"Paddy Ashdown" picture : some light general wear, appears to be a small correction to left of the signature. Size of Paddy Ashdown image approx 21.5 x 14cm, Flying pig image size approx 16 x 22.5cm. These are original pen and ink cartoons.

WILLIAM THORNLEY (1857-1898) "Harbour scene in moonlight with figures in row boats", oil on board, signed bottom left, 19 cm x 24 cm CONDITION REPORTS The picture has general wear and tear, and is perhaps dirty in places. There are some minor scratches to the paint, and the craquelure has possibly been stabilized / repaired. The frame has some minor chips and scratched to it. Under UV light, there was a white / yellow coloured streak to the top left hand corner. There are some dark coloured patches. Overall there is a cloudy appearance.

GEORGE VICAT COLE (1833-1892) "Cattle watering in a river landscape with barge in background", oil on canvas, signed bottom right, 30.5 cm x 55.5 cm CONDITION REPORTS Outer frame appears to be relatively new, older stretcher and inner frame are rather wobbly (not securely fitted) within the frame. Painting generally appears to have been re-varnished and there are some irregularities to the surface. Under ultra-violet light : overall appears to have had various areas of restoration and touch-up paint, particularly visible to the sky, and a fairly large vertical area to the sky - possibly a repair.

Under natural light picture appears to have been re-varnished as overall surface is quite shiny. Under ultra-violet light : a few small areas show up darker so appears to have had a small amount of restoration. Painting generally overall with some wear, scuffs and dirt. Picture believed to be from a deceased estate. The only initials / letters that are clear are F and G, although there appears to be further lettering but we cannot be certain, it is not clear. The background here is very dark as is the lettering, making it unclear.

FREDERICK GOLDEN SHORT (1863-1936) "New Forest", an open landscape, oil on canvas board, signed and dated 1912 bottom left, 25 cm x 34.5 cm CONDITION REPORTS Under natural light painting appears to have been re-varnished and has quite a shiny surface, has various irregularities to surface. Board appears to have warped slightly. Housed in a modern frame with a modern MDF type backing board. Under ultra-violet light the whole of the picture surface shows up quite a milky white, and with areas of craqueleur showing up as a brighter bluish colour. Picture believed to be from a deceased estate. The first photo is taken with studio lighting which does not reflect off the very shiny surface of the varnish. The other pictures were taken a few days later with a flash and show the very shiny surface of the varnish.

ARTHUR JOHN FOSTER (Exhib. 1880-1905) "French fleet off Exmouth", a coastal landscape, oil on canvas, monogrammed bottom left, inscribed and dated 1904 verso, 46 cm x 35 cm CONDITION REPORTS Frame is quite modern, synthetic and lightweight, and with some chips. Painting is quite extensively restored - with restoration to most of the sky, plus a vertical band of restoration from top of picture slightly left of centre, extending down most of its length. Pin holes and restoration to top corners. Restoration shows up very clearly under UV light, but under natural light is very hard to see and colours have been well matched, the main evidence under natural light / with the naked eye is the slightly smoother texture of the restored areas. Canvas appears to have been re-stretched.

WILLIAM MELLOR (1851-1931) "On the Dee, Llangollen, North Wales", river landscape with cattle watering, oil on canvas, signed bottom left, titled verso, 51 cm x 76 cm CONDITION REPORTS Some light general wear and dirt and a few small splashes of dirt. Under UV light the specks of dirt show up dark in colour, however, there does not appear to be any signs of restoration. Overall condition appears to be reasonably good.

SOUTH AFRICAN SCHOOL "Water buck", a study, oil on board, signed indistinctly bottom right, 60 cm x 80 cm CONDITION REPORTS Overall with general wear, scuffs and dirt, some marks and blemishes, there is a chequered grid which is showing through the paint, particularly visible to the edges and to the left half of the picture, housed in a modern frame with an MDF type board backing. Under ultra-violet light : a few specks and finger type marks visible, but no obvious signs of restoration. Under natural light : various blobs and irregular areas of paint, various sketch lines visible near the antlers, and some sketch lines beneath the paint visible where the animals' body would have been.

