Selection of Fabric Taken from the Aircraft of the Famous German Flying Ace Baron Manfred von Richthofen “The Red Baron”, a 9.5 x 5.5 section of fabric from the crashed Fokker tri-plane of the famous ace Baron von Richtofen. His Fokker Dr-1 was originally painted in a light blue before being overpainted in the famous red. This section of fabric has at least 50% of the red still affixed and the blue base colour remains in areas also. The fabric piece is contained in a small envelope, which printed to the top reads “From Bishop Wordsworth School, Sailsbury” and in period script “Piece of Baron von Richthofen’s machine”. Fragments of the blue paint can be found within this envelope. Accompanying the fragment is a Technical Notes for the Royal Flying Corps publication, 1918 dated wireless report from a Lieutenant Baker RAF, a General Staff Intelligence summary of information sheet and a large brown envelope with postmark 1956 addressed to a Mr Happold in Salisbury, Wiltshire. We can only assume that a member of the Royal Flying Corps and later Royal Air Force, Lieutenant Baker acquired this fragment after the plundering of the Red Baron’s machine and gave it to his old school Bishop Wordsworth School, Salisbury.
