A Victorian Oil Lamp, with brass and opaque glass ionic column pedestal, together with another pair of oil lamp bases, three graduated covered copper sauce pans, a three light candleabra and a pot crane (qty)Oil lamp - some flat chips around the bottom rim of the glass column. The lamp has never been converted. Brass components fairly dull. Shade free from cracks but wit chips around the bottom rim. Burner adjusters appear to be working. Keynes (John Maynard) How to Pay for the War, first edition, original blue boards [uncorrected issue], light toning to spine ends, the odd finger soiling mark, 8vo, 1940. *** The uncorrected version of Keynes's most successful essay in persuasion and the application of his General Theory to wartime economy. A corrected version, issued in orange printed boards, was published a few months later. "Apart from suggesting ways of adding greatly to the financial resources of the government, this inaugurated the idea of an iron ration at low, fixed prices of a list of necessities in lower-income budgets, with government subsidies if required. He proposed also to assist families with low incomes by introducing family allowances payable directly to the mother. The net effect of these concessions would have been to effect an actual improvement in the condition of the worst-off compared with pre-war years" (ODNB).
