Delvaux') in bold black ink to a clear area of the verso. A light smudge only very slightly affects the last two letters of the signature. VG

'I fear that this Brazilian smash will be bad news for Will' HAGGARD H. RIDER: (1856-1925) English Writer of Adventure Novels. A.L.S., H Rider Haggard, one page, 8vo, Ditchingham House, Bungay, 6th November 1891, to his brother Andrew, on black bordered mourning stationery also featuring a printed Egyptian cartouche. Haggard states that he hopes his brother is well again and getting on all right, and also remarks 'I fear that this Brazilian smash will be bad news for Will'. An A.N.S., Andrew C P Haggard, by Andrew Haggard appears at the foot of the letter and reads, in full, 'Dr. Bedingfield, Here you are, a complete letter of my brother's to me'. Some very light, extremely minor age wear and slight traces of former mounting to the verso, VG Andrew C P Haggard (1854-1923) British Lieutenant-Colonel, elder brother of H. Rider Haggard. In the present letter Haggard refers to another elder brother, William Henry Doveton Haggard (1846-1926) British Diplomat who served as the United Kingdom's Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the United States of Brazil from 1906-15. Brazil's second Constitution was written in 1891, in the same year as the present letter, and followed the Proclamation of the Republic in Brazil on 15th November 1889.

NEWMAN JOHN HENRY: (1801-1890) Roman Catholic Cardinal and Theologian. Author of the poem The Dream of Gerontius (1865) which was set to music by Edward Elgar in 1900. A.L.S., John H. Newman, two pages, 8vo, Oriel College, Oxford, 24th September 1840, to Edward Hawkins ('Dear Mr. Provost'). Newman thanks his correspondent for their letter and information and remarks 'Of course I was not surprised in consequence of what you said to Church. I have no intention of taking Tortworth, should it come to me, and wish you to understand me as hereby declining it'. The Cardinal also expresses his sorrow at his correspondent's barn having been burnt and refers to mutual acquaintances, 'Church has left Oxford, but the Dean and A. Christi are here. I propose leaving for ten days next Tuesday or Wednesday'. Some light traces of former mounting to the verso, only very slightly affecting a few words of text, but not the signature. KITCHENER HERBERT: (1850-1916) 1st Earl Kitchener. British Field Marshal of World War I. L.S., Kitchener, two pages, 8vo, Belgrave Square, 16th July 1902, to an unidentified correspondent. Kitchener writes a letter of testimonial for Private Milner of the 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Light Infantry, his servant in South Africa from January 1900 to July 1902, and states 'he has served me to my entire satisfaction and I can thoroughly recommend him as a steady, reliable, and hard working man'. With blank integral leaf. A few neat splits at the edges of some folds, and some light overall dust staining and age wear, only very slightly affecting the text, but not the signature, G

