Indian Post Office in Nepal-Incoming Mail: 1865 and 1869 two covers from London to Col R'd Lawrence (British resident in Kathmandu 1867-72) or his wife, former franked 1865-67 6d dull lilac plate 6 tied by London N duplex for JY 3 65, latter by 1867-80 9d straw tied by London SE duplex for FE 11 69, former endorsed 'Via Southampton and Bombay', with (on reverse) Bombay transit cds for AU 8 65 and bold but slightly smudged 'NEPAUL/P.O.' arrival cds, latter with (on reverse) fine oval 'SEA POST OFFICE' ds for 1-3 and light 'NEPAUL P.O' arrival cds for 18.4.69, adhesives with faults and latter large tear away from adhesive and opened out for display, scarce and collectable despite faults
1939-48 10s dark blue (SG 478), complete sheet of 40 with full margins, used by numerous London 'rubber' parcel cds and with what appears to by a part Australian arrival cds in left margin, R3/6 to R5/6 affected by vertical scissor cut, some light creasing and perf separation in places which has been reinforced with hinges, a very scarce multiple despite faults, accompanied by 1950 receipt from P L Pemberton who sold this item for £11.10s

1948-49 Royal Silver Wedding, apparently complete (not guaranteed) both mint (hinged) and used in album, a few additional used high vals incl Gibraltar, Pitcairn Islands and KUT, the mint Kuwait 15r on £1 showing short bars var (this fine u/m), many with light perf toning but some fine, the mint HK$10 is u/m but a couple of toned perfs, cat £4,750+
1935 Jubilee 2½d Prussian blue (SG 456a), used by light part cds at lower right, a couple of ink stains at upper left, also a few lightly toned perfs and colour shows some evidence of exposure to moisture, BPA Cert (1952) which mentions ink stains but not minor imperfections, a good 'spacefiller' of this rare and popular stamp, cat £15,000
Postcards: An outstanding collection of over 800 early 20th century Irish postcards, written up for display in three volumes and three further stock books containing the balance, all collected over 35 years. Richard Karlovich Zommer (Russian 1866-1939) At the door to the mosque Signed Oil on canvas 58 x 86cm; 23 x 34in Provenance: Captain Henry Herbert Douglas-Withers, purchased from artist in Tbilisi in 1915/16 By family descent to the present owner Captain Douglas-Withers fought in the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915/16 with the Prince of Wales Volunteers (South Lancashire Regiment) and was awarded the Military Cross for exemplary gallantry. After the campaign he was part of a small British force that was sent stabilise Tbilisi, as many White Russians were there, fleeing the Red Army. Richard Zommer was teaching in Tbilisi and sold his paintings locally. Captain Douglas-Withers purchased a number of his pictures including lots 471, 472 and 473 and stored them in Army Map containers for transport home. Born in Munich, Zommer went to St Petersburg in 1884 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, winning several awards for his work. In the 1890s he travelled extensively in Asia and developed his style, renowned for being true to life and for his vibrant depiction of light. In the early 1900s he moved to Georgia and worked in the Caucasus Mountains providing an invaluable record of life in this remote territory at this time. He taught many Georgian painters but the artist Lado Gudiashvili was perhaps the one who he influenced the most. Between 1916 and 1920 he exhibited in Tbilisi and it was at this time that these three works were purchased. In 1939 the Stalin regime forced him to leave Georgia and no record of him has been found after this. It is likely that he was interned in Siberia as this was the fate that befell ethnic Germans at this time.