Frame with some wear and scuffs, and some slight craqueleur to the gilt decoration.

19TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL "Interior tavern scene", oil on panel, unsigned, indistinctly inscribed on old label verso, 31 cm x 25 cm CONDITION REPORTS Frame with various splits, cracks and chips, and some losses to decoration, some re-painting. Under natural light : picture itself has various wear and scuffs, and in some areas the varnish appears more shiny than others, with the section across the top beam being more matt looking, various blemishes and deposits to surface of paint/varnish. Under ultra-violet light : whole of the painting has a very milky white finish, suggesting re-varnishing, with a few areas which appear slightly darker such as hair and collar of gentleman on the right, suggesting some areas of touch-up paint/restoration.

19TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL "Naive portrait of a farmer wearing top hat with pitchfork in his left hand", oil on panel, 14 cm x 11 cm CONDITION REPORTS Painting overall with fairly dull finish, quite a few scrapes and scratches where the paint has been scraped away, some craqueleur, some undulations to the surface, there is a gilt painted band down the right-hand side of the painted panel and slightly paler line to the left of that. Under ultra-violet light : large area of the farmer's smock shows up very black indicating areas of restoration, there is also a series of scratches across the leg area which are very indistinct and may be an inscription of some kind, some dark marks also show up across the bottom section of the picture and to the pitch fork. Frame has a faux rosewood stained effect, and has various chips and losses.

EARLY 19TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL "Portrait of a portly gentleman seated at a writing table with quills and an inkwell", oil on canvas, indistinctly signed and dated 1821 bottom left, 22 cm x 18 cm CONDITION REPORTS Quite a lot of craqueleur to the paint throughout, and some scuffs and scratches, canvas has been re-lined and appears to have been glued on to a new stretcher. Under ultra-violet light there are quite a few black patches indicating restoration particularly to the background to his right shoulder, to the right edge of his coat, to his left arm and to his hair above his ear.

Frame with various cracks, chips and losses. Under ultra-violet light : picture generally has quite an even and slightly milky appearance, no obvious signs of restoration.

19TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL "Mrs Marigny", portrait of a young lady wearing a black dress and holding a locket in her right hand, half length, oil on canvas, unsigned, 76 cm x 82 cm CONDITION REPORTS Frame has various chips, knocks and scuffs, and appears originally to have been gilt and has been painted cream. Painting itself has various wear, scuffs and dirt, some small chips and flakes to the paint. Under ultra-violet light : there are some areas that show up dark indicating restoration including smallish patches to the hair, tiny dot to the lip, quite a few areas to the dress, quite a few areas to the background to the left side, quite a few areas bottom left corner, and a few small areas to her neck.

18TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL "Portrait study of a grey-haired gentleman, his right hand tucked into his jacket", a portrait, half length, oil on canvas, inscribed on reverse "Richard Roberts 1744", 73 cm x 61 cm CONDITION REPORTS All over craquelure and crazing along with general wear and tear. There are some small scuffs and scratches throughout. The picture appears dirty in places. There are white paint marks above the cuff, although this appears to be the same colour of the cuff. There are small splatters of white coloured paint throughout the picture. There is a scratch to the upper right hand corner of the picture. Under UV light there are dark patches to the face and forehead, and to the right hand side of the picture. There are some other smaller areas of dark patches. Overall the picture under UV light has a cloudy appearance. Frame is dirty in places with general wear and tear.

17TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL "Bearded gentleman wearing a ruff and holding gloves in his right hand", oil on canvas, unsigned, inscribed "Aetatis suce 52" and dated "1609", 74 cm x 62 cm CONDITION REPORTS Canvas has been re-lined, appears to be in fairly modern frame, craqueleur throughout the painting which appears to have been re-varnished. Under ultra-violet light : painting has an extremely milky appearance and appears generally to have had some restoration and stabilising of cracked paint and re-varnishing.
