A collection of Staffordshire seated dogs, to include a white version with traditional embellishments and chain and separated front legs, 10in. (25.5cm.) high, together with four pairs of Staffordshire dogs of varying forms and sizes. and anothers. (11) * Condition: Light surface wear, no chips of major cracks found, overall good.
Thomas William Hammond (British, 1854-1935), 'The Casquets', pastel, laid onto board, signed lower right, modern hollow gilt frame15¼ x 29¼in. (38.75 x 74.25cm.).* Hammond is recorded as exhibiting 'The Casquets' at the RA in 1909, and this is presumed to be a preliminary sketch of the finished work. * Condition: The frame is not glazed, which has led to light surface dirt and a smudge to the pastel to the lower right corner. Would benefit from glazing to protect the surface. The two-piece sheet has a horizontal join approx. 2in. above the horizon and it does show due to surface dirt along the join. A faint horizontal indented line is visible approx. 2in. below the top margin.

London, Hamish Hamilton 1988, signed to the half title. (3) * Condition: - Orinoco Runs Away: Light wear to edges and corners. Light spine creasing. Crease to upper corner of signed fep and a few small spots to pages.- Island Railway: Lightly bumped. Spotting to page edges, final page and back end paper.- FDC: Very good condition.
Augustus Edwin John OM (Welsh, 1878-1961), Gypsy Caravan and Horse, etching on laid paper, signed in pencil lower right "John", inscribed on back of frame "Purchased by the Duchess of Leeds from Augustus John's studio sale after his death in 1963", framed, 5 X 6in. (12.7 X 15.2cm.).*Caroline Vatcher (Jersey, 1931-2005) became Duchess of Leeds upon her marriage to the Duke of Leeds in 1955. * Condition: Light toned. Acidic mount.
Edmund Blampied RE (Jersey 1886-1966), "Emile", drypoint etching, signed in red lower right, inscribed in pencil lower centre "Emile" and numbered in pencil lower left 33/35. Also signed in the plate. Edition of thirty-five published in 1958, framed 5 3/8 x 6in. (13.7 x 15.2cm.). * Condition: Light toning. Signature faded. Acidic mount.
Caledonian Railway interest - A exceptionally fine tooled leather-bound illuminated album, the cover with the gilt monogram 'JT', the title page inscribed "Presented to Sir James Thompson, Knight. General Manager of the Caledonian Railway Company. Accompanied by A Service of Plate. Glasgow 30th Septr. 1897", with presentation letter offering congratulations on his knighthood on the occasion of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the following two pages signed by numerous colleagues, the album enhanced by five finely executed watercolours of Scottish scenery, including views of Edinburgh Castle and Glasgow University, each page with finely illuminated borders with thistles, coronets and lion rampant roundels, each backed with watered ivory silk, protected in a modern solander slip case, 14¾ x 11in. (37.5 x 27.9cm.).* The album was presented the same year as Sir James was Knighted by Queen Victoria. He was by all accounts a highly esteemed and successful businessman who was hugely popular with his employees. The album is inscribed on the title page "Gilmour & Dean, Fecit, Glasgow". Gilmour & Dean produced maps for the Caledonian Railway Company. * Condition: In fine condition overall - exceptionally well preserved. Very light wear to the corners and edges of the binding, spine lightly sunned. The interior in fine, bright condition - just one small spot of toning to the top edge of the title page, no other spotting or toning.
Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910), Russian writer of War and Peace and Anna Karenina - two autograph letters, written to the Tolstoyist and religious activist John C. Kenworthy of 45 Willow Road, Hampstead, London, the first dated 29th June 1900, two pages, 8vo, with original envelope postmarked in Russia on 19th January and Maldon, Essex on 21st January, addressed to 'My Dear Kenworthy' and concerning Kenworthy's notice in the press that he was authorised to publish Tolstoy's works, "For fear this should lead to misunderstanding or undesirable complications, I write at once to remind you of what I said at Terigano, namely that I had already handed over all business matters connected with the publication of my works to Vladamir Tchertkhoff and therefore, though I was very pleased that such a series of publications as you suggested should be brought out under your auspices, yet such authority as I felt myself able to give could only be given subject to Tchertkhoff's approval. It follows that as far as I am concerned you have no authority to act in this matter without the full consent of Tchertkhoff. I hope you will come to a complete understanding with him. I am repeating the contents of this letter to Tchertkhoff....", the second dated 17th January 1902, one page, 8vo, written from the Crimea, thanking Kenworthy for his correspondence, stating, " ....I never forgot and never will the gladness that I felt in knowing you and your work, and the joy that I get from my communion with you. I can not help saying that I am sorry for the importance that you attach to spiritualism. Your true and pure Christian faith and life are much more reliable than all that the spirits can say to you.". (2) * Condition: - 1900: Each of the pages is split into two parts, along the central horizontal fold. Some light spotting and time staining. First page with small split to bottom of vertical fold. The envelope is also split into two parts (front and back), has marginal tears and minor losses. One part of flap missing.- 1902: Folded - small split to centre of folds. Horizontal split to horizontal fold on (blank) second page. Very light occasional spotting. Ink smudged to left of centre.

