There appears to have been an impact and resulting loss and flaking paint to the rim. Further light crackings to the neck. There is a crack extending around approximately three-quarters of the base of the neck that feels quite fragile. Some small nicks and pits to the surface of the body and some horizontal incised lines. Paintwork is in good condition overall. No obvious signs of restoration.

A pair of George III-style painted wooden mirrors, 20th century, each decorated in the Chippendale taste with a scrolling frame, flowers and foliate scrolls, 106cm wide147cm high (2)Condition ReportDust and dirt to the frame. Small break and repair to one leaf. The mirror plates with some light mottling, however, its consistency suggests these have been intentionally aged. A pair of Sèvres-style ormolu-mounted porcelain cachepots, late 19th/early 20th century, French, the decoration French or Austrian, each painted with oval cartouches containing figures in a pastoral landscape, floral and fruit sprays to a cobalt and gilt ground, mounted with twin acanthus cast ram's head handles and raised on four paw feet, united by an undertier with central pineapple finial, the porcelain painted with blue spurious marks to the underside,31cm wide21cm deep31cm high (2)Condition ReportOverall the pots are in fair condition but with significant restoration to the porcelain, some manufacturing flaws and age-related wear. The metal inserts are slightly misshapen and tarnished. The gilding and painted decoration to the porcelain later fired with some peeling to the cobalt and blistering to the gilding. Both pots have historic cracks and repairs to the bases. Some light tarnish to the mounts and elements that are slightly loose but secure. The stands sit level on a flat surface. Pile appears full and in good order. Fringes a little stained and frayed in places. Free from large stains, tears or unpleasant odours. Overall appears in good structural and cosmetic condition, although may benefit from a light clean.
A pair of upholstered armchairs by George Smith, of recent manufacture, in the Howard & Sons 'Bridgewater' style, each with pale blue herringbone upholstery and front turned supports, with loose covers,86cm wide104cm deep89cm high,with a matching stool (3)Condition ReportVery light wear and a few extremely light marks to upholstery. One or two small knocks to supports. The loose covers with some dirt and discolouration, with a mark to the bottom edge of the stool cover. Joints sound and solid and both chairs and stool appear in good structural and cosmetic condition and are ready to place. The chairs are sprung, with feather- filled seat cushions. The stool appears foam and feather-filled. Upholstery appears to be a cotton herringbone, and the loose covers linen. Manufacturer's labels are lacking beneath all pieces, however we understand that they were reupholstered around 6 years ago, which is when the labels may have been removed, with confirmation from the vendor that they were purchased from George Smith on the King's Road several years before that. A small gap between the malachite panel and one foot. The blue glass insert with a small crack underneath the rim however appears only surface level. The inkwells in need of fastening. The remaining personal effects of Major General Sir Samuel Benfield Steele (Medonte, Canada 1848 - London 1919): 1903: A framed and glazed photograph titled 'B' Division South African Constabulary, Pretoria, 1903, names written in black ink above and below, (top row)- Lt Lang, Capt Strott, P. Maden, Capt Hilliman, CC/TO Balton?, Lt Agnew, Lt St George, Capt Moses, Lt Long-Innes, Capt Brann, Lt Clarenne, Lt Irvine, Lt Saunders, (center)- Gen. Baden-Powell, Maj.Birdwood, Col. Steel. O.C 'B' Div., (bottom row)- Capt Swift, Maj Travers, Capt De Havilland, Capt Kersley, Capt Hillard, Lt Steele, Maj. Edwards, and others 24 x 29cm, (9 1/2 x 11 1/2in). Lord Strathcona Horse was a privately formed Canadian light cavalry unit, in British Imperial service, was sent to South Africa during the Second Boer War, where Steele commanded them with distinction in the role of reconnaissance scouts. Steele, however, disliked what he was ordered to do by the British, which included burning towns, farms and homesteads, killing livestock of the Boer families and moving the populace to concentration camps. After the war, the regiment arrived in London in February 1900. Steele returned to South Africa that same year to command 'B' Division of the South African Constabulary, a position he held until 1906. The South African Constabulary (SAC) was a paramilitary force set up in 1900 under British Imperial control to police areas captured from the two independent Boer republics of Transvaal and Orange Free State after the Second Boer War. Its first Inspector-General was Major-General Robert Baden-Powell, later the founder of the worldwide Scout Movement. After hostilities ended in 1902, the two countries became British Colonies, and the force was disbanded in 1908.
