GVI NAVAL SWORD named to R.A.S. Platt. R.N. - Submarine Officer Lieutenant Ralph Anthony Saville Platt was in born in Farnham Surrey in 1919. Platt joined the Royal Navy as a Cadet on 1st January 1937. He first served on HMS Frobisher, which was a Cadet Training Cruiser. Progressing steadily through the ranks, upon his discharge he was serving as a Lieutenant. During the Second World War, Platt served on a variety of ships. Most interestingly HMS Seawolf (Submarine) from February 1943 till April 1944. Seawolf earlier in the war had involvement with the Bismarck and Tirpitz. Previously Platt had served on HMS Upright, (Submarine) which was involved in sinking a number of Italian ships. During the Siege of Malta, he was based at HMS St Angelo, a Submarine depot. Platt was discharged as medically unfit on the 12th of May 1946. In the post-war years, he emigrated to Australia, passing away there in 2004. Some light wear to scabbard and blade. Named R.A.S. EXCEEDINGLY RARE DURHAM PALS ESCAPERS MILITARY MEDAL GROUP to 18/315 SJT E R Little 18th DLI: MM - 18-315 SJT E R Little 18/ Durh LI; 1914/15 Star - 18-315 Pte E R Little Durh LI; Pair - 18-315 Pte E R Little Durh LI, Correctly impressed, swing mounted as worn. Condition - GVF Edward Rutherford Little was born in 1887 in Lupton, Westmoreland just outside of Kendal. At the time of the 1911 census, Little was working as an Elementary School Teacher in Ebchester, Durham. An original member of the 18th battalion Durham Light Infantry, he was given service number 18/315. He landed in Egypt with the 18th on 22nd December 1915. Little is pictured on page 75 of John Sheen's book on the Pals, where it is noted that he became a prisoner of war in 1918. He was awarded the Military Medal, gazetted on 30th January 1920 which states; 'His Majesty the KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the undermentioned rewards in recognition of gallant conduct and determination displayed in escaping or attempting to escape from captivity, which services have been brought to notice in accordance with the terms of Army Order 193 of 1919'. In his excellent book ' The Great War Medal Collectors Companion' the author Howard Williams States; ' As far as I can ascertain, only successful escapes were rewarded'. In 1928 he became Headmaster of Medomsley C.E School in County Durham and passed away in 1950.

L.I 1939/45 Star Defence Medal War Medal GVR LSGC correctly impressed 4435229 W O Cl 1C H Makeham Durh L I Condition Fine to VF+ (Trio polished, LSGC with official correction) Cyril Herbert Makeham was born in Bedfordshire on 15th May 1887. A member of the 2nd Bn Durham Light Infantry he landed in France & Flanders on 8th September 1914. He was taken prisoner on 9th April 1918 and held until the end of the war. Awarded the LSGC in 1927 and M.B.E, 21.5.1932 By 1939 he was retired and living from a Warrant Officers pension. During the Second World War, he was commissioned as a Captain & Quartermaster in the Northumberland Fusiliers.