On the marriage of the Duke of Wellington DISRAELI BENJAMIN: (1804-1881) British Prime Minister 1868, 1874-80. A good A.L.S., with his initial D, eight pages, 8vo, House of Commons, London, n.d. ('Friday', 19th April 1839), to 'My dearest'. Disraeli informs his correspondent that he understands the House will be divided tonight 'and that the majority is to be under 20', further remarking 'Nothing can be conceived more wearisome' and continuing 'Morpeth the only exception for tho' bombastic in his manner….for anyone but a Cabinet minister who may try & do anything, he has imagination & command of language, & tho' occasionally ludicrous from his manner…he always interests & never bores'. Disraeli also writes of a marriage which took place the day before, 'a great concourse, & much cheering in the streets; & would have been in the church, had not the Dean of Carlisle with apostolic naiveté preliminary warned the audience; church crowded, 3 or 4 ladies in the pulpit; pews engaged weeks before', also adding 'I have not seen the Lady, but according to Douro she weighs 11 stone 5lb - I hear a beautiful face, but somewhat ungainly figure….Douro….dined at the Carlton the day before, for he sat next to me. They were married before 12 and at four he was resting in the Park - There I suppose, as Sir Hugh says, are affections….during the ceremony the Lady agitated & went to bed afterwards. At ½ past five they drove off to Stratfield Saye. The Duke walked into the church star & gartered & walked home, much cheered; the mob wanted to take the horses out of Douro's carriage…'. An entertaining letter of fine content. With a foreword by Norman Reid and an essay by Richard Morphet, the catalogue also features numerous illustrations (a few in colour, most are black and white). Hopkinson was killed in action on the raid) A.L.S., May Hopkinson, two pages, 8vo, Oldham, Lancashire, 29th September 1977, to [Alan] Cooper, explaining that she is Hopkinson's youngest sister, 'I was only 16 when he was killed, but I would like to help in any way I can....', and with an 8vo page of holograph biographical notes confirming Hopkinson's date of birth, education and employment before joining the RAF in 1941; Edward McFadden (pupil of Kenneth Earnshaw 1918-1943 British Flight Officer, Navigator of Lancaster ED925/G AJ-M of 617 Squadron on the Dambusters Raid, 16th May 1943. Earnshaw was killed in action on the raid) Lengthy A.L.S., Edward McFadden, seven pages, folio, William's Lake, Canada, 10th July 1977, to [Alan] Cooper, discussing at length his experiences of being taught by Earnshaw in Canada, in part, 'He was our teacher for only two short terms, but he has left an impression exceeding that of all the others...He pitched for the village baseball team...it was wonderful to have a person like this, a baseball player, and a man of the world, within reach - he was our boss, our leader, but always remained on our level. Ken Earnshaw was not only athletic and strong, but was physically tough as well...(he)...had a volatile side to his nature, and was known to erupt violently from time to time.....To my knowledge Ken Earnshaw never attended church....On the day of Ken's death, May 16, 1943, my mother also passed away. The shock and sorrow of those distant days was deepened by the word of Ken's untimely end. We had received word some time before that his tour of duty was complete and that he would soon be back in Canada. The loss of our greatly respected teacher was a bitter disappointment'. CLEVELAND GROVER: (1837-1908) American President 1885-89, 1893-97. Fountain pen ink signature ('Grover Cleveland') and date, 5th March 1889, in his hand on a slim oblong 8vo piece. Also signed by Frances Cleveland (1864-1947) First Lady of the United States 1886-89, 1893-97, with her name alone in fountain pen ink. Some light central vertical and horizontal folds, VG The present signatures were signed just one day after Cleveland left the office of United States President for the first time on 4th March 1889.

FABERGE PETER CARL: (1846-1920) Russian Jeweller, known for his Faberge eggs. Appointed Goldsmith and Jeweller to the Russian Imperial Court in 1885. An extremely rare T.L.S., K Faberge, in Cyrillic, two pages, 4to, Petrograd, 11th May 1916, to Otto Ottovich Bauer, in Cyrillic. Faberge writes a formal letter to Bauer, confirming that he will be employed in Faberge's commercial and industrial enterprise for a period of five years from 1916 to 1921, and detailing in six numbered paragraphs various conditions relating to the employment, in part, '1. As remuneration for your work, you will receive 18,000 roubles a year, paid on a monthly basis of 1,500 roubles. 2. You have the right for six weeks holiday every year. 3. I undertake responsibilities for the payment of the income tax that you may have to pay….5. This contract is also compulsory for my successors and, in case of transformation of my enterprise into joint stock company, this contract is also compulsory for the company….' A manuscript note, in an unidentified hand, to the lower half of the final page of the letter requires Bauer to certify the contents of the letter (which he did not do). WILSON WOODROW: (1856-1924) American President 1913-21. T.L.S., Woodrow Wilson, one page, 4to, New Jersey, 4th April 1911, to Richard C. Maclaurin, on the printed stationery of the State of New Jersey Executive Department. Wilson informs his correspondent that he would have gladly accepted an invitation, but is 'bound by a score of imperative engagements and cannot stir abroad at the time of your meeting and banquet'. [MAYNARD WILLIAM]: (1923-1943) English Sergeant, Front Gunner of Lancaster ED936/G AJ-H of 617 Squadron on the Dambusters Raid, 16th May 1943. A fellow crew member of Burns', Maynard was also killed in action on 20th December 1943 as a result of the aircraft, on which he was Front Gunner, and being piloted by Geoffrey Rice, was shot down above Merbes-Le Chateau in Belgium. An A.L.S., Janet Maynard by his mother, one page, small 4to, Wandsworth, 8th October 1950, to Mrs. Burns, mother of Stephen Burns. Maynard states that she visited the cemetery at Gosselies in Belgium last month and writes 'The wooden crosses have been replaced by iron ones painted white, the shape of the graves has been done away with and they are laid out as a rose garden. The roses (pink ones) were in bloom when we were there. The garden was very nicely kept. Indeed I feel a lot happier and comforted since I went', further addding 'The rose I enclose (no longer present) came from the tree by your son's cross. I thought you would like it'. ZOLA EMILE: (1840-1902) French Writer. A good A.L.S., Emile Zola, two pages, 8vo, Paris, 31st August 1867, to 'Mon cher confrere', in French. Zola informs his correspondent that he will be able to send him the remainder of Un Mariage d'Amour in eight or ten days time, so the typesetters will have all the time they need, and continues 'It had been decided that the novel would be published in three parts. I very much regret that you were not able to publish all of the copy I sent you in the September edition. You must still have twenty to twenty five pages left over. I will be sending you about eighty, so that will make a total of a little over a hundred. Please try, therefore, to set enough space aside for me so that it all goes into the October edition. You will do me a great service, since I would like to be able to publish it all at once and I do not want to wait until December, the month of gift books. The readers really would find it a very long novel if it were published over four months. You will see that I am pleading the case for the magazine as well as for myself'. Zola concludes 'In any case, you know that by counting the pages that you already have and those that I am going to send you, the novel will not amount to more than a hundred or so leaves. You can therefore decide on and finalise your page layout, no matter what'. A letter of good literary content. Some very light, minor age wear and a small, neat split to the left edge of the central horizontal fold, otherwise VG Un Mariage d'Amour, better known by its alternative title Therese Raquin is a novel by Zola which was first published, as the present letter illustrates, in serial format in the journal L'Artiste in 1867. It was published in book format in the December of the same year. The novel was a commercial and artistic success for Zola and achieved additional publicity when the critic Louis Ulbach described it as 'putrid' in a long diatribe. A play of the novel was first performed in 1873.

