Jewish customs.- Addison (Lancelot) The Present State of the Jews: (More Particularly Relating to those in Barbary) Wherein is Contained an Exact Account of their Customs, Secular and Religious, to which is Annexed a Summary Discourse of the Misna, Talmud, and Gemara, first edition, engraved frontispiece, woodcut initials and headpieces, K4 with short tear to lower margin, occasional foxing and some light browning, ink inscriptions to title and endpapers, contemporary calf, rebacked, wear to corners, a little rubbed, [Wing A526], by J.C. for William Crooke, at the Green Dragon without Temple-Bar; and to be sold by John Courtney bookseller in Sarum, 1675.⁂ Rare first edition of this close and careful study of Jewish life and customs. Joseph Addison served seven years as chaplain of the garrison in Tangiers, during which time he became interested in the customs and habits of the Jewish community there. Provenance: C. Tooke, and are to be sold at the Ship in St. Pauls Church-yard, 1675.⁂ The first work on horticulture by Evelyn, dedicated to his friend Thomas Henshaw, at whose suggestion Evelyn undertook the translation. Forestry.- Cook (Moses) The Manner of Raising, Ordering, and improving Forrest-Trees: Also, How to Plant, Make and Keep Woods, Walks, Avenues, Lawns, Hedges, &c., first edition, title within double-rule border, 4 engraved plates (2 closely shaved at fore-margin), occasional light damp-staining to head, the odd spot but very clean generally, bookplate to pastedown, modern calf, [Fussell pp.39-40; Henrey 38; Kress 1407; Wing C6032], small 4to, for Peter Parker at the Leg and Star over against the Royal Exchange in Cornhill, 1676.⁂ Cook was gardener to the Earl of Essex at Cassiobury Park (near Watford) and laid out many woodland walks and avenues including, reputedly, an avenue of 296 lime trees.Provenance: Royal Agricultural Society of England (bookplate with printed notice donating the book on behalf of Raymond Wheatley-Hubbard).
Morocco & Algeria.- P[hilips] (G[eorge]) The Present State of Tangier... to Which is Added the Present State of Algiers, 2 parts in 1 vol., first edition, licence leaf at beginning, divisional titles, early ink ownership inscription to title, contemporary sheep, neatly and sympathetically rebacked, light wear to extremities, rubbed, [Wing P24A], 12mo, printed for Henry Herringman, at the sign of the Anchor in the lower walk of the New Exchange, 1676.⁂ Scarce, with only a handful of copies appearing at auction. George Philips (?1599-1696), was employed as secretary to George O'Brien, Second Earl Inchiquin, then Governor of Tangier. His account is in part a propaganda attempt on behalf of his master, with his descriptions of plentiful livestock, fruits and vegetables designed to counter the contemporary reports of the deprivations caused by the Spain's renewal of its embargo on the city in mid-1670s. Turkey.- [Chassepol (François de)] The History of the Grand Visiers, Mahomet, and Achmet Coprogli, of the Three Last Grand Signiors, their Sultana's and Chief Favourites, translated by John Evelyn Jr., first edition in English, with initial imprimatur f., lacking final blank f., title within double-ruled border, engraved frontispiece by W. Dolle (closely trimmed at head within plate margin), light offsetting onto title, occasional light spotting or marginal soiling, a few underlinings or marginal markings in coloured pencil, 20th century half calf, spine gilt with green morocco label, [Atabey 224; Blackmer 327; Koç 72a; Wing C3728], 8vo, for H. Brome, at the Gun at the west-end of St. Pauls, 1677.⁂ A translation from Chassepol's work of the previous year, with much on the war between Turkey and Poland of 1672-76.
Glaser (Christopher) The compleat chymist, or, A new treatise of chymistry. Teaching by a short and easy method all its most necessary preparations, first edition in English, 3 folding engraved plates, sigs. A-D loose or becoming so, light foxing and browning, contemporary calf, rebacked, corners worn, rubbed, [Duveen p. 251; Wellcome III, p.121; Wing G843], 8vo, for John Starkey at the Miter in Fleet-street, near Temple-Bar, 1677.⁂ First and only edition in English of Glaser's only book. He was demonstrator to Vallot, professor of chemistry at the Jardin du Roi, Paris, and apothecary to the King and the Duc d'Orléans. Glaserite, a solid solution of potassium sulphate and sodium, is named after him.
