BISHOPSGATE VOLUNTEERS COATEE, BREECHES AND HOSE, 1798-1801. The dress coatee is of scarlet cloth with navy blue facings and edged all round with narrow white piping, there are 'wing' epaulettes trimmed with a silver wire fringe, presumably indicating that the volunteer was in the Grenadier or Light Company. The round cuffs fasten via cloth covered buttons one red one blue, thirty-nine plated buttons are present out of forty. These are all flat, open back, marked, 'I. Fearn' 'Lombard St.' 18mm. The design is incised showing the crown over script capitals, 'BV'. The quite coarse off-white lining (with waxed linen pocket lining) is complete and original. The coatee's lapels don't 'work' so it must be assumed this was his 'best parade' garment. The off-white woollen breeches have a 'fall-front', this and the short fly decorated with flat, open back, plain plated buttons (unmarked). Two similar buttons at the rear, one broken. Cloth covered buttons at the knees. Original lining throughout. The hose, certainly of the period are of fine manufacture, are full length, so would have required garter fasteners, the size of the foot 24.5cm most probably indicates a gentleman user. Each stocking has white finely sewn initials at the top, one, 'O A coronet?' the other 'D J coronet?'. Some simple flocking to the lower areas, the coatee with some small mothed areas and some surface mothing, the lining with minor holes, one cuff restitched (poorly) at some time. The breeches with damage to the rear waist area and a few minor sewn repairs, some surface mothing, the hose in good condition. (3) NOTE. The Bishopsgate Volunteers were raised 1st May 1798 under Alderman Sir Richard Glynn and comprised two companies. The executive commanders were Majors William Lennox and Robert Wigram. The corps received its Colours 18th October 1798 in the East India Company's Drill Ground. See Rowlandson, 'Loyal Volunteers of London & Environs', Plate number 25. The unit was not reformed in 1803 but most of the officers and men formed part of the 6th Battalion, The Loyal London Regiment, Wigram being appointed Lieutenant Colonel Commandant. Eleven such regiments were formed. The address on the buttons for I. Fearn is correct for the period.

GEORGIAN PERIOD, THE HON. EAST INDIA COMPANY CIVILIAN OFFICIAL'S FULL DRESS UNIFORM c.1822-1829, comprising a bicorne hat, coatee and knee length breeches, three very fine and rare items. The hat of stiffened black fabric is decorated at either end with blackened silver lace fringes, the front bears a single chevron of patterned gold lace 15mm in depth, with a small retaining gilt button at the point, open back, convex, bearing the HEIC Lion (12mm). The hat has the original waxed black linen lining. The coatee in navy blue cloth has a 'stand-up' collar (8.3cm) and double breasted 'cuirass' front in black velvet. The cuffs with a chevron front pattern are again in black velvet. The front, cuffs and skirt pocket areas are complete with single black cord 'lace' and gilt metal buttons, all are flat, open back and bear the HEIC Lion within an oval cartouches so can be dated therefore as no earlier than 1812, the large ones are 20mm and the small 15mm. The back mark on the large ones examined is 'Treble Gilt Standard Colour'. The complete white cloth and silk lining is quilted in areas. The light weight woollen knee length breeches with a 'fall-front' though undoubtedly of the period are not a true match to the hat and coatee, in that the pattern on all the buttons is different, being that of the (HEIC) Bengal Pilot Service. The Lion is placed on an heraldic 'red' shield and the whole on an heraldic 'gold' ground. The buttons are near flat open back, have a burnished rim and are again marked, 'Treble Gilt Standard Colour'. (three large, three small 20 & 14mm) . At the knee there are four small linen covered buttons, a linen tightening strap and provision for a button, now lacking, the gold lace chevron on the hat is dull otherwise in remarkably good condition, the coatee has some splitting to the velvet collar and some small mothed areas, the lining in good overall condition other than some slight staining, the breeches with poorly repaired small tears mainly in the crutch area, otherwise, again in good condition. (3) NOTE. A label states that this an HEIC' s marine officer's uniform, however known portraits of such officers indicate that their coatees bore gold lace decoration in varying degrees dependant on rank, also black velvet facings would not have worn well on the long sea voyages. There are sundry portraits of HEIC officials on embassies to the native princes accompanied by their military counterparts wearing uniforms such as the one described above.
A BRITISH INFANTRY OFFICER'S 1829 PATTERN FULL DRESS COATEE. The coatee of standard format has red facings (33rd 53rd & 76th Regiments only), it is devoid of all buttons, the gold lace collar, cuff and skirt panels severely tarnished, the quilted lining distressed, the sewn holes on the shoulders indicate that the garment was originally fitted with a Light or Grenadier Company officer's 'wing' epaulettes, the skirt panels and quilted lining part detached, £100-150.

The first red with gold lace decoration and plain ball buttons, the second light blue with a plum blue collar, silver lace and plain white metal buttons, the third white with gold lace and plain buttons, the first two in reasonable condition, the third distressed (3).