ARLINGTON EARL OF: (1618-1685) English Statesman, a member of the Cabal Ministry. Lord Chamberlain 1674-85. A.L.S., Arlington, two pages, folio, Whitehall, 13th June 1676, to 'My Lorde' (annotated in pencil as being Sir Horatio, 1st Viscount Townshend). Arlington writes concerning preparations for the reassembling of Parliament and the differences between his correspondent and the monarch, King Charles II, in part, '...Wee are making as great preparations for the reassembling againe of the old Parlomont as if it were to come sooner than its time, though noe such thing is yet talked off but it is only to confront those who seeme to live in a beliefe still that the old one will bee disolved and a new called speedily but I confess it be but little probability of it...'. With blank integral leaf. Some extremely minor, very light age wear, VG Horatio Townshend (1630-1687) 1st Viscount Townshend. English Politician, a supporter of King Charles II who played an important role in the restoration of the monarchy in 1660.

CLAY & COOPER: CLAY CASSIUS (1942-2016) Muhammad Ali. American Boxer, World Heavyweight Champion & COOPER HENRY (1934-2011) English Boxer, British & European Heavyweight Champion 1970-71 and Commonwealth Heavyweight Champion 1959-71. Individual vintage ink signatures by both boxers; Clay a rare bold blue ink signature ('Cassius Clay') on an oblong slim 8vo piece and Cooper a good bold blue ink signature ('Henry Cooper') on a page removed from an autograph album. A very light vertical central fold and some light overall creasing to the piece signed by Clay, otherwise about VG to EX, 2 The present signatures date from around 1963 when Clay and Cooper met in the boxing ring for the first of their two memorable bouts. The fight on 18th June 1963 was staged at Wembley Stadium in London, Clay winning when the referee stopped the fight in the fifth round.

McCARTNEY & STARR: McCARTNEY PAUL (1942- ) & STARR RINGO (1940- ) British Musicians, both members of The Beatles. An excellent pair of vintage blue ink signatures by both Paul McCartney ('love Paul McCartney') and Ringo Starr ('Love Ringo Starr') individually on an oblong 8vo card bearing the printed word Autographs at the head, neatly clipped from the verso of a Qantas airlines First Class menu. Dated in the hand of a Qantas crew member 19th February 1968 alongside the signatures. Some extremely light, very minor age wear, VG McCartney and Starr flew from London to New Delhi on 19th February 1968, the day on which the present signatures were obtained.