Gardens.- W[orlidge] (J[ohn]) Systema Horti-culturae: or, The Art of Gardening in Three Books, first edition, engraved additional pictorial title by F.H. Van Houe and 3 plates, a few small neat repairs to engraved title margin, occasional light marginal soiling, but a very good, clean copy generally, handsome later polished tree calf, gilt, spine gilt in compartments with green morocco label, [Fussell pp.68-72; Henrey 369; McDonald pp.116-121; Wing W3603], 8vo, Printed for Tho. Burrel, at the Golden Ball under St. Dunstan's Church in Fleetstreet and Will.Hensman, at the King's Head in Westminster Hall, 1677.⁂ The rare companion work to Worlidge's Systema Agriculturae, we can trace only a handful of copies at auction. Includes fountains, trees, and kitchen gardens.

The History of Appian of Alexandria... made English by J[ohn] D[avies], 2 parts in 1 vol., first edition of this translation, title in red and black, 1p. advertisements, some fraying to title margins, browning to prelims, small hole to S3 and 3R3 with loss to 1 or 2 letters of text, heavy surface soiling to 2B3 verso and 2B4 recto, occasional scattered spotting or light soiling, contemporary calf, rebacked, retaining original backstrip, [Wing A3579], folio, for John Amery at the Peacock against S. Dunstan's Church in Fleet-street, 1679.
Boyle (Robert) The sceptical chymist: or Chymico-physical doubts & paradoxes, touching the experiments whereby vulgar spagirists are wont to endeavour to evince their salt, sulphur and mercury, 2 parts in 1 vol., second edition, with advertisement f. following a2, O1 with small hole to upper margin, minor worming to first half with occasional loss to 1 or 2 letters of text, some light marginal soiling and occasional dampstaining, a few ff. lightly browned, modern morocco, [Wing B4022; PMM 141 for 1661 edition; Neville I, 208; Fulton 34; Madan 3261 & 3260], 8vo, Oxford, printed by Henry Hall for Ric. Davis, and B. Took at the Ship in St. Pauls Church-Yard, 1680.⁂ Second edition, but the first to include the second part, of "the most famous book in the history of chemistry" (Neville). This copy with the rare inserted advertisement leaf, which states that the book was printed in 1679. The original edition (comprising part 1 only) was published in 1661 - PMM describes it as "one of the most significant milestones on the way to the chemical revolution of Lavoisier in the late eighteenth century."
Law.- [Morice (James)] A Briefe Treatise of Oathes exacted by Ordinaries and Ecclesiasticall Iudges to answere generallie to all such Articles or Interrogatories, as it pleaseth them to propound, first edition, woodcut initial, lacking final blank f., light surface soiling to title, E4 with short tear to margin, a very good copy generally, bookplate to pastedown, 19th century purple morocco, gilt, g.e., small 4to, [Middelburg], [by Richard Schilders], [?1590].⁂ While serving as MP for Colchester and recorder of Maldon, Morice was one of sixteen lawyers asked by the privy council in 1588 to prepare bills on judicial reform and to consider the revision of existing statutes. His Briefe Treatise attacked the ecclesiastical courts' use of the oath ex officio, which obliged defendants to swear (on pain of imprisonment) to answer questions put to them before any formal charges had been brought. Claiming that it smacked of the Spanish Inquisition, Morice argued that tendering the oath was contrary to canon law as well as the common law of England, and that it was a "wrong and injury to the freedom and liberty of the subjectes".In 1593 Morice introduced two bills into the House of Commons that aimed to outlaw oaths, inquisitions, and subscriptions, and to abolish imprisonment as a sanction against refusing them.Provenance: James Maidment (bookplate).
Astronomy.- Wittie (Robert) Ouranoskopia [graece]. Or, a Survey of the Heavens. A Plain description of the admirable Fabrick and Motions of the Heavenly Bodies, as they are discovered to the Eye by the Telescope... To which is added the Gout-Raptures, first edition, title within double-rule border, with final advertisement f., lacking prelims a1-2 (dedicatory verses by Brian Fairfax and T. Guidott), some light marginal browning, later diced calf, gilt, neatly rebacked, retaining original backstrip, [Wing W3229], by J. M. for the author, and are to be sold by R. Clavell and J. Robinson in St Paul's Church-Yard, and R. Boulter at the Turks-head in Cornhil, 1681.⁂ Includes discussion of the telescopes of Hooke and Gallileo and the probability of other inhabited stars.