Condition VF+ William Alfred Bone was born in St Margret's, Durham. On the 4th September 1914, he attested for the Durham Light Infantry, stating he already had 21 years' service with volunteers. He was awarded Field Punishment No2 twice in 1915 for 'Drunkenness'. He landed in France with the 4th Bn on 28th August 1915, serving there until 21st May 1917. He was sent back to France 28th July 1917 and transferred to the Labour Corps on 15th November 1918. Bone was discharged on 1st February 1919.
A GREAT WAR CASUALTY PAIR TO CAPTAIN J TAIT DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY Correctly impressed Capt J Tait Condition EF James Tait was born on 3rd September 1881 in Coxhoe, Durham. The son of William and Elizabeth Sewell, his father was a Civil Engineer. The Wellingburian WW1 roll of honour states the following; Jim came to us in September 1893 to December 1896, and while here took a prominent part in School life, both in work and games. He passed the Junior Cambridge Examinations in 1894, gained Second Class honours in 1895 with distinction in Scripture a first Class Honours in 1896, with distinction in Mathematics. He gained his under 14 football and cricket colours and his 2nd XI colours for both games in 1896. He won the 300 yards handicap in 1895 when quite a small boy and was in the winning football scratch six in 1896. He joined up as a private in the Durham Light Infantry at the beginning of the war and had worked his way up to the rank of Captain, which he held in the 2/1 London Regiment, and it was while leading his men in an attack on the enemy that he fell at their head. His last words were 'Carry on.' Please see lot 149 for his Brothers Trio and Plaque
A SECOND WORLD WAR MILITARY MEDAL to Corporal S Hart DLI. A Stretcher Bearer who during the Battle for the Mareth Line saved countless lives. GVI Military Medal correctly impressed 4461325 A Cpl S Hart Durh L I Condition EF. Septimus Hart was born on 27th October 1915 in South Shields. In civilian life, he worked as a 'Builders Labourer in Heavy Industry'. A member of the 8th Bn Durham Light Infantry. He won the Military Medal while serving as a Stretcher Bearer during the attack on the Mareth Line in Tunisia in 1943. The original citation being; ' In the attack on the Mareth Line on 20th March 1943, Cpl Hart was a stretcher-bearer Corporal with 'A' Company advancing through a wadi to attack an enemy position. Extremely heavy enemy artillery, mortar and MG fire was brought to bear on the Company. Heavy casualties occurred, amongst which the reserve platoon of the company was almost entirely disabled. Cpl Hart organised and led the work of his stretcher bears with such efficiency that although several of his men had been put out of action, he was mainly responsible for maintaining clearance of casualties for the Company, and also the two other companies who were simultaneously passing through the wadi, and whose stretcher bears had become casualties. His conduct throughout was directly responsible for saving a very large number of our own troops who, having become casualties, were in great danger of being killed by artillery fire'. The awarded was announced in the London Gazette on 15th June 1943. Septimus survived the war and passed away in South Shields in 1999
AN EDWARD 7TH LSGC TO SERGEANT DEAN DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY EVII LSGC correctly impressed 3016 C SJT E A Dean Durh L I Condition GVF Edward Albert Dean was born in St John's, London in 1870. He attested at Newcastle upon Tyne on 6th January 1888. He was awarded the LSGC and discharged in 1909 at the end of his second period of engagement having risen to the rank of Colour Sergeant.
A VERY RARE AFRICA GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL, NIGERIA 1918, TO SJT A WILLEY 21ST DLI Likely Regimentally Unique. AGSM - Correctly impressed 21-328 SJT A Willey DLI Condition EF Alexander Willey served with the 21st Bn Durham Light Infantry during the Great War. He was attached to the 2nd bn Nigeria Regiment and qualified for the Africa General Service Medal with bar Nigeria 1918. The bar was awarded service against the Egba Tribe in the vicinity of the Nigerian Government Railway. The roll confirms the award and shows that Riley was reabsorbed into the DLI.

He was awarded the MBE for Gallant and distinguished service for operations in Burma and on the Eastern Indian Frontier of India between the 16th May 44 to 15th August 44 The award of the MBE was announced in the London Gazette on the 28th June 1945. A SCARCE AFRICA GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL 'KENYA' GROUP TO MAJOR WILKINSON DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY. 1939 to 45 Star Africa Star Italy Star Defence Medal War Medal AGSM Kenya correctly impressed T G Wilkinson DLI Condition GVF Swing mounted as worn Thomas Geoffrey Wilkinson was born on 29th October 1915. He was commissioned into the Durham Light Infantry on 1937. During the Second World War he was posted to the 10th Bn and served in the BEF, service in Iceland followed. While serving as a Major in the Africa campaign, he was dangerously wounded by a Grenade on 12th May 1942. He was able to resume his duties as Second in Command of the 10th Bn in August 1942. Wilkinson then went on to serve with the 14th Bn in Italy. In the post-war years, he was attached to the Kings African Rifles from 2nd January 1952 until 18th December 1955. Serving with the KAR in Kenya. He retired in late 1955 and remained in the Army Reserve until 1965.

