δ Donald MacIntyre (British 1923 - 2009) - Sea Evening Light Oil on paper Signed with intials lower right 20 x 27cm (8 x 10 3/4in.) Donald McIntyre was born in Leeds in 1923 to Scottish parents. He spent his childhood at Garelochhead in the west of Scotland. McIntyre was greatly inspired by his early experiences of the Scottish landscape and James Wright who encouraged McIntyre to develop a palette following the Scottish Colourist tradition. However, McIntyre did not become a full time painter until he was forty. McIntyre initially trained as a dentist in Glasgow but regularly attented evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art which was located opposite the hospital. McIntyre s subject matter always returned to coastal scenes of the British Isles, particularly in Scotland and Wales, where he lived for 45 years. Most summers he painted on Iona, iconic images of which were produced by some of the most important Scottish colourists including Frances Cadell and Samuel Peploe. Painting mainly in acrylic he captured with vibrant colours the light and life of his subject matter with masterly small and broad brush strokes. Works by McIntyre are held in collections across the United Kingdom including the personal collection of H.R.H The Duke of Edinburgh, The Newport Art Gallery and London University. McIntyre has also exhibited his works as a number of galleries most importantly the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy.IMPORTANT: This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.
