René Lalique (France, 1860-1945), a circular light amber coloured glass bowl in the 'Volubilis Pattern, France' circa 1930, designed in 1921; the three opalescent volubilis (Morning Glory) flowers to the base with stems that act as feet, etched mark of R Lalique, France, no.383 (21.5cm diameter)Condition Report: This has come from a private vendor and there are no major problems noted. The etched marks and writing to the underside are clearly visible, some minor scratches to the inside of the bowl commensurate with usage and age. Otherwise in good original condition.
An Art Deco style/period bowl marked 'Saumont' (Henri), France' to underside and with concentric opalescent semi-spheres in relief to the underside (26cm diameter)Condition Report: There are some scratches commensurate with age and usage to the inside of the bowl, mostly lower half. when held up to the light the opalescence is pleasing. A large hand-knotted Ushak style carpet (possibly Donegal, Arts & Crafts); the light lime-green predominant rectangular field centred with a stylised flowerhead pattern and surrounded by similarly stylised varying flowerheads and sprigs, the larger light turquoise border with shaped medallions with further differing sized flowerheads and between two smaller salmon-pink borders, several prevalent old repairs and reparations, some damage and tears to outer edge and some wear/tears to main body of carpet. A circa 1770 oak dresser base, the moulded top above three frieze drawers retaining original brass swan-neck handles and further over two end fielded panel cupboard doors flanking a central panel, raised on short bracket feet (206cm wide x 51cm deep x 87cm high)Condition Report: The lower section of the back has been replaced with chipboard and the upper section of the back (both of which run full-width) is noted to be in light elm, as per the catalogue description, the handles and locks look to be original and present. The pine-lined drawer bottoms run from front to back. The moulded top and the drawers and fielded panels are crossbanded. The two-planked top is 'parting' due to shrinkage across the grain and has some ink marks/stains and knocks etc. generally commensurate with age. The left-hand side of the top is lighter than the right-hand side and the rest of the dresser due to sunlight etc. There appears to be some historic woodworm mainly but nor entirely confined to the full width horizontal rail separating the drawers from the cupboard doors and central fielded panel below. The front right-hand foot is away and needs attention. There is an historic approx. 10cm 'split' running from top of the right-hand side panel (as viewed from front) but does not detract in the Auctioneer's opinion. The two-plank left-hand side end also exhibits central gap (shrinkage across the grain etc). Overall the colour is pleasing and a good restorer could polish out and restore a uniform colour. The elm base appears to be original.
