1915 Star Trio to Private Edward Pitcher 1st Bn. Somerset light infantry. Killed in action 1st July 1916, First day Battle of The Somme. The battalion attacked towards the Redan Ridge, cut down by machine-gun fire from the Quadrilateral, desperate fighting with bomb and bullet. Casualties - 464. No known grave. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial. Good copied research. Medals NEF.
Military Cross awarded to Capt Thomas Welch 6th Batt Durham Light Infantry, Zonnebeke April 26th 1915. Reverse engraved, on original ribbon and pin bar with case. Later served as a Captain with the School of Instruction. Lived Spennymoor, Co Durham. MC L/G 29 June 1915 'For conspicuous gallantry and tenacity at Zonnebeke from 26th to 30th April 1915, when he with his company held a trench under heavy shell fire. His company was short of water and rations, and he had no flare pistols or periscopes and no previous experience of trench warfare. The losses of his company in killed and wounded were 45 out of a total of 120'. With research EF (1)
