The dispute continued on and off for half a century, culminating in the Venezuela Crisis of 1895, in which Venezuela sought to use the United States' Monroe Doctrine to win support for its position. B. V. Head, marked Copy at the head. Joyce announces 'It may be customary in Capital cases to take the thanks of one's client for granted, provided that he is sane; but I feel that, before the Appeal judgment in this case is delivered, I must attempt to express, however imperfectly, my deep and sincere gratitude towards my legal representatives' and continues 'May I, then, thank you and Counsel for the splendid fight that you have been waging throughout? I know how hard you have worked and realize with grateful appreciation the debt which I owe to your efforts, to the acumen, learning and keen analytical sense of Mr. Curtis-Bennett, and the bold but painstaking ability of Mr. Burge, whose contribution on jurisdiction has now assumed such importance. Where words fail me, however, is in the search for some appropriate terms in which to convey my respectful admiration for Mr. Slade….He has shown that, in this country, an accused person, however unpopular, can find a real champion, all political views set aside.' Joyce also remarks 'So far as I can see, certain issues of the most far-reaching importance have been raised in this case, affecting something much more important than the fate of William Joyce - the question of “Law or No Law” - the problem as to whether the whole current of British justice is to be turned away by that Old Testamentary lust for “retribution” which may be natural at the moment, but which is alien to the purely British character.' The fascist concludes 'I am fully prepared for an adverse decision, as for the adverse consequences of a favourable decision. The fight may be long and it will be certainly be tough. But I have the fullest confidence in the gentlemen who are with me and I know that they will do what is humanly possible on my behalf. And, should all efforts prove unavailing, I shall be glad and comforted to take with me the impression of dauntless men, worthy of the England that, at some time in the past, I used to know.' The two pages are stapled together in the upper left corner. Some light creasing, otherwise VG Joyce was captured in Germany at the end of World War II and taken to London where he was tried at the Old Bailey on three counts of High Treason.