Witchcraft.- Tryal of Witches (A), at the Assizes Held at Bury St. Edmonds for the County of Suffolk; on the Tenth Day of March, 1664. Before Sir Matthew Hale... then Lord Chief Baron of His Majesties Court of Exchequer, first edition, title within double-rule border, title lightly soiled and neatly restored at inner margin, 4ff. with neat repairs or small portions of restoration to margins, some occasional light marginal foxing or light soiling but good, clean copy generally, mottled calf, gilt, by Riviere, spine rubbed, [Wing T2240], 8vo, for William Shrewsbery at the Bible in Duck-Lane, 1682.⁂ Scarce account of the one of the key witchcraft trials of the seventeenth century, sometimes attributed to Thomas Browne. Browne gave evidence at the trial and his citation of a similar trial in Denmark appeared to influence the jury to bring about a guilty conviction.
Oxford storm.- Harrison (Robert) A Strange Relation of the Suddain Violent Tempest, which happened at Oxford May 31. anno Domini 1682. Together with an enquiry into the probably cause and usual consequents of such like tempests and storms, title with woodcut decoration, title laid down with margins repaired and portion of restoration to head with loss to first word of title and 2 letters of third word partially restored by hand, some light spotting or browning, final f. creased with small hole, not affecting text, early ink name to title, 20th century boards, paper labels to spine and upper cover, [Wing H908], small 4to, for Richard Sherlock booksellour in Oxford, 1682.⁂ Rare, we can trace no other copy at auction. World.- Lithgow (William) Nineteen Years Travels through the most Eminent Places in the Habitable World, woodcut frontispiece and 5 plates only (of 6), all folding, frontispiece with restoration to lower corner within image, lacking Z4&5, occasional light browning, bookplates to pastedowns, rebacked, wear to corners, [Blackmer 1021 for 1640 2nd ed; Wing L2541], 8vo, for John Wright, at the Crown on Ludgate-Hill, and Thomas Passinger at the Three Bibles on London-Bridge, 1682.⁂ Scarce, originally published under the title The Totall Discourse of the Rare Adventures in 1632. Lithgow, a Scot, travelled extensively throughout the Levant, Greece, Constantinople and the Eastern Mediterranean, North Africa, Italy and Spain "He travelled mostly on foot and had a greater knowledge of the interior of the countries he visited than most travellers of this period. He provides interesting details of the society, men, and manners he observed and is probably the earliest authority for coffee-drinking in Europe, Turkish baths, the pigeon-post between Aleppo and Bagdad etc. etc." - Blackmer. Miége (1644-?1718) was a Lausanne-born humanist writer who spent much of his career in England, serving under the Earl of Carlisle, ambassador to Russia, Sweden and Denmark.Provenance: Isaac Routh (early ink inscription to title verso); armorial bookplate with motto "Hinc Spes Effulget"; The Royal Meteorological Society (deaccession label to pastedown dated 1973).
Accademia del Cimento. Italy.- Earthquakes.- Account (An) of the late terrible earthquake in Sicily with most of its particulars, done from the Italian, first edition in English, title within double-rule border, 1p. advertisements, occasional light marginal soiling or damp-staining, modern calf-backed boards with paper label to upper cover, [Wing A316], small 4to, for Richard Baldwin near the Oxford-Arms in Warwick-Lane, 1693.⁂ Scarce report of the powerful earthquake of January 1693 that resulted in the destruction of over 70 towns and the deaths of some 60,000 people.
Asia.- Avril (Philippe) Travels into divers Parts of Europe and Asia, Undertaken by the French King's Order to Discover a New Way by Land into China, 2 parts in 1 vol., first edition in English, title in red and black, lacking A2-4 (prelims) and final advertisement f., title with margins chipped, browned and partially repaired, foxing and light browning, 20th century roan, spine faded, [Wing A4275], 12mo, for Tim. Goodwin, at the Maidenhead over-against St. Dunstan's-Church in Fleetstreet, 1693⁂ Avril set out on his mission to find an overland route to China in 1685. He visited Cyprus, Syria, Asia Minor and Persia before being turned back at Astrakhan. He returned to France via Constantinople, Moldavia and Poland.Provenance: John Lester (ink inscription).

