Follower of Giovanni Antonio Canal, called Canaletto (Italian 1697-1768)/View of the Grand Canal, Venice/The Bucintoro returning to the Molo on Ascension Day/oil on canvas, 73.75cm x 125.75cm/Note: this painting has traditionally been attributed to the British painter William James (active 1730-1780), who was one of Canaletto's studio assistants on his 1754 trip to England. The paintings he produced in his master's style found a ready market among wealthy clients on the Grand Tour. It is one of several very similar versions which have appeared at auction, notably at Christie's New York on 15th April 2008 and, most recently, at Hampel in Munich on 2nd April 2020; both were catalogued as being by William James. The composition is based on a Canaletto originally owned by Sir Robert Walpole, the first Prime Minister of Great Britain, and recorded as hanging at 10 Downing Street in 1736/Provenance: Christie's, Pictures by Old Masters, 19th May 1967, Lot 55 (catalogued as Canaletto)/see illustration CONDITION REPORT: This painting has been in a British private collection for many years and was last offered in Christie's 'Pictures by Old Masters' sale on 19th May 1967, Lot 55 (catalogued as Canaletto). The picture total measurement is 76cm x 128cm. The frame total size is 90cm x 141cm.The painting has been re-lined and the reverse of the canvas has several water marks of various sizes, the upper part of the frame also has water marking to the back of the top rail. The client tells me they had a water leak some years ago which is the cause of this. The frame has some small losses to the slip and also has a label inscribed 'William James 1721-1771'. The canvas appears sound and flat, there is discoloured varnish most visible to the sky left of centre. I cannot see any obvious sign of serious overpainting or damage under UV light. Flaking to paint lower left edge but this is to an area hidden under the rebate of the frame. Some very minor scratches to paint surface visible under close examination.
