Omega - An Air Ministry gentleman's steel wristwatch, circa 1940, the signed circular off white coloured dial, 30mm diameter, with black Arabic numerals, blued hands, centre seconds and chemin de fer chapter ring, the crown wind 16 jewel mechanical movement calibre 30SCT2 number 9538240, case number 10325286, engraved to the reverse 'A/M 6B/159 4539/42, with fixed lugs to an aftermarket brown leather strap with pin buckle Provenance: Property of the late acting Squadron Leader V.C. Royals (134188) who served in Egypt, Malta, the Middle East, North Africa and Sicily Included with the lot is a copy of part of a letter written by V.C. Royals to his mother in April 1943, during his time stationed at RAF Hal-Far, Malta, as a pilot officer. In it he writes, "I have now flown a new type of aircraft - a Hurricane. I like them very much indeed and I like my job here very much, far better than the other one in the Middle East." Sqd Ldr Royals flew many different aircraft during his wartime career, including both the Spitfire and Hurricane as well as light to medium bombers, including the Beaufort and Beaufighter. He resigned his commission in 1953. Other Notes: During the Second World War, the Air Ministry ordered watches from several different manufacturers. This is an example of one of the watches ordered from Omega for use by pilots/navigators in the RAF. The military coding to the case back, '6B/159', specifically relates to this use and the 'AM' initials are an abbreviation of 'Air Ministry'.

Los 232

A Victorian cameo brooch depicting Helios chasing the dawn, the shell cameo finely and deeply carved and representing the Greek sun god in his quadriga, drawn by galloping white horses and ascending the vault of heaven to bring light to the world, preceded by a flying putto bearing Aurora's torch and accompanied by dancing maidens, all on billowing clouds; the large oval cameo in a collet held by open scrolling quadrants with finer detailed scrolls at the compass points, yellow metal tests for gold, length 7.3cm

Los 291

A colour change blue paste ring, the large round facetted stone, 14mm diameter, four claw set between baguette cut white stone shoulders to a raised gallery and plain shank, size P; in artificial light the stone is a clear aquamarine green-blue, which changes in daylight to a light lavender blue; it has strong fluorescence under UV light (purple in SW, orange in LW) and a pronounced spectrum indicating the presence of various rare earths, cased

Los 307

A ruby, emerald and diamond lover's ring, the offset millegrain edged pearshaped emerald and ruby surrounded by pavé set rose cut diamonds and topped with a rose cut diamond set bow, to a tapering shank, size P½, unhallmarked but stamped '18ct' Other Notes: The design of two hearts with a bow motif, which symbolises intertwined love, was very popular with young couples in the late Victorian period.  This ring is charming, but shows considerable wear and tear around the setting of the stones, and possible repairs. The diamonds are not high quality or very well matched, and some have chips - but there are none missing - the two gaps at the top are the loops of the bow surmount. The ruby has inclusions appropriate to a natural origin, fluoresces bright carmine (as it should) under UV light, and is a lovely colour. The emerald is - for an emerald - remarkably clean, though has some inclusions, and there is no obvious evidence to show anything but a natural origin; the cut is quite geometric and the stone is slightly small for the setting, so it is possible that this is a replacement stone. The shank has been discretely enlarged, but is in good sound condition.

Los 314

A pair of 9ct gold double-ended cufflinks cased by Asprey, each with plain oval flat plaques and chain connections, the 'front' plaques engraved with the crest of the Sultanate of Oman, London hallmarks for 9ct gold,1982, weight 9.2g, in a red leather and velvet lined case embossed with matching crest Provenance: Presented as a gift following a state visit by the Sultan of Oman. All parts are present and correct, the plaques solid, the chain supple.  There is a little light tarnishing, and some fine scratches, but it would appear that the cufflinks have barely been worn.  The box too is in excellent condition.

Los 324

A mid 20th century blue zircon and light blue spinel pendant necklace and bracelet suite, the necklace with two pairs of leaves holding a round cut light greenish-blue spinel between, and suspending a short length of chain and further pair of leaves and an oval cut blue zircon, to a belcher link back chain; the bracelet en suite with a line of three graduated oval cut spinels separated by four leaves apiece and pairs of leaves at the ends, the back section of long narrow twin line links, box clasp with safety clasp; length of necklace as worn 43cm, central pendant feature 4.5cm, and bracelet 16.5cm, cased

Los 332

An early Victorian double-sided pendant with a portrait miniature front and hairwork back, the oval pendant with cast foliate gilt frame holding a half-length portrait of a young girl with blue eyes and carefully arranged light brown hair in long ringlets, wearing a pearl necklace, a light blue décolleté dress and gauzy fichu around her bare shoulders; the reverse also glazed and containing curled and gold wire bound locks of light brown hair, presumably that of the sitter; the pendant with an associated suspensory loop with carved leaf decoration, tests for 15ct gold; length with suspensory loop 6.9cm, length of portrait 4.6cm