VICTORIA: (1819-1901) Queen of the United Kingdom Great Britain & Ireland 1837-1901. Ink signature ('Victoria R I') on a slim oblong 8vo piece, evidently removed from the head of an official document and annotated in ink in an unidentified hand 'From James Evans Free pardon'. Neatly laid down and with a very neat vertical split to the centre, only very slightly affecting the conclusion of the signature. Together with a selection of signed clipped pieces (4) and signed Free Front envelope panels (4) by eight of the ten British Prime Ministers who served under Queen Victoria comprising Viscount Melbourne (1835-41; addressed to the Lord Mayor at the Mansion House), Lord John Russell (1846-52, 1865-66), Earl of Derby (1852, 1858-59, 1866-68; addressed to Sir James Fergusson at the Home Office), Viscount Palmerston (1855-58, 1859-65), Benjamin Disraeli (1868, 1874-80), William Gladstone (1868-74, 1880-85, 1886, 1892-94), Marquis of Salisbury (1885-86, 1886-92, 1895-1902) and Earl of Rosebery (1894-95; signed with his initial R). CHAPMAN HERBERT: (1878-1934) English Football Manager, famous for his association with Arsenal F.C. from 1925-34. Scarce T.L.S., Herbert Chapman, one page, 4to, Elland Road, Leeds, 18th January 1916, to J. B. Hamilton, on the printed stationery of Leeds City Association Football Club. Chapman writes, in full, 'The enclosed (no longer present) has been addressed to me but unfortunately we disposed of all our spare kit months ago. I have acknowledged receipt and if you can assist them from your funds should feel greatly obliged'. A Leeds City Tramways purple ink received stamp appears above the text and with some pencil and ink annotations, one only very slightly affecting a few words of text but not the signature. Autographs of Chapman are scarce in any form as a result of his untimely death. A few small pinholes to the upper left corner and some light age wear, otherwise VG Chapman managed Leeds City from 1912-18, resigning unexpectedly and without giving any reasons in December 1918. As football resumed in 1919-20, following the end of World War I, Leeds City were accused by a former player of financial irregularities involving illegal payments to guest players during wartime matches. Leeds City were subsequently expelled from the Football League in October 1919 and five club officials, including Chapman, were banned from football for life. The club was dissolved and the Elland Road ground was taken over by the newly formed Leeds United. Chapman appealed against the ban, which was overturned, and he later went on to unprecedented success with Arsenal.

DU MAURIER DAPHNE: (1907-1989) British Author. Incomplete A.L., unsigned, being the first four pages of a longer letter, 8vo, n.p. (at sea, en route to Egypt), n.d. ('Monday 16', 1936), to [Foy Quiller-Couch], on the printed stationery of S. S. Cameronia. Du Maurier states that she is reaching the end of her voyage, but has no complaints as the sea has been calm the whole time, informing her friend, 'The first day out - at least the day after we sailed - I kept to my bunk as the ship appeared to have a rolling sort of motion that I wasn't too happy about. Also we were in the Bay of Biscay, also the day was cold and grey, and bearing Miss. Robert's maxim in mind I decided “There was nothing to get up for“' and further referring to her young daughter and husband ('a little pale about the gills') and the rest of the trip, 'Off Spain the weather grew lovely, and ever since we have had blue skies and brilliant sunshine. We passed Gibraltar, and wished we had been going there instead of Egypt. It was rather like St. Austell Bay.', and providing an anecdote, 'Only excitement so far was yesterday afternoon when the little ships' doctor, a pink & white shy fellow, came up rather nervously and said “Mrs. Browning, can you sew baby clothes“? “No“, I answered, rather taken a back. “Oh dear“, he said, “I'm in rather a predicament. I have just delivered a child into the world, and the mother did not know she was expecting“!! All the ladies of the ship were immediately summoned, and we searched our trunks for old vests and odds & ends. I went down to see the unfortunate woman, who was lying in bed with an expression of bewilderment'. Some light creasing, otherwise about VG Foy Quiller-Couch - daughter of British writer Arthur Quiller-Couch (1863-1944), and a life-long friend of Du Maurier. Indeed, Du Maurier was accompanied by Foy Quiller-Couch when she became inspired with the storyline for her novel Jamaica Inn. In 1930 the two ladies were staying at Jamaica Inn and went riding on Bodmin Moor. They became lost in bad weather conditions and apparently sheltered for some time in a derelict cottage on the moor but were eventually led back to Jamaica Inn by their horses. Du Maurier accompanied her husband, Lieutenant General Frederick Browning (1896-1965), to Egypt when the 2nd Battalion, Grenadier Guards, of which he was the Commanding Officer, were deployed to Egypt in 1936.

