The Roly-Poly Pudding, 1st ed., 1908, col. and b & w illusts., finger-soiled throughout and some light foxing, stitching sl. strained, pictorial endpapers, orig. bevel-edged maroon boards with inset square pictorial panel to upper cover, dust-soiled, extrems. v. sl. rubbed, 4to Inscribed by the author on the frontispiece verso: 'For John Taylor and Mrs Taylor with kind regards from Miss Potter Dec 11th 08'. John Taylor was the Sawrey joiner and wheelwright. His wife, and later their daughter, kept the village shop, which was immortalized in 'Ginger and Pickles'. Their son, John, appeared as John Joiner, the terrier in 'The Roly-Poly Pudding'. Old John professed to be jealous of the fact, and Beatrix Potter good-humouredly remonstrated with him, asking how she could include him in one of her books since he was bed-bound. A week later she received a piece of paper from him saying, 'John Taylor's compliments and thinks he might pass for a dormouse'. The following year Old John became Mr. John Dormouse in 'Ginger and Pickles', and Beatrix Potter dedicated the book to her old friend: 'Dedicated with very kind regards to old Mr. John Taylor, who "thinks he might pass as a Dormouse;" (three years in bed and never a grumble!)'. Sadly, Old John didn't live to see the book in print. (1)
