‘The Old Inseparables, 3rd Test To-day’. Australian tour of England 1948. Large and impressive original pen and ink caricature/ cartoon newspaper artwork, highlighted with colour, for ‘The Herald’, Australian newspaper by artist Samuel Wells. The cartoon depicts an excellent image relating to the the build up to the 3rd Test, to be played at Manchester in July 1948, power shortages were affecting both England and Australia, post war. The cartoon depicts two Australian batsman (Sidney Barnes and Arthur Morris, the 1948 tour opening batsman??) walking out to bat, one depicted as ‘Coal Shortages’ with coal coloured face and arms and the other as ‘Power Shortages’ with a light bulb nose. The crowd in the background appear to be cold and miserable ‘Boo Hoo’. The cartoon, signed by Wells, measures 20”x13.5”. Dated to verso, 8th July 1948. Excellent image. G

‘The Cricketers of Vanity Fair’. Excellent complete collection of sixty nine original colour lithographs of cricketers, the first forty seven as listed by John Arlott and the second twenty two as listed by J.W. Goldman, both in 1953 and published in Russell March’s book, ‘The Cricketers of Vanity Fair’. The images, from the first list are Grace, Spofforth, Lord Harris, Bonnor, A.Lyttelton, Read, Philipson, Hornby, Stoddart, Woods, Lord Hawke, Fry, Baldwin, 6th Earl of Dartmouth, Viscount Curzon, Mitchel, Clarke, McLean, Ranjitsinhji, Wynyard, E. Lyttelton, Jessop, N.G. Some faults noted, minor staining to border of the images of Woods, Mitchell, Baldwin, Lucas, Bonnor, Hornby, Stoddart, Marsham and Ponsonby-Fane, wrinkling and light fading to Hobbs, age toning to Fry, small tear/damage to Spencer-Lyttleton, irregular trimming of borders to the Dartmouth lithograph, a few odd minor faults including wrinkling to the odd image otherwise in good condition. ZANUCK DARRYL F.: (1902-1979) American Film Producer and Studio Executive, Academy Award winner. A good series of ten T.Ls.S., Daddy, twenty pages (total), 4to, various places, 29th January 1968 - 13th January 1971, all to his daughter Darrylin Zanuck Pineda in Mexico, and each on the printed stationery of 20th Century Fox. Zanuck writes an interesting series of letters discussing a wide variety of subjects and personal matters including the preparation of her Will under Mexican law, his travel and work schedule, the Olympic Games in Mexico, his family and his views on how his daughter should raise her children, business difficulties with his son, Richard etc., in part, 'I leave a couple of days thereafter on an extended trip….including three days in Normandy to revisit for a television Special dealing with how Normandy looks today as compared with how it looked in "The Longest Day" ' (23rd July 1968), 'I received a letter from Oscar who says he is my grandchild. I don't remember any grandchild by the name of Oscar; but I am sure he is a child whom you have adopted so I am enclosing this check for him [no longer present] which you can give to him with my love.' (5th March 1969), 'I read with shock your letter to Dick concerning the tragedy that almost occurred in your effort to save the drowning woman. It frightened the hell out of me. I understand your bravery, but what I cannot understand is why a hotel like the Hilton would not have a professional Lifeguard on duty at all times, and why some of the other spectators did not come to the rescue until both you and the woman were half drowned. It sounds like a Salvador Dali nightmare.' (29th September 1969), 'Unless you take firm steps to get him [Robert, her son] into a real disciplinary school in Mexico City he is going to end up regrettably in some sort of serious trouble or he will end up in Tijuana playing with his combo in one of those marijuana or LSD joints.' Ernest Leslie McCormick. Victoria & Australia 1929-1939. Original printed invitation to Ernest McCormick to a Luncheon ‘To wish ‘Bon Voyage to the Eighteenth Australian Cricket Team, prior to departure to England. The President (Can E.S. Hughes) and the members of the Victoria Cricket Association request the pleasure of Mr E.L. McCormick at a Luncheon...’. The Luncheon was held at the Hotel Alexander, Spencer Street, Melbourne on the 9th March 1934. The card signed by McCormick and fellow tour party players, Stork Hendry and Arthur Chipperfield. Albert Craig. ‘First match between Surrey and Notts. At the Oval, July 17th and 18th, 1851. (1891). Broadsheet poem, the scorecard for the first Surrey v Nottinghamshire match is reproduced and is followed by a short poem by Craig.’Agin we expect a sharp, spirited game, A merry tough, stout-hearted fray....’ Presumably produced for the fortieth anniversary in 1891. Haygarth’s Collection of Scores and Biographies from 1772’ and return to him. ‘It is intended not only to give the full scores of important matches since that time, but also to insert the biography of every player of note (including Gentlemen) engaged in important matches. This circular was filled out in ink by Sutherland Law, an Amateur who played seven first class matches mainly for Gentlemen of Philadelphia between 1880-1891. His first match was for ‘22 of Philadelphia’ v Graces team 1872 and his first match played at Lord’s was for Gentlemen of Philadelphia v M.C.C. in 1884.
