Torch (1908 1990) British pianist, cinema organist, conductor, orchestral arranger and composer of light music. Before World War Two Torch (born Sidney Torchinsky) played church and theatre organs in a number of well-known venues and he joined the Royal Air Force in 1940. While he was in the air force, he became the Conductor of The RAF Concert Orchestra, after the war he conducted the BBC Concert Orchestra and created the BBC Light Programme show Friday Night is Music Night in 1953 which continues to be broadcast to this day making it the world's longest running live orchestral music radio programme.
