Some light creasing, age wear and minor staining, and a few traces of former mounting to the verso, about G The present note, an emergency paper money also known as Siege of Khartoum currency, was issued between April and November 1884. Gordon’s currency, essentially promissory in nature, was personally guaranteed with the backing of the Egyptian government. Initially £2500 was issued in notes of various denominations and, accepted by both merchants and sailors, the notes initially provided economic relief and trade stimulus. Around half of the notes were personally signed by Gordon, the others bearing a facsimile signature which merchants were reluctant to accept. Had the currency not been introduced by Gordon the defence of Khartoum would have collapsed much earlier, however after the city was stormed and captured by the Ansar the notes were publicly burnt or left discarded in the streets for cattle to consume. Possession of the notes was subject to an unpleasant punishment, nevertheless some made their way across the desert in the following months hidden in clothing or bags of grain, completely at risk to their owner’s lives.

Some light staining and age wear, only very slightly affecting a few letters of text, but not the signature, and with a very neat split to the central horizontal fold, neatly repaired to the verso and barely noticeable. A couple of smaller, neat splits at the edges of a few other folds. About VG Curiously, the integral leaf is annotated 'Captain Brisbane, the late Admiral Brisbane' in a contemporary, although unidentified hand. Given the date of the letter, the recipient could not have been Sir James Brisbane, the British Naval Captain who served under Horatio Nelson and was born in 1774, or his cousin Sir Thomas Brisbane, the British Major General who served under the Duke of Wellington, who was born a year earlier in 1773.

St. Vincent informs his correspondent, 'I write to Mr Anson by this post desiring to have the refusal of Hilcot - agreeing with you entirely, that if Edward has not occupation he will be restless & unhappy - I will purchase anything you like as an equivalent for Meaford which on every account, one wishes, should be attached to the Title' adding the postscript, 'I am morally certain of bringing Mr Thos. The residence at the time of the correspondence belonged, no doubt through his inheritance, to his brother, William Jervis. St. Vincent wished to acquire the hall so that it would become part of his Title, 'Earl St. Vincent, Baron Jervis of Meaford'. A task in which he succeeded. St. Vincent had been MP for Yarmouth before he received his peerage in 1779. The postscript most likely refers to his intention to influence the securing of a seat for Thomas Jervis. If so he was unsuccessful.

Schulz was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross whilst a Major and Commander of I./Kampfgeschwader 76 on 16th August 1940, as confirmed by the present document, and, as Generalmajor and Commander of a Kampfgruppe in the Luftkriegsschule he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves on 19th February 1945.