Spanish Moors.- [Luna (Miguel de)] The Life of the Most Illustrious Monarch Almanzor: and of the several revolutions of the mighty empire of the caliphs, and of the African kingdoms. Together with the history of the conquest of Spain by the Moors, title within double-rule border, title closely shaved at foot affecting border, rust-hole to I5, K8 with portion of inner margin torn away, touching text, light foxing, 19th century half claf, rubbed, [Wing L3484C], 8vo, for Dan. Proposing a Sure Method for Encouraging Navigation, and Raising Qualified Seamen for the Well Manning of their Majesties Fleet on any Occasion, first edition, title within double-rule border, additional wood-engraved title (closely shaved at foot, affecting last line of imprint), with additional advertisement inserted after B3, occasional light foxing, a few ff. closely shaved at foot, with loss to a few signatures and catchwords (touching text on F2 & 3), 20th century speckled half calf, [Kress 1823; Wing S341], small 4to, for Will. Miller at the Gilded Acorn in St. Paul's Church-yard, 1693.⁂ Written by St. Lo following his 2 years of captivity in France, during which time he witnessed France's ability to raise a large, professional naval force. This imprint rare with only 5 copies listed on ESTC.

Music theory .- Holder (William) A Treatise of the Natural Grounds, and Principles of Harmony, first edition, title within double-rule border, 2 engraved plates of musical notation, 1 folding, errata f. after contents, occasional light browning, a few ff. closely trimmed at head, touching page-numbers, L1 with portion of margin torn away, just touching text, half morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, [Wing H2389A], 8vo, by J. Heptinstall, for John Carr, at the Middle-Temple-Gate, in Fleet-street, 1694.⁂ Important treatise exploring the physics and acoustics of music. Holder was married Christopher Wren's sister and was an occasional tutor to his brother-in-law. One of 3 issues published the same year, all scarce, ESTC lists 7 copies with this imprint.

Calligraphy.- Seddon (John) The Pen-Mans Paradis both Pleasant & Profitable; or, Examples of all ye usuall Hands of this Kingdome, first edition, engraved frontispiece portrait, title, dedication and 32 plates, portrait trimmed to margin and laid down with loss to lower corner and several repaired tears, title rather browned and soiled, laid down with chip to head, second and last plates laid down with repaired tears and chips, foxing and dampstaining, light soiling, occasional early scribbling or colouring, later roan-backed limp boards, rather rubbed and worn, oblong folio, Sold by Iohn Stuart at the Old Three Bibles & Ink Bottles ye corner of ye square on London Bridge, [1695].⁂ A rare and attractive work, Seddon was much admired for his ornamental penmanship.

Newly turned out of French into English, first edition in English, woodcut device on title, first word of title within woodcut entablature, woodcut initials and head-piece, with final blank f., D4 with portion of fore-margin restored, not affecting text, 2C2 with lower margin restored with loss to catchword, light worming throughout with occasional minor loss to text, several lines of text heavily crossed through with much of text still visible but occasionally causing holing without significant loss, occasional light marking or staining, a few underlinings and early ink notes to margins, bookplates to pastedown, later calf with blindstamped central lozenge to covers, rebacked, [STC 15489], small 4to, by the widdow Orwin for Thomas Man, dwelling in Pater-noster row at the signe of the Talbot, 1595.⁂ The first English translation of La Satyre Ménippée de la vertu du Catholicon d'Espagne (Tours, 1594), political satire on the Catholic League, praised by Diderot in his Encyclopédie.Provenance: Jack Smith and John Brian Smith (bookplates).
Feminism.- [Drake (Judith)] An Essay in Defence of the Female Sex. In which are inserted the Characters of a Pedant, a Squire, a Beau, a Vertuoso, a Poetaster, a City-Critick, &c...by a Lady, first edition, engraved frontispiece of 'The Compleat Beau', title within double-rule border, light offsetting onto title, contemporary panelled calf, splitting to joints, spine ends chipped, 8vo, for A. Roper and E. Wilkinson at the Black Boy, and R. Clavel at the Peacock, in Fleetstreet, 1696.⁂ The first English feminist tract, also attributed to Mary Astell but now generally accepted to be by Judith Drake whose husband wrote the commendatory verses at the beginning. The treatise is a defence against male accusations of ignorance, vanity, enviousness etc. of women and also addresses the faults of men, particularly satirizing some of hercontemporaries.
Medicine.- Boulton (Richard) A Treatise of the Reason of Muscular Motion: or the Efficient Causes of the Contraction of a Muscle, first edition, with initial imprimatur f. and 2 final advertisement ff., title within double-ruled border, imprimatur f. chipped and frayed at foot, D2 with loss to lower corner, not affecting text, light marginal browning, some soiling towards end, modern panelled calf, spine faded, [Wing B3833; not in Wellcome], 12mo, by A[wnsham] and J[ohn] Churchill, at the Black Swan in Pater-Noster-Row, 1697.⁂ Boulton's first work, scarce, we can trace only one other complete copy at auction.
