Bader is upheld as an inspirational leader and hero of the era, not least because he fought despite having lost both legs in a pre-war flying accident. Green, Lawrence G. STRANGE AFRICA 237x157mm About the Author: Lawrence G. Green Lawrence (“Laurie”) George Green (1900 – 14 May 1972) was a South African journalist and author. Eschewing any grandiose view of his literature and his lifestyle, he wrote for the layman and general reading entertainment as a raconteur. As such his writings, though well populated with researched fact through his wide travels and many hours of research in the South African and British archives, do not constitute in any strict sense historical or academic reference works. Nevertheless, he remains frequently cited as a recorder of little remembered or noted fact of some historical or cultural significance in the southern African domain. Description: Book is a hardcover which is bound in red cloth, and has gilt lettering on the spine. It has 288 pages and 57 b/w Illustrations. Slight bump marks to the head and heel of the spine. The spine and a bit of the front cover are sunned, and the corners of the book are a bit bent. Dust marks on the top and bottom edge. Light offsetting on the front and rear pastedown, and also on the front free and rear end page. Some dirt marks are visible on the front free end page, and there is also slight foxing on the title page. The binding is tight and square. Book is in good condition. Catlin (Gail) LIQUID CRYSTAL PAINTING (signed by the artist) 4to (295 x 230 mm) 27 pages, colour plates, pictorial card covers (paperback), a very good copy. The printing of this book has been limited to 750 copies of which the first 100 are numbered and signed by the artist. This is number 10 This copy bears and an additional signature and dedication to a previous owner. ‘Gail Catlin is the first artist in the world to exploit Liquid Crystal as the basis for her artistic creation. This highly sensitive, scientific, substance responds immediately to changing intensities of temperature and light with dramatic shifts in colour, reflectivity and sheen. Thereby it has enabled Gail to create a constantly changing live pictorial surface. Its dynamic chromatic and luminary mutations inject added visual drama and excitement to the artist’s chosen themes – the life of the isolated African desert, the burning sun, the landscape, the huge variety of wildlife and the endless cycles of hunting, killing and devouring.’ Editor’s note.’ Very good Rondebosch Stonehaven Publications No date (circa 1999) Click here to view further details and to bid

A.P.Cartwright/N.Cowan The Old Transvaal 1834-1899 22 X 30cm The wonderful collection of historic photographs of the old South African Republic(De Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek) and its people which this book presents was put together by Mr Nat Cowan, Custodian pf the Bensusan Museum of Photography in Johannesburg. In the course of his researches Mr Cowan noted that the art of photography and the very young republic established by the Voortrekkers beyond the Vaal, were both born at approximately the same time, 1839. This led him to a search for the first photographs ever taken in the new country. He found what he was looking for in the work of some of the itinerant photographers who made their way from the Cape to `the interior` in the 19th century. Here are these early pictures, many of them published for the first time. Hardback with unclipped chipped dustcover, and illustrated endpapers. Frontispiece- 154 pages text, with numerous photographs. Light spots to premlims/endpapers. Very clean copy. Very Good Cape Town Purnell 1978 Click here to view further details and to bid

This book pays tribute to the pioneers of a part of the province which has contributed much towards the general welfare of the Republic of South Africa. . Most of the 1824 settlers of Natal were intent upon trade and they were followed into Natal by the Voortrekkers who were farmers at heart. Similarly the pioneers of the Nieuwe Republiek held mainly to the land for their livelihoods and the story of the infant state is here presented through the medium of the Nieuwe Republiek Staats Courant, now appearing for the first time in translated form.`. Note: Born 21 December 1795, Ormiston, East Lothian, Scotland. Died: 9 August 1883 (aged 87), Leigh, Kent, England. Religion: Congregationalist. In 1820 Moffat and his wife left the Cape and proceeded to Griquatown, where their daughter Mary (who was later to marry David Livingstone) was born. The family later settled at Kuruman, to the north of the Vaal River, among the Batswana people. Here they lived and worked passionately for the missionary cause, until in 1870 they returned to Britain. During this period, Robert Moffat made frequent journeys into the neighbouring regions as far north as the Matabele country. The results of these journeys he communicated to the Royal Geographical Society (Journal 25-38 and Proceedings ii). Whilst in Britain on leave (1839–1843) an account of the family`s experience, Missionary Labours and Scenes in South Africa (1842) was published. He translated the whole of the Bible and The Pilgrim`s Progress into Setswana. Besides his early training as a gardener and farmer, and later as a writer, Moffat developed skills in building, carpentry, printing and as a blacksmith. On his return to England he received a testimonial of £5000.[citation needed] - source: wikipedia very good London John Snow 1842 Click here to view further details and to bid
