A GEORGE III BRASS MOUNTED MAHOGANY TABLE CLOCK WITH TRIP-HOUR REPEATINSCRIBED FOR BROCKBANKS, LONDON, CIRCA 1790The five pillar twin chain fusee bell striking movement with verge escapement regulated by short bob pendulum with holdfast hook to the geometric border-engraved shouldered backplate applied with a shaped plate engraved Brockbanks, LONDON to centre, the 7 inch break-arch cream painted Roman numeral dial further inscribed Brockbanks, LONDON to centre and with gilt brass spade hands beneath subsidiary STRIKE/SILENT selection dial to arch, the case with cushion-capped domed caddy superstructure flanked by gilt brass vase finials over double cavetto top mouldings, the rectangular front door with brass fillet moulding around the glazed dial aperture and scroll cast upper quadrant frets flanked by reeded canted angles, the sides with hinged gilt brass carrying handles over brass break-arch fish scale sound frets, the rear with break-arch glazed door set within the frame of the case, on cavetto moulded skirt base with brass ogee bracket feet.47cm (18.5ins) high, 33cm (13ins) wide, 20.5cm (8ins) deep. Provenance:Purchased by the vendor from Dukes, Dorchester sale of Silver, Jewellery and Furniture Thursday 9th April 1998 (lot 838) for £2,800 hammer.Condition Report: The movement is in good original working condition with no visible evidence of alteration or noticeable replacements. The mechanism is a little dirty/discoloured so a gentle clean/service may be advisable. The Brockbanks signature is engraved to a separate plate which is screwed to the backplate, as this could be an addition we cannot offer any assurances that the present clock is by Brockbankes. The dial appears to have been refinished and is in good condition with visible faults limited to very light edge chipping to the left-hand winding hole. Again, as the dial has been refinished, we cannot offer any assurances that it was originally signed for Brockbanks. The case is generally in good presentable condition. The superstructure probably has a concave section applied to the top of the dome hence the present cushion-shaped pad is probably a replacement. The veneers to the caddy exhibit some movement and the finials are probably later additions. Each of the side apertures has a small veneer patch repair to the edge overlap otherwise faults to the case are very much limited to minor shrinkage and a few very minor age related bumps, scuffs and other blemishes.Clock has a crank winder and a case key. Condition Report Disclaimer