Medicine.- Flamand (M.) The Art of Preserving and Restoring Health. Explaining the nature and causes of the distempers that afflict mankind. Also shewing that every man is, or may be, his own best physician. To which is added a treatise of the most simple and effectual remedies for the diseases of men and women, 2 parts in 1 vol., first edition in English, title within double-ruled border, foxing and light staining, ink ownership inscription to head of title, later calf, neatly rebacked and recornered, [Wellcome III, p.30; Wing F1129], 12mo, by R. Bently, in Covent-Garden; H. Bonwick, in St. Paul's Church-yard; and S. Manship, at the Ship in Cornhill, 1697.⁂ Rare at auction, we can trace no complete copy since 1954. The first part is a general discussion of health matters while the second includes specific medical receipts and suggested cures. Provenance: "Rog. Wilkson E. Coll. Uni. Oxon. (ink inscription to title).
Drinking.- M[eriton] (G[eorge]) The Praise Of York-Shire Ale, Wherein Is Enumerated Several Sorts Of Drink, with a Discription of the Humors of Most Sorts of Drunkards. To Which is Added, a York-shire Dialogue, 2 parts in 1 vol., third edition, typographic decorations, light dampstaining, 20th century antique-style calf-backed boards, [Simon 1046; Wing M1810], York, by J. White, for Francis Hildyard at the signe of the Bible in Stone.Gate, 1697.⁂ The third edition (although with no second edition recorded) of Meriton's bawdy verse panegyric to Yorkshire ale, followed by observations on the Yorkshire dialect, pronunciation and proverbs.
Machiavelli (Niccolò) The Florentine Historie, translated by T. Bedingfeld, first edition in English, title within woodcut historiated border, woodcut initials and 8 woodcut headpieces, title a little browned with fore-margin frayed occasionally touching woodcut border, fore-margins closely shaved, occasionally touching printed side-notes, worming to lower margin, not affecting text, occasional light spotting, some light marginal browning or soiling, 17th century blindstamped calf with initials "I.O.W." stamped within fleurons, rebacked, corners a little worn, folio, by T. C. for W. P., 1595.⁂ First edition in English of Machiavelli's history of Florence, commissioned by the Medici family and first published posthumously in 1532.
[Perkins (William)] A Reformed Catholike, or, A declaration shewing how neere we may come to the present Church of Rome in sundrie points of religion, and wherein we must for ever depart from them, title with woodcut ornament, woodcut initials, a few ff, closely shaved at head, occasional light browning, small stain to corner of first few ff., 20th century calf, [STC 19736], small 8vo, [Cambridge], by John Legat, 1598.⁂ Rare and important work by Perkins that proved decisive in drawing a dividing line between the Anglican and Puritan forms of worship.
[Allott (Robert, editor)] Wits Theater of the little World, first edition, title with fine woodcut device of cherubs sittings astride cornucopia and vines entwining a fish, with final errata f., occasional very light browning, cancel slip on 2B1 recto largely degraded, 2I4 with small hole touching text, errata f. with small portion of loss to upper corner, contemporary limp vellum, yapp edges, some light discolouration, a very good copy, [Pforzheimer 1094; STC 382], small 8vo, by J. R. for N. L. & are to be sold at the west doore of Paules, 1599.⁂ First edition of this Elizabethan prose "collection of the flowers of antiquities and histories", the issue with the dedication unsigned. With excerpts from works by Luther, Erasmus, Ovid, Augustine, Pertrach and Froissart among others.
Exorcism.- [Harsnett (Samuel)] A Discovery of the Fraudulent Practises of John Darrel... oncerning the Pretended Possession and Dispossession of William Somers at Nottingham: of Thomas Darling, the boy of Burton at Caldwall: and of Katherine Wright at Mansfield, & Whittington: and of his dealings with one Mary Couper at Nottingham, detecting in some sort the deceitfull trade in these latter dayes of casting out devils, first edition, woodcut device on title, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, title a little soiled and with a few later ink inscriptions, occasional light marginal browning or soiling, ink notes in a contemporary hand to verso of title and a few margins elsewhere, ink stamp to title verso, later calf, cracking to head of upper joint, light rubbing to extremities, [STC 12883], small 4to, John Wolfe, 1599.⁂ John Darrell (b.1562), curate at St. Mary's Church, Nottingham, was known for his Puritan views and gained notoriety for a series of high-profile exorcisms. Harsnett (1561-1631, later Archbishop of York) was appointed to investigate and found Darrell guilty of fraudulent exorcisms. Darrel was stripped of holy orders and imprisoned but released in 1599.Provenance: C. de Cardonel (ink inscription on title dated 1649); William Herbert (1718-95; his typical cypher on title); Sir Thomas Gage (1781-1820; ink inscription on title and stamp to verso).
