A sapphire and diamond bar brooch, circa 1920, the central circular-cut sapphire set between graduating calibré-cut sapphires, the tapering design bordered throughout with old brilliant-cut diamonds, mounted in platinum, total diamond weight approximately 1.70 carats, unmarked, with Cartier case, length 6.2cm. £2,400-£3,000 --- Provenance: Formerly the property of Kate (Kitty) Nelke, Countess Kate Apponyi (1893-1977), wife of Count Anton Apponyi (1883-1954) and thence by direct family descent. According to a verbal report from GCS, the principal sapphire has no indications of heating. Report No: 5783-3291. Condition Report The brooch is in very good condition, two very light surface scratches to the central principal sapphire, very good transparency, minimal wear to remaining sapphires, all of well matched rich mid blue hue. Diamonds lively, good scintillation, well matched. A couple of spot repairs evident to gallery, indistinct. Gross weight 8.1gm. Cartier case very worn. Sapphire measures apprimately 7.8 x 7.7 x 5.3mm.

A late 19th century gem-set brooch, French, the openwork quatrefoil set with a central natural pearl, measuring approximately 8.7 x 8.6 x 9.0mm, the surround set with alternating square-shaped emeralds and old brilliant-cut diamonds, with oval-cut rubies to the cardinal points and diamond-set scrolls between, mounted in silver and gold, French assay marks, partial maker’s mark, fitted leather case with embossed initials ‘D.I.’, diameter 35mm. £3,000-£5,000 --- Provenance: This brooch originally belonged to Baroness Dolorès Issaverdens, née Torres Caicedo. Born in Argentina in 1881, the Baroness married Baron Eugène Issaverdens (1874-1928) in Paris in 1900. She lived in France until the end of her life and died in Port-Marly in 1967. Thence by family descent. Condition Report Pearl off round with some wrinkling and blemishes/spots and light scratches. Off-white hue with silver overtones, soft lustre. Pearl drilled and attached to T-bar style fitting. Pearl moves/rotates as allowed by style of setting. Diamonds bright and lively. Emeralds well matched and with very good transparency. One with chip evident under close inspection. Rubies reddish-pink with bluish sub-hue, well matched and with good transparency, some typical inclusions evident under close inspection. One with surface reaching flaw with small loss here. Reverse with a couple of spot solder repairs. Clasp secure. Light wear to metal, overall good condition.