A few ink stains. Tear to 50% of fold on first folding map (Knightlow Hundred). One double page engraving re-backed. Some paper repairs to edges.

Attributed to Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich (German, 1712-1774), "Portrait of a Spanish Lady draped for the Carnival", oil on canvas, 18th century carved and gilded Carlo Maratta frame, 27 x 21½in. (68.6 x 54.6cm.).* Provenance: Typed label on reverse "Portrait of a Spanish Lady draped for the Carnival. Dietrich Christian. 1712-1744 (sic). Bought by Lord Colborne from R. Reinagh, 1820 for 40 guineas. Lent to the British Institution in 1829". * Condition: Canvas lined. 3/4 inch tear in the canvas through to the lining canvas upper left arm. Light surface dirt and uneven varnish.

Henry Bowser Wimbush (British, 1861-1943), "The headmaster's house & chapel......Harrow", watercolour, signed lower right, inscribed verso, original gilt dentil frame with gilt slip, 9¼ x 12in. (23.5 x 30.5cm.); together with another related watercolour by the same hand, "At the top of West St., Harrow", signed and dated (18)93 lower left, 6¾ x 8 5/8in. (17.1 x 21.9cm.), similarly framed. (2) * Condition: Both in original frames and apparently undisturbed. In good condition overall - the smaller has light toning and a patch of mottled darker toning to the lower centre sky. Both have thunderbugs between the slip and glass.
Studio of Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA, FRS (British, 1769-1830), Portrait of King George IV (1762-1830) in private dress, wearing the Garter Star and Order of the Golden Fleece, oil on panel bearing printed label for the colourman Robert Davy (c.1771-1843) of 16 Wardour Street, London who it states was "patronised by Sir Thomas Lawrence", 20th century frame, painted and gilded surmounted by a crown, each corner having a rosette,10¾ x 8¾in. (27.3 x 22.2cm.).* This is a reduced copy of Lawrence's original full-length portrait London, commissioned in 1822 and now in in the Wallace Collection, London. The original was given by George IV to his mistress Lady Conyngham and was considered by the King to be the most successful of several portraits that Lawrence painted of him. * Condition: Use of bitumen in dark areas, paint shrinkage, light surface dirt.
A pair of English Coalport tazzas, of shaped circular form with twin moulded handles, royal blue and white ground with reserves of floral decoration, highlighted in gilt, marked on the base ‘HC Stephenson Manchester’, 11 ½ in. (29.2cm.), high. (2) * Condition: No chips or cracks found, very light rubbing to gilt, good.
French School (second quarter 20th century), Street scenes with figures, Istanbul, Turkey, a pair, watercolour, signed and inscribed indistinctly to lower margin, one inscribed 'Istanbul Mai 1929' verso, later frames, 17 x 11in. (43.2 x 28cm.). (2) * Condition: Neither examined out of the frame. One in good condition, with single fox mark top left. The other slightly faded, with toning to sheet, a few fox marks and several light spots to the sheet around the top margin and one large patch lower in the sky, from earlier restoration.
Louis Van Staaten (Dutch, 1836-1909), Dutch harbour scenes, a pair, watercolour, both signed, modern painted frames, 15½ x 23¼in. (39.5 x 59cm.). (2) * Condition: Light toning to sheets and a little light foxing to both. Both have old mount contact lines at the margins of the sheets from old framing. Colours remain strong.

Also a label on the back of the canvas providing framing instructions specifically for pictures by John Bratby. * Condition: Unlined. Light surface dirt.

A good pair of large French gilt metal and glass ceiling lanterns, second half 20th century in the Regency style, the blown glass body with gilt cone finial, suspended from a gilt metal circlet decorated with masks, foliage and beaded swags connected by chains to a smoke shade, with four light fitment, 40in. (101.7cm.) high, 16¾in. (42.5cm.) diameter. (2) * Condition: Two light arms loose on mount - nuts to tighten inside the mount. No other faults - complete and no other faults.
A George III oval crossbanded mahogany occasional table with lidded top, the oval top opening to storage over a plain strung frieze, raised on slender tapering square legs with brass castors, 26 x 17¾in. (66 x 45cm.), 29½in. (74.9cm.) high. * Condition: Losses to crossbanding on top, also light surface scratches, two legs have been repaired where they join the carcass.
