[The City Chambers, Glasgow], only edition, 30 albumen prints mounted on thick card with printed captions and credits to photographers and the architect William Young, spotting in the prints, some soiling to mounts, one plate loose, bookplate of J.Guthrie Smith, ink presentation inscription from ?the architect to front free endpaper, handsome original dark blue morocco with elaborate border in gilt and blind, upper cover with title and city arms in gilt, g.e., a little rubbed, folio, Glasgow, [c.1889].*** In 1881 William Young, a locally born architect, won the competition to design a city hall befitting Glasgow’s importance as a centre of industry and commerce and its status as the second city of the British Empire. Young produced a beaux-arts masterpiece considered one of the great civic buildings of the nineteenth century. The photographers capture the building in all its late-Victorian magnificence. The work was likely prepared and completed in advance of Queen Victoria opening the building on 22 August 1889 and possibly as a gift for members of the City Council or other prominent citizens.John Guthrie Smith (1834-94), antiquarian and Dean of Guild in Glasgow 1891-1893. Together with D. O. Mitchell, Guthrie Smith provided the text for Thomas Annan’s Old Country Houses.

Delivered without notes, a transcript from recordings was first printed in the February 1960 issue of the California Institute of Technology Journal of Engineering and Science. Here, the first readily attainable printed version, presents slightly enlarged argument.

They are the second and third volumes in a series of Greek texts printed by the Typographus Regius Robert Estienne from manuscripts belonging to the Royal Library in Fontainbleau, which began with Eusebius' Ecclesiastica historia, published earlier in 1544. The Eusebius series represents the first appearance of the first font known as grecs du roi, the types commissioned by King François I and cut by Claude Garamond. "The cursive Greek types, still acknowledged as some of the finest ever cut, were based on the script of the calligrapher Angelo Vergezio, who was then engaged in transcribing and cataloguing Greek manuscripts for the royal library." (Mortimer, French, I, pp. 266-267). (6) *** A signed photograph of two of the leading comic performers of their day. Lauder and Chaplin only appeared together in a 1918 short film, signed photographs of the two stars together are exceptionally rare, we have been able to trace no other examples at auction and this may be the only example.  The letters and legal document (dated 1928) relate to a settlement between Lauder and a Mabel Jarman (the original owner of the present lot) in which Jarman agreed to hand over a number of letters for the significant sum of £780.

Two postcard albums with a collection of First World War Egypt and Palestine cards and photographs, including a scarce panoramic view of the Bay of Sollum to the far west of Egypt's Western Desert, taken by Sergeant Finlay, 2nd Company Imperial Camel Corps, on the day after the British retook Sollum from the Senussi tribesmen on 16 February 1916. The lengthy caption on the back, written by Sergeant Finlay, also records the rescue a month later, by an armoured car patrol under the Duke of Westminster, of the crew of HMS Tara who had been captured by the Senussi.The small photographs include the 1/2nd Welsh Field Ambulance Hospital at Wardan Camp; Helouan Camp; Wadi Natrun in the Western Desert; probably the 1st Australian Light Horse Regiment; tanks; and Turkish prisoners. The postcards include messages from soldiers, and postal history interest with censor and other military cachets.Approx 38 photographs, see images