Los 351

An emerald and diamond 3 stone ring, the square emerald cut emerald between two kite shaped diamonds, all collet set, the stone bezels pavé set with rose cut diamonds, to a plain shank, size M, unhallmarked but stamped '18ct plat' two rose cut diamonds missingAlteration to the catalogue entry:The three principal stones - the emerald cut emerald and the two trilliant cut diamonds - are all claw set; they rest on a design feature of the gallery - a continuous millegrain edged band set with a line of rose cut diamond points (two lacking). The emerald is a bright, clear peacock green, and is (for an emerald) remarkably clean: the principal inclusions are a large but wispy veil that goes across the middle of the stone, and an internal fracture that catches the light at certain angles; there are minor nibbles and abrasions on some crown facet edges. The emerald measures 6.41 x 6.15 x 3.02mmThe trilliant cut diamonds make an excellent foil, and are lively stones; assessed (with difficulty due to the setting) as approximately I/J colour, and VS clarity. They measure approximately 5.4mm along the sides abutting the emerald, and 2.8mm from the centre of that line to the outer point. The line of little rose cut diamonds is there for the design accent not for the quality of the diamonds. The claws are all secure, the setting without undue wear, though the shank appears to have been resized - there is a blob of gold solder on the inside, and it is possible that the length with the stamp on is not original; and there are two more solder lines closer to the front, at least one of which has 14ct solder; however the shank tests for 18ct gold. The ring size is M - or in the US 6½, in Europe 53

Los 403

A pair of French 18ct gold and sapphire double ended cufflinks, each end with a near-round cabochon light blue sapphire joined by single elongated safety pin styled link, French eagle's head mark, gross weight 12.5g, presented in a period case

Los 415

A sapphire and diamond ribbon bow brooch, the central oval cut light blue sapphire beneath an old European cut diamond surmount and with scrolling loops and ribbon ends set all along with old cushion and variously old round cut diamonds in unmarked white metal; total estimated weight of diamonds approximately 1.20cts, width 3.5cm, cased

Los 425

An oval diamond and enamel Kundan-Meena ring, the rub over set oval facetted and foil backed diamond measuring approximately 16 x 13mm within a bezel of dark blue enamel decoration, the closed back lavishly enamelled with white, red, blue and green foliate and symmetrical designs, the shoulders decorated with green and red enamelled flowers, to a plain shank, unhallmarked yellow metal tested using X ray fluorescence spectroscopy as an alloy of 98% pure gold, 0.8% copper and 1.2% silver, size J-L, Provenance: The property of an Indian family for three generations Other Notes: In the traditional Rajasthani Kundan style of jewellery, flat, facetted or uncut stones are set in high carat gold jewellery using foil backings often made of gold leaf. Meenakari, or enamelling, is the art of decorating jewellery using bright coloured enamel in intricate designs. Over the centuries the two skills became combined, and the result is Kundan-Meena jewellery. In the 17th century, the Mogul emperor Shah Jahan invited Persian enamelling specialists to train his own master-craftsmen. His artisans combined the techniques of this Persian art with Indian styles and colours. The resulting pieces of jewellery had brilliant coloured enamel on one side and magnificent hand-cut diamonds, rubies, emeralds or sapphires on the other side. This new style of jewellery flourished during the Mogul era and was hugely popular with Rajasthan royalty. Its popularity remains to this day and fine examples of Kundan-Meena jewels are in great demand by connoisseurs and collectors worldwide. The technique of Meenakari requires a high level of skill. Delicate and intricate designs of flowers, birds, animals or motifs are etched or engraved onto the piece. This creates walls and grooves which are filled with coloured enamel dust. The pieces are placed in a furnace and the intense heat melts the dust with the molten liquid filling the grooves. The walls prevent the spread of the enamel, maintaining the pattern or design. This process is repeated with each individual colour due to their different melting temperatures. Colours with the highest melting temperatures are applied first as they will be re-fired with each additional colour. Timing is critical, and the risk of damage to the previously fired colours increases with every new colour added. The rejection rate for damaged items is very high - up to 30%. After the last colour has been fired, the object is cooled and polished with agate. The depth of the grooves determines the play of light, and the number of different colours on a piece is an indication of the level of skill of the craftsman and the quality of the item. This ring is decorated with blue, green, white and red enamel. Red takes the least amount of firing and is the most difficult of all the colours to apply. Items with red enamel have the highest rejection rate of all. Both Kundan setting and Meenakari are very labour-intensive tasks which require the skills of highly trained, specialist craftsmen. This ring is a fabulous example of this ancient art and may well have taken up to three months to produce - from the design (chitrakari) and drawings through to the finished piece - truly a jewel fit for a Mogul emperor.
