'white' along the edges fluoresces; one having a white spot in the sky in the UR; other one has c. 10% overpainting in the bottom quarter of the painting with the overpainting in the cracks having turned white, has unstable craquelure, paint is slightly skinned, 2 white spots on the right and has a patch in the LL.  The signature in "Rachel at the Well" does not fluoresce under UV light.  For High Resolution Photos visit Dumouchelles website.

ATTRIBUTED TO ROBERT S. DUNCANSON (AMERICAN, 1821-1872), OIL ON CANVAS, H 33", W 60", PARADISE & PERI THEMEC. 1871; unsigned; gilt frame. Purchased c. 2002-2003 from a private individual in the Indianapolis, IN area. Thought to be possibly the missing painting that was mentioned in Joseph Ketner's book, "The Emergence of the African-American Artist, Robert S. Duncanson 1821-1872" (pp. 174-175) which was inspired by Thomas Moore's, "Paradise and the Peri" from the Orientalist poem, "Lalia Rookh". The missing Duncanson, "Paradise and the Peri" was: exhibited at Wiswell's Gallery, Cincinnati, Ohio , Aug. 1871; exhibited in Monroe, MI, Sept. 1871; exhibited in Detroit, MI, Sept. 1871 and reviewed by the Detroit Free Press, Sept. 16, 1871, page 1; acquired locally by C.L. Andrews at the Detroit exhibition; loaned to the Detroit City Hall and was hung in the sheriff's office where it was vandalized by an irate citizen in 1876; donated by Andrews to the Detroit Institute of Arts, 1903-1904; the DIA sent it to G.H. Weigert to be auctioned where it was sold Nov. 29, 1918 (see Francis Waring Robinson papers, Detroit Institute of Art, Roll 511); locations after that are unknown. Stamped on verso of stretcher, "W.G. Bickford, Dealer of Artist's Colors and Materials, 189 W. Fourth St., Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Bickford was listed as a "Dealer of Artist's Materials" only in 1869 and 1870. The listing changed to Artist' Emporium in 1871 with the same address. Bickford lived at 185 1/2 W. Fourth St. in 1870. Duncanson lived at 187 W. Fourth St. in 1872. Bickford's business was at 189 W. Fourth St, 1869-1875. Marked on the verso of the original canvas (before being lined): "G.W. Stubbs", "A.W. Pugh" (see photo detail). G.W. Stubbs was the brother-in-law of A.W. Pugh of the Pugh family of Cincinnati. Duncanson worked with Achilles Pugh in his print shop in Cincinnati in the 1850's to early 1860's. Duncanson was a friend of the Pugh family in Cincinnati. Both G.W. Stubbs and A.W. Pugh were in Cincinnati in 1871. A NORTH INDIAN CARVED JADE KHANJAR (DAGGER) GRIP, 18th century, carved in relief with four six-petal flowerheads and leafage, the body of light celadon colour with "snowflake" inclusions, later fitted with a Japanese shibayama inlaid ivory page turner blade, circa 1890, 48cm long overall. The handle only 13cm long. Condition report: The handle is good with no chips or cracks noted except for natural faults. The ivory blade with significant losses of inlay, particularly on side (a phoenix bird) and crudely glued into handle socket - this is currently slightly wobbly - and the glue does not appear to be a super glue

A CHINESE GOLD LACQUER AND MOTHER OF PEARL INLAID SMALL COSMETIC BOX in the manner of Jiang Qianli, late Ming/early Qing Dynasty, with cinquefoil flowerhead, each petal with a different densely patterned ground, 4.5cm dia. x 1.5cm high. Jiang Qianli was a late Ming Master in inlaid lacquerware. A rather similar Qianli (marked) hexafoil box was included in the Exhibition at the Hong Kong Oriental Ceramic Society, Arts from the Scholars Studio, Hong Kong, 1986, catalogue p.169, no. 144. Condition report: Numerous small inlaid sections missing, particularly from all the four rims of the piece. Typical light wear throughout and other small losses. Structurally sound.

A RARE VINTAGE ROYAL BALLET BODICE This beautifully tailored bodice was bought from a sale at the Royal Ballet, London convent Garden. The balloon sleeves are made from cream satin and pale green crepe de chine. This costume is so light it floats and with the weight of the fine gold embroidery embellished with pearls and sequins on the wings, one can imagine it was worn by a magical dancer. Bust 26".
