A million thanks for doing all the skirts & generally everything so quickly. They'll keep me going for a while! Ever since our return, I have remained a light blue from the cold as the places where we went were boiling & for once I've gone a decent colour!! I do hope that you had a good view at St. Paul's [of the wedding], funnily enough I remember most of what went on! The school would like to improve the grounds for current students by creating a small quiet garden, installing native plants and a natural seating area (proceeds from the sale of this book will be used for this purpose)

Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821). Manuscript letter dictated & signed by Napoleon, addressed to General Clarke, Minister of War, 28 November 1813. This important piece of correspondence sheds new light on the intended breaking of capitulations, giving the order that "the soldiers returning with Marshal Saint-Cyr will serve." The letter reveals Napoleon's inner thought processes at subterfuge, attempting to trick the Coalition during an exchange of soldiers - something the Coalition forces rightly suspected. It is one of Napoleon's last letters before abdication and exile. Neatly clerk-written by Claude-François de Méneval [Napoleon's private secretary] on four sides of two leaves, 23 x 18.5cm (when folded), the paper bearing a French Imperial Eagle watermark. The addendum and calculations are both in Napoleon's hand. The letter has been researched for the vendor by the Fondation Napoléon, and copies of email correspondence between the vendor and François Houdecek are included. The letter has now been documented & published in the 14th volume of the Correspondance générale de Napoléon, edited by the Fondation Napoléon [37313]. Also included is a transcript of the letter (French & English) with footnotes to explain the historical context of key phrases. Of the 500 copies printed, 300 were issued to schools & libraries - this is a superb example of one of the even scarcer and more desirable 200 that were issued to booksellers. Octavo, hardback, publisher's original laminated pictorial boards. Complete with all requisite issue points, namely: full number line on copyright page, "10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1"; "1 wand" appearing twice on p.53; "Philosopher's" misspelled "Philospher's" on rear cover; "Wizardry and Witchcraft" [rather than "Witchcraft and Wizardry"] on rear cover; "Joanne Rowling" on copyright page; no space between "Taylor" and "1997" on copyright page. Internally very well-preserved, clean & bright; usual light toning to page edges; appears almost unread: no folded corners, no inscriptions, no foxing; a few very faint marginal marks in places, including lower gutters of title; original endpapers are good & bright with a star-shaped surface mark at corner of front pastedown; very slightly pulling at gutters of final page; binding very good, strong & unrestored with original laminated finish; slight fading/discolouration to spine; a few very faint scratches to laminate; light wear to extreme corners of boards & spine; very lightly bumped at edges of spine; a couple of very small, light bumps to edges of boards; very slight shelf-lean. Overall, very good indeed - a remarkably well-preserved example of the true first issue of the author's debut novel and first in the Harry Potter series. This is the origin of the best-selling book series in history. Very scarce
