His last act was to make a present of Lolita to an elderly lady in the hotel`, plus a large quantity of approx. 1000 postcards, mostly addressed to Wyndham Lloyd and many from his brother John but including one postcard from John Betjeman, sixty-three from Anthony and Violet Powell, of which approx. forty appear to be in Anthony Powell`s hand, though variously signed Tony and Violet, Violet and Tony, Tony, T., etc., one of the cards signed Violet being a real photo postcard showing Anthony Powell as a young boy in Holland Park, other identified postcard writers being identified as John Steegman and A. C. Wood of the British Consul (often signed Tony), and two copies of Wyndham Lloyd`s A Hundred Years of Medicine, 1936, one with corrections by Lloyd. Wyndham Lloyd (1901-1980) was a surgeon, author of A Hundred Years of Medicine (1936) and brother of John Knatchbull Lloyd, who was friendly with the socialite group The Bright Young Things, which included Anthony Powell, Evelyn Waugh, John Betjeman, the Sitwells and the Mitfords amongst others. Very scarce in a dust-jacket. (1)
Eleven pieces of Chinese export and other blue and white porcelain. (11) CONDITION REPORT: A good selection of porcelain, 18th and late 19th century. The lot comprises - A pair of small blue and white vases height 9cm good condition. Rice bowl of non uniform shape, rim chip and repair, diameter 13.5cm, looks like cargo china, a small vase similar height 5cm in good condition with tiny crumb chip. Long shaped oblong plate width 33.5cm. Circular blue and white plate design width 23.3cm, tiny rim chip with plate hanger. Oblong blue and white trough with reticulated sides, good condition and showing great age length 23cm. Two small dishes with light gilding and swag design continental china with some repair. Two further plates / shallow bowls, export china, tiny rough edges to the shaped dish where it has been on a metal hanger but otherwise both good. All items are un-marked.
A continental gilt brass Rococo style table light, on marble plinth base, together with a pair of similar style three-branch wall lights. (3) CONDITION REPORT: Good condition, with shades which require some attention, a few fittings to the table lamp need minor attention. All three items need electrically re-wiring by an electrical engineer.
An early 20th century Australian Aboriginal short throwing club with incised decoration and simple handle, length 60cm. CONDITION REPORT: There is notable wear to the "blade" and other scratches and surface blemishes throughout. The club itself is very light and maybe for ceremonial use rather than battle use.
A quantity of vintage OO gauge locomotives and accessories including six unboxed Hornby Dublo locos, various boxes boxed Hornby Dublo accessories including D1 level crossing, ES7 colour light signal junction, uncoupling rail, buffer stops and a boxed Hornby Dublo deltic diesel electric locomotive, no.2234 etc.
A Wedgwood blue jasper dip silver plate mounted biscuit barrel, a Wedgwood blue jasper dip teapot and a matching twin handled sucrier and cover (af) (3). CONDITION REPORT: The biscuit barrel has a 2cm x 1cm chip to the foot rim, some further surface wear and a couple of pin head sized flaws to the relief decoration. The plate mount is totally rubbed off. The teapot has a 1cm x 3mm chip where the lid meets the body of the teapot. Some light rubbing elsewhere. The sucrier's finial has been broken and ground down. Some light surface wear.
An 18th/19th century Chinese porcelain figure of an official wearing elaborate headdress and robe, painted in enamels with six dragons amongst clouds on a red ground, height 28.5cm. CONDITION REPORT: There is a small section to the reverse of his cloak missing approx 1cm x 0.5cm, there is also the tip of part of the headdress missing approx 5mm, some light surface wear elsewhere and some firing flaws to the base, also a flaw to the moulding to the sleeve of his right arm. There are also traces of something in holes in his chin, nose and beside his ears which now have the remnants remaining.
Arianna 2nd-3rd cent. A.D.Intaglio on light orange agate cornelian, mm 11x8x2,5. Form 8c. Arianna wearing a long chiton sleeping, lying on her side; a faun approaches to her to wake up. The scene recalls the mythological episode, often depicted in roman paintings, according to wich Arianna, abandoned by Theseus on Nasso island, is awakened by Dyonisus and joins the god an his followers.

*Nasmyth (James, 1808-1890). A group of eight uncoloured lithographs after Nasmyth, 1855, titled and dated in the narrow margins, a few plts. with light monochrome hand-tinting, all somewhat spotted, 24 x 39cm and similar. See James Nasmyth’s ‘Autobiography’, edited Samuel Smiles: ‘Now and then I drew upon my fancy, and with pen and ink conjured up “the Castle of Udolpho”, “A Bit of Old England”... [and listing the six other titles found here]... I need not say with how much pleasure I executed these drawings in my evening hours. They were not “published”, but I drew them with lithographic ink, and had them printed by Mr Maclure. I afterwards made presents of the series to some of my intimate friends’. The original pen and ink drawing of the Alchemist is catalogued in the Wellcome Library. The British Museum has a copy of the Robinson Crusoe print. (8)

Rossetti’, Somerset House, 29 April, no year, to [Algernon] Swinburne, begins ‘I have to thank you (days ago by rights) for the copy sent me of the Song of Italy: how highly I rate it I need not repeat. Even before receiving it I had asked the editor of the Chronicle (the one paper I am now writing in) whether he wd. accept a review of it from me - adding that I much agreed with you in the Mazzinian and anti-papal opinions expressed (the Chronicle being to some extent the organ of liberal Catholicism)... ‘, 4 pp., both 8vo (2)

Agnes Maude Royden (1876-1956) would appear to be the most notable speaker on this occasion, and after a long lecture tour of the USA is known to have spoken at 267 meetings all over Britain in 1912. The broadside notes in it heading that the Society is law-abiding and non-party, in contrast to the militant suffragettes. -1