Agriculture.- Estienne (Charles) and Jean Liébault. Maison Rustique, or the Countrie Farme... also a short collection of the hunting of the Hart, wilde Bore, Hare, Foxe, Gray, Conie; of Birds and Faulconrie..., translated by Richard Surflet, first edition in English, woodcut device on title, ornaments, initials and illustrations, some full-page, lacking Y8-Z1 (illustrations of knot gardens), title soiled, torn and restored, with loss to several words, several ff. at beginning and end with margins frayed and partly repaired, occasional worming, mostly marginal, some light soiling and dampstaining, ink inscription to pastedown, 20th century half calf, upper joint cracked, [STC 10547; Fussell I p.13], 4to, by Edm. Cornwall.- Carew (Richard) The Survey of Cornwall, first edition, title with woodcut printer's device, woodcut initials and headpieces, errata f., lacking initial blank f., 2G1 with small portion of restoration to lower margin, occasional light browning, last few ff. a little foxed, 19th century inscription to front free endpaper, 19th century straight-grain aubergine morocco, gilt, spine rubbed and faded, g.e., [STC 4615], small 4to, by S. S. for Iohn Iaggard, and are to bee sold neere Temple-barre, at the signe of the Hand and Starre, 1602.⁂ First edition of Carew's pioneering county history, which is "above all a representation of Cornwall as its author saw it, in terms of the landscape and climate, and of the occupations of men and women whose lives these shaped. Demonic possession.- Darrell (John) A Survey of Certaine Dialogical Discourses, written by John Deacon and John Walker, concerning the Doctrine of Possession and Dispossession of Divels, title closely shaved at head, touching first letter and a little stained and soiled, 1602 bound with The Replie ... to the Answer of John Deacon and John Walker, concerning the Dispossession of Demoniakes, 1602, together 2 works in 1 vol., titles with typographic decorations, some light dampstaining and occasional soiling, light worming, mostly marginal, closely shaved at head and foot with loss to headlines, signatures and catchwords, occasionally touching text, extensive ink notes in a contemporary hand to rear endpapers, contemporary calf, rebacked, [STC 6285; 6284], small 4to.⁂ A pair of scarce works on demonic possession and exorcism.
Witchcraft.- James I and VI (King of England and Scotland) Daemonologie, in Forme of a Dialogue, Divided into three books, title with woodcut decoration and woodcut arms to verso, woodcut initials and headpieces, closely shaved at head, affecting some headlines, light foxing, ink ownership inscription to title and ink stamps to verso, front free endpaper becoming loose, 19th century speckled calf, [STC 14366], small 4to, by Arnold Hatfield for Robert Wald-graue, 1603.⁂ First published in 1597, in Daemonologie James I attempted to refute a number of rationalist texts that had argued against the existence of witchcraft. The work was a source for Shakespeare in creating his witches in Macbeth. Provenance: British Library (ink stamps with deaccession stamp dated 1787); William Hone (1780-1842, writer and bookseller, his ink ownership inscription to title).
Italy.- Thomas (William) The Historye of Italye. A booke exceding profitable to be red: because it intreateth of the astate of many and dyuers common weales, how they haue bene, and now be governed, second edition, black letter, title within woodcut border, woodcut initials, lacking 2I2&3 and blank ff. A4 and T4, title a little browned, worming to first half, occasional light marginal soiling, 19th century calf, upper cover detached, lower joint starting, [ESTC 24019], in Fletestrete nere to Sainct Dunstons Church by Thomas Marshe, [1561].SRN: this lot is lacking 3I2&3, not 2I2&3.⁂ The first book in English devoted entirely to Italy, first published in 1549. Thomas was influential at the English court and was a clerk of the Privy Council under Edward VI. His strong protestant sympathies proved his undoing however and he lost many of his preferments at court following the Mary's accession. Thomas became openly treasonous towards the Queen, took an active part in the Wyatt conspiracy and attempted to flee to Wales. He was arrested however and executed at Tyburn in 1554, at which event the executioner also burned the first edition run of the present work.