Swing mounted as worn. Condition NEF Tom Cooper served in India with the 1st Bn from 21st August 1915. In the immediate post-war years, he served in Afghanistan in 1919.
OUTSTANDING SECOND WORLD WAR BURMA MILITARY MEDAL GROUP TO SERGEANT J MURRAY 2ND DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY who was originally recommended for the DCM. Military Medal correctly impressed - 4463241 SJT J Murray Durh L I; 1939/45 Star; Burma Star; Defence Medal; War Medal. Condition GVF+ James Murray was born on 9th May 1913 and a Native of Stanley in County Durham. After leaving school, he went to work at East Tanfield Colliery as a miner, working underground with the railways' section. He then moved to a pit in Sussex, working there for four years before he signed up, joining the Durham light Infantry. A member of the 2nd battalion he was wounded on 23rd April 1944 while serving as a Lance Sergeant. Murray was awarded the Military Medal for the following deed; he had originally been recommended for the Distinguished Conduct Medal; 'At Malegyin on 12th March 1945 Sgt Murray J. 2nd Bn The Durham Light Infantry was commanding 11 Pl 'C' Coy. The Coy was ordered to capture the village of Malegyin and the high ground overlooking it. 11 PI was leading the PI in the attack, which started at 1000hrs. Soon after they crossed the start line, they came under heavy LMG fire. Sgt Murray ordered covering fire, and himself led the other two sections to liquate the enemy. During the latter stages of the attack, he led his Pi through accurate shell fire to attack a party of 30 Japanese who were trying to make their escape the burning village. By skilful leadership, he manoeuvred the enemy into an unfavourable position and put in a quick attack which killed 10 of the enemy besides wounding many others. The PI captured its objective and large quantities of equipment and ammunition. Throughout the engagement, he repeatedly exposed himself to the enemy fire in order to move his section into the most favourable position. The success of the PI action was due to Sgt. Murrays determination and outstanding leadership.' The MM was announced in the London Gazette on 2nd August 1945. Murray survived the war and returned to work in East Tanfield Colliery. The group comes with a number of original pieces of ephemera, such as newspaper clippings of the award; discharge certificates etc.

GROUP OF FIVE TO LIEUTENANT COLONEL C B J RICCARD ROYAL DUBLIN FUSILIERS Cecil Bampfylde James Riccard was born in South Molton, Devon on 29th February 1872. He was commissioned on the 9th of September 1883 into the 4th Royal Irish Fusiliers, before being promoted to Lieutenant and transferred to the Royal Dublin Fusiliers on 8th September 1893. Promoted to Captain on 1st April 1889, Riccard served in the Boer War with the 1st Battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. For his service in the campaign, he was awarded the Queens South Africa Medal with bars Tugela Heights, Orange Free State, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal and Laing's Nek. Also the Kings South Africa Medal with bars South Africa 1901 and 1902. During the Great War, he was part of a replacement draft sent to Gallipoli in May 1915. He commanded the 1st battalion between 15th May 1915 and 25th July 1915. In January 1917 he suffered a gunshot wound to the face and was hospitalised for an extended period, he survived the war. In the post-war years, he lived in the Bath & County Club. Riccard passed away in 1939. Swing Mounted as worn. INDIAN GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL TO SGT G W CASSELLS 1ST EAST SURREY REGT late DLI who was killed in action at Monte Cassino. IGS NWF 1930/31 Correctly impressed 4444499 Pte G W Cassells Durh L I Condition GVF+ George Wilfred Cassells was born in Cork, Ireland on 1st May 1908. He served on the Northwest Frontier with the 2nd Bn Durham Light Infantry in 1930 and 1931 and was awarded the IGS. He was transferred to the East Surrey Regiment on 2nd June 1938. George was sadly killed in action at the Battle of Monte Cassino on 19th March 1944. He was laid to rest in Cassino War Cemetery. At the time he was Sergeant with the 1st Bn East Surrey Regt.
SOUTH EAST ASIA 1945-46 TO PTE J TAYLOR SEAFORTHS Correctly impressed - S E Asia 1945-46 - 1470048 Pte J Taylor Seaforth Condition VF Taylor enlisted in 1938 joining the Royal Artillery in the Light Anti-Aircraft section. He was transferred to the Seaforths and saw service in Southeast Asia in the immediate post-war years. Serving in Batavia from 12th August 1945 until 30th December 1945.

A single stone diamond ring, stamped '14k', estimated weight of diamond approximately 0.50 carat. The ring is in good sound condition, with light scuffs and scratches to the setting appropriate to its age, and some wear where it has rubbed against another ring. The diamond is secure, and a bright lively stone, its impact maximised by the setting: estimated colour perhaps J, estimated clarity P1 - there is a quantity of small white and grey inclusions under the table facet, which can be seen with the naked eye, though it's doubtful that a layman would notice - or even be able to see them without magnification.
