Attributed to Charles Robert Ashbee, a Guild of Handicraft yellow metal pearl set enamel necklace in original fitted case, circa 1895, comprising a double row of trace link chain with push-in box snap, spaced with 8 graduating quatrefoil panels each as a stylised flower head enamelled in deep blue and set to the centre with a single baroque pearl in an enclosed claw setting, supporting a dropper section to match, nominally rectangular shaped similarly set with a single pearl and suspended from two short lengths of chain, this in turn supports a single pearl dropper, unmarked and unsignedCondition: In very good condition, noting one samll chip to the enamel on the right hand side (as you look at it) of the suspended pendant, the other light areas in the images are reflection. Literature: C R Ashbee: Architect, Designer & Romantic Socialist, Alan Crawford, publ Yale University Press, 1985, page 353, plate 177 Other Notes: Charles Robert Ashbee (1863-1942) founded the Guild and School of Handicraft in 1888. The Guild, operating as a co-operative, produced leather, furniture, silver and metalwork, jewellery and books - much of the work based on Ashbee's designs. The revival of traditional techniques, education of working people and encouraging satisfaction through work were key principles of the Arts and Craft movement and the Guild. In 1902, the Guild (150 people, the Guildsmen and their families) moved from East London to Chipping Campden. Ashbee believed that living a simple, collective life in rural surroundings would add to the health and well-being of the craftsmen and consequently, the work they produced. Although the work of the Guild was widely exhibited, increasing financial difficulties from 1905 eventually resulted in the voluntary liquidation of the Guild in 1908. The original design for this necklace is illustrated in a page from Guild’s first catalogue published in about 1895. It is described as a necklace of Blue Enamel set with Pearls This necklace also reflects the naturalistic themes developed by Ashbee with the pendant consisting of a single stone set between leaves or wings.

Ann was educated at Oratory School and Exeter College Oxford. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 5th Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he landed in France on 13th April 1915. Transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and later Royal Airforce, serving as a Staff Officer. Mentioned in despatches on 16th January 1918 for service in Egypt and awarded the O.B.E in the New Year's Honours, 1st January 1919. Ann's brother, Major Crathorne Edward Isham Charlton Ann RFC is noted in Burkes Landed Gentry as: " Despatches twice and recommend for V.C.". The final MID was rescuing men from SS Arcadian when she was torpedoed on 15th April 1917. Chrathorne was attempting to rescue men when he drowned, he had been on route to train pilots in Egypt. An outstanding RAF Second World War Air Gunners Logbook to J Gibson, who after completing one operational tour volunteered for another and was involved in S.O.E drops. Sold by order of the family. Gibson first flew as an Observer on Anson's from November 1941 until February 1942. He then trained as an air gunner and was posted to 57 Squadron for an operational tour in January 1943. The Squadron was equipped with Lancaster Bombers. Gibson's tour wasn't without incident, on 8th January 1943 over Duisberg his aircraft was damaged at the target, on the 23rd over Essen an engine fire developed after being hit by AA fire. On 12th / 13th of March 1943, he claimed a fighter 'damaged', Gibson completed his first tour on July 8th and was given a rest period. In May 1944 he joined 81 Operational Training Unit in preparation for his return to Ops. Posted to 196 Squadron, equipped with Stirling bombers in August 1944, his aircraft towed Gliders to Arnhem and dropped supplies during 'Operation Market Garden'. Interestingly Gibson and his crew were involved in a number of operations to occupied Norway. His logbook notes: 8th November 1944 'S.O.E. Popex V' Near Rotterdam Light Flak' 20th February 1945 ' Pommell 16 S.O.E' 22nd February 1945 'Bit 20 S.O.E Norway' 30th March 1945 ' S.O.E Norway Cropper 49' - attacked 3 times by ME110 S.O.E being the Special Operations Executive, it's likely they were dropping supplies to resistance groups. On 24th March 1945, his crew took part in 'Operation Varsity' towing a gilder, he notes ' A marvellous sight' Gibson finished the war having done 41 Ops over Europe. With ten original photographs of the recipient and aircraft.
