Bible [English]. The Bible, that is, the Holy Scriptures conteined in the Olde and Newe Testament, Translated according to the Ebrew and Greeke, and conferred with the best Translations in divers Languages..., Imprinted at London [i.e. Amsterdam]: by the Deputies of Christopher Barker, 1599 [i.e. circa 1599-1640], general title present with woodcut border [dated 1599), letterpress general title with woodcut illustration, New Testament title within decorative woodcut border, few woodcut illustrations and decorative initials, double-column roman type, bound without Apocrypha (as often), blank before New Testament title with early annotations, colophon dated 1599, initial four leaves near detached and with some tears and fraying to edges, general light toning, finger soiling and occasional dampstaining (mostly to margins), one or two short closed tears, bound with at rear The Booke of Psalmes: Collected into English Meeter, by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins, and others..., n.p., n.d., circa 1610, light toning, dust-soiling and few marks, slight wear to fore-edge margin of last few leaves, later pastedowns (without free endpapers), contemporary sheep, lacking spine and torn with some loss to boards, brass central boss to each board and corner pieces (lower outer corner piece lacking to lower board), without clasps, worn, 4to, together with The Coverdale Bible, 1535, with an Introduction by the Revd. Professor S.L. Greenslade, facsimile edition, London: Dawson, 1975, original publisher's brown morocco, folio (Qty: 2)Herbert 249; Darlow & Moule 189, and STC 2175. Geneva version; with Thomson's NT, but with Junius' Revelation. With Esther i:1 '...seven and twen- / ty provinces'. Headline Ee3b, ' Proverbers'. Many of the previous errors are corrected. The section containing the Apocrypha, though included in the list of books, was apparently omitted from all except a few copies. These Bibles were printed probably in Amsterdam and Dort and adopted by Barker, for the use of English Puritans in the Low Countries. There are many editions bearing this date, which while agreeing closely are yet distinct. No doubt a certain number of copies were originally issued in a mixed state. The nominal date, 1599, is probably untrue in almost every case.

Manuscript Poem. 'Farewell! farewell! We part for ever!', early 19th century, manuscript poem of 19 quatrains, written neatly in brown ink on wove paper, slightly cramped at end, old light stain to lower panel, two pages, folio (32 x 20cm), loosely inserted in Flower (Desmond & Munby, A.N.L.) , English Poetical Autographs. A Collection of Facsimiles of Autograph Poems from Sir Thomas Wyat to Rupert Brooke, first edition, 1938, some spotting, top edge gilt, original buckram, rubbed and spine darkened, small folio (one of 1,500 copies) (Qty: 2)The poem was printed in The Lady's Magazine, or Entertaining Companion for the Fair Sex, volume 38, (December), 1807, pp. 671-72. In the printed version it is identified as the work of the anonymous Bion and dated June 1807. The untitled work has instead a quote from George Colman's The Poor Gentleman: A Comedy in Five Acts. Whether this is in the hand of the unknown Bion or simply a copy is unknown. The author, perhaps realising that they were running out of space, omits the penultimate quatrain as printed in the journal.

Wellington (Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke, 1769-1852). Autograph letter signed, ‘Wellington’, Cartaxo, 13 December 1810, in brown ink on laid paper, marked at the head ‘Private & confidential’, addressed to C[harles] Stuart, 3 pages with sentiment and signature as one line on fourth page, light uniform toning, 4to (Qty: 1)A very revealing letter conveying Wellington’s opinion of Spaniards: ‘ It is difficult to understand the Spaniards exactly, they are such a mixture of haughtiness and low intrigue. The Marquis de la Romana and the officers about him are … perfectly happy with their reception here, and the manner in which they have been treated. I have been civil to all the other officers, as far as they have come within my reach; and they have been treated with great attention by all the General Officers of the army; and their men are as well, if not better off than our own. But I always doubt a Spaniard being satisfied with anything; and I should not be surprised if O’Donnell particularly, and possibly others, expressed dissatisfaction at being here’. Gurwood, Dispatches of Field Marshal the Duke of Wellington , 1838. Volume VII, pages 37-38.