RUSSELL BERTRAND: (1872-1970) British Philosopher, Mathematician, Historian & Writer, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1950. T.L.S., Bertrand Russell, one page, oblong 8vo, Carn Voel, Porthcurno, 16th August n.y. (1920s), to a gentleman (probably Hubert Douglas Henderson). Russell writes concerning the journalist Griffin Barry and assures his correspondent that 'all the facts are as stated, and well documented, the documents having been placed by him with his solicitor in London', further remarking 'I hope that you will give the matter prominence as the previous Press reports have been damaging to Mr Barry, and redress is due to him'. Annotated in ink in an unidentified hand to the upper left corner with the title of the newspaper Nation. Some light circular staining and minor wrinkling to the four corners, caused by previous mounting to the verso, only very slightly affecting the text and signature. The manuscript document is an order for a payment of two hundred and fifty pounds to be made to Hugh, Lord Clinton, being one quarter of his annuity of one thousand pounds due to him as a Gentleman of His Majesty's Bedchamber. Signed by Walpole in the right margin and also bearing various countersignatures including Sir George Oxenden (1694-1775) English Politician, Lord of the Treasury and Sir William Yonge (c.1693-1755) English Politician, Lord of the Treasury. Also signed by Lord Clinton to the verso, acknowledging receipt of the contents of the order on 5th February 1730. ROBERTS FREDERICK: (1832-1914) British Field Marshal, Victoria Cross winner for his actions at the Indian Mutiny on 2nd January 1858. Commander-in-Chief of British Forces in South Africa, 1900. A.L.S., Roberts, two pages, 8vo, The Royal Hospital, Dublin, 9th April 1899, to Sir William Broadbent. Roberts states that he would have supported his correspondent's brother's application for the appointment of Military Secretary to the India Office had he not already written in favour of another candidate, also adding 'Another reason is that (I am told) Sir Oliver Newmarch's succession has been decided upon. I gather that my nominee is not the lucky man, in which case I hope your brother has been selected, as I believe him to be well fitted for the position'. Some light dust staining to the edges of the first page. Together with Redvers Buller (1839-1908) British General, Victoria Cross winner for his actions at Zululand on 28th March 1879. A.L.S., Redvers Buller, one page, 8vo, Crediton, Devonshire, 23rd December 1879, to Lady Northcote. Buller states that it was kind of his correspondent to allow him to delay in replying to her invitation, which he now adds he will be glad to accept. With blank integral leaf (slight traces of former mounting to the verso). Oliver Newmarch (1834-1920) British Major General, Military Secretary to the India Office 1889-99. He was succeeded in the post by General Sir Edward Stedman (1842-1925). Alice Maude Stephen (d.1934) Lady Northcote. Wife of Henry Stafford Northcote (1846-1911) 1st Baron Northcote. British Politician and Colonial Administrator, Governor-General of Australia 1904-08.

A very fine signed sepia 11 x 8 photograph depicting the bearded cricketer, in his cricket cap and whites, standing at the crease and holding a bat in his hands. He poses on a large, open cricket ground surrounded by trees. Photograph by Russell & Sons. Signed ('W. G. Grace') in dark ink to the lower photographer's mount and dated 1903 in his hand. Signed photographs of Grace of this size and quality are rare and desirable. Neatly mounted and with some very light age wear to the image and a minor stain to the lower mount, not affecting the signature, about VG

The partially printed document is a military commission appointing John Ponsonby, Viscount Duncannon to be a Lieutenant Colonel Commandant of the Duke of York's Marybone Volunteers. Countersigned at the foot by Charles Philip Yorke (1764-1834) British Politician, Secretary at War 1801-03 and Home Secretary 1803-04. With a blind embossed paper seal affixed. Some overall age wear and minor rubbing (resulting in a few areas of illegible text) and a few circular stains, some affecting the text. The King's signature is a little light, although legible. Together with Victoria (1819-1901) Queen of the United Kingdom Great Britain & Ireland 1837-1901. D.S., Victoria R. I., as Queen, at the head (her signature a little light in places), one page (vellum), oblong folio, Court at Saint James's, 8th June 1848. The partially printed document is a military commission appointing Henry Hill Dawson to be an Ensign in the 19th Regiment of Foot. Countersigned at the foot by George Grey (1799-1882) British Politician, Home Secretary 1846-52, 1855-58 & 1861-66. With blind embossed paper seal (at some point removed from its original position and now nealty re-affixed). Some light foxing at the edges, just affecting the Queen's signature, and some minor overall age wear, about G to VG, 2

From the famous Western section Pullman train that departed from Waterloo at 12.30 arriving at Bournemouth West at 2.52 steam hauled until 1966 usually by Bulleid Merchant Navy's and Light pacifics. In original ex loco condition with a small crack to the top. This is the first time one of these headboards has been offered for sale.

This is the 8 hole fixing type and is from the Hampshire station on the former Totton, Hythe and Fawley Light Railway, which was built along the coast of Southampton Water to connect Totton and Fawley and to provide a freight link from the South Western Main Line to Fawley Refinery, closed in 1966. In ex station condition with a couple of chips. Note Hythe Kent Targets have 6 fixing holes.
