An unusual wood cased Signal Box Telephone with bakelite handset in top cradle. The front has a rotary count-down switch used for calling, a blue light with a brass surround engraved ENGAGED and a typed location display showing UP STARTING TO QUARRY GAP BOX. Believed to be from the Laisterdyke area, quite possibly Laisterdyke Signal Box. Stands 14in tall x 6.5in x 6.5in. Extremely good condition.

Sir Robert Hamilton Bruce Lockhart Books Sir Robert Hamilton Bruce Lockhart (1887-1970), British diplomat, journalist, author, and secret agent, was born at Anstruther on 2 Sep 1887, son of Robert Bruce Lockhart of Waid Academy At age 21 he went out to Malaya to join his 2 uncles who were rubber planters there. Having successfully passed the examination for the British Secret Service, he was posted to Moscow in 1912, and was acting Consul-General in Moscow for much od the 1st World War from 1914 to 1917. He was present when the Feb Revolution took place early in 1917, but left shortly before the Bolshevik Revolution of Oct 1917. In Jan 1918 at the bequest of the British Prime Minister, David Lloyd George, he returned to Russia as the UK’s first envoy to Bolshevik Russia. In 1918, with the British agent, Sydney Reilly, they were both alleged to have plotted to assassinate Vladimir Lenin, and were both sentenced to be shot, but boys escaped execution and escaped. Lockhart wrote about his experiences in Malaya and Russia in his autobiography, Memoirs of a British Agent published in 1932, which became an international best seller, and whose chapters on Russia and the Russian Revolution were turned into a Warners Film, B British Agent in 1934. A second volume of autobiography, Retreat from Glory, was published. In 1934. In the 1930s he began to release number of books, which were successful enough to allow him to to take up writing as a full-time career. A mixed woods Mercury stick Barometer with light and dark-wood rope-style strung decoration and engraved "Bulgarani Fecit" and having a small glazed door giving access to the thermometer and the adjustable vernier type scale pressure-reader slide and having an architectural design pediment with a turned brass central finial. 38 1/2" high overall.
A light and darkwood strung Mahogany cased eight day Longcase Clock having a painted face with to the arch a pastoral scene with a young lady feeding corn to a hen and cockerel with chicks with a valley and a church with a spire in the distance, the face having Roman numerals inset second hand and semi-circular date register, the name Josh Taylor W-Hampton and colourfully painted stylised flowers to the corners, the case has twist details, an elaborately shaped door, the hood having a swan-neck pediment and spherical finials, the centre being surmounted by a bird, 88'' high x 22'' wide x 9 1/2'' deep approx. (ran briefly at the time of cataloguing, winder present).
