Kate Sherman Pines, 2022 Oil on Card Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About Kate Sherman grew up on the Jurassic coast of Dorset. After graduating with a degree in Fine Art she continued her painting practice while working in the London art scene, before deciding in 2005 to paint full time. She lives and works in Sussex. The paintings, all oil on panel, originate from photographs she has taken of her surrounding landscape. This photographic source is important because the paintings capture a reflective notion of memory, of the emotional distance between a real landscape and a photograph, between experience and longing. It is a poignant and quiet melancholy reminiscent of Edward Hopper, that is expressed both by the portrayal of sparse unpopulated landscapes containing elemental traces of man, and by her restrained palette which is often suffused in a reserved northern European light of chalky blues and pink-blushed greys. Lee Madgwick The Barn, 2022 Pen on Paper Signed verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Lee Madgwick's (b. King's Lynn, Norfolk 1980) mysterious and emotive paintings depict scenes of abandonment, seclusion and dereliction. Both his urban and rural pictures portray parts of the modern landscape that are often overlooked by many (with occasional sprinklings of surrealism). With an undercurrent of mischievous menace throughout, the subject matter is at once thrown into question. Who inhabits these places? What lives do they lead? What is happening or about to happen? "I would describe my work as imagined realism. I hope to achieve a sense of drama in my paintings, presenting a familiar image yet placing it in an intimate, moody and possibly unlikely setting. A narrative is very important - but intentionally never fully explained. I like to leave it for the viewer to come up with their own interpretation." Lee paints on canvas in oils and acrylics. A play of light is used to generate an abundance of seemingly inexplicable moods to contrast with a brooding sky. Lee has exhibited throughout the UK including London and Edinburgh as well as Dublin, Amsterdam, Rome, Milan, Stockholm, Madrid, Singapore and New York. His work features in private art collections around the world. Martin Davis Work-Life Balance Dice, 2022 Acrylic on Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About Martin Davis is an ex-firefighter turned artist. After university he spent more than 30 years in the fire & rescue service, during which time he found painting was a perfect antidote to the operational stresses of his working life. He committed himself fully to his art in 2008 after retirement and has spent the last 14 years finding his distinctive artistic voice. Martin is by admission an instinctive artist. Education He graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1976 (2.1 Economics) but in terms of art he is almost wholly self-trained, his only formal qualification being an Art GCE "O" level from his schooldays. Even so his artwork is bought by private collectors around the world and he has secured gallery space throughout the UK as well as in his native Derbyshire where he works from his home studio in Swanwick. My compositions are often associated with distant memories from childhood, here of hazy summers and the play of light and shadows. "Work-life balance dice" I guess is a still life, but a rapidly executed one. Much of my inspiration comes from words and phrases and modern concepts. I love to use the play of words against an image when on suggests the other, even out of it's usual context. Language and visual art are natural bedfellows. Sophie Wake Miniature Vase w/ Birds, 2022 Gouache on Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About I am a contemporary British artist, working from my studio in Ashburton, Devon I worked for almost 20 years as a busy freelance illustrator. Today however my fine art practice responds to the rhythms of meditation and ancient tree tea ceremony which has become a fundamental companion to my creative approach.Guided by direct somatic experience my works are instinctive and intuitive, each one a process of deep self enquiry and profound reflection. Working with oil on canvas or gouache on paper, my paintings imbue a liminal quality, a sense of in-betweenness that delights in intangible wordlessness. My fine art practice has become suffused with my spiritual practice. Any subject matter is treated as divine, iconic, and dances, uninhibited in its own light. Birds rejoice in liberation, female figures bathe in their own inner beauty and freedom. Influences of Shamanism, African rock art, Ancient clay models, and Greek pottery can be felt throughout the collections, which celebrate the power of storytelling and basic human emotion in simple and authentic form. Joy Hillyer Edge I, 2022 Acrylic on Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About Joy Hillyer's paintings aim to convey a sense of place, of placement and exploration within the landscape. She is concerned with the ambiguity of the liminal: the juxtaposition of the real and the imagined; the interplay between essence and symbol, between light and darkness; the ephemeral and the enduring. Her work often uses her photographs as a starting point or as the 'outer shell' for her painting. These may be of the natural world or the urban landscape. Particular events or echoes of memory convey layers of meaning within a deceptively pared down landscape. Some paintings refer more overtly to the tradition of landscape painting with an echo of Romanticism and the Sublime; others are on a smaller scale and focus on a detail. Some images reference a political or ecological issue. They reveal a sharpness, a tension and energy that is unsentimental. Colour is as important as form. Hillyer's work inhabits the shifting boundary between landscape and abstraction. It rarely includes figures: instead the individual is invited into a solitary experience of what Peter Doig describes as 'between the actuality of the scene and something that is in your head'. Vacheron & Constantin. An aluminium open face keyless wind pocket watch together with a further aluminium pocket watchDate: Circa 1945Movement: 17-jewel Swiss lever, cut and compensated metallic balance, No.455197Dial: Silvered, applied polished Arabic numeral hour markers, black outer minute track, subsidiary seconds at 6, polished Breguet style handsCase: Polished round, snap on back engraved 'Presented to George Hodson by Aluminium Limited 1947', No.286909Signed: Case, dial & movementSize: 44mm Accompaniments: Vacheron & Constantin box, metal chain, brochure, further aluminium pocket watch bearing the name George Hodson, Chairman of British Aluminium LimitedFootnotes:In the mid 20th Century Vacheron & Constantin were commissioned with the difficult job of making a series of watches predominantly out of aluminium. Despite being so notoriously lightweight, Vacheron & Constantin were able to succeed and the case and plates of these watches were all made out of the material. The result was an exceptionally light but sturdy watch as found with the current lot. These watches were then gifted to important members of the various aluminium companies, often upon their retirement. The history of aluminium production is an interesting tale of cartels comprising global superpowers all pushing for dominance of key markets. There were three main cartels of the early to mid 20th century - Aluminum-Industrie A. G. Neuhausen (AIAG), The Aluminum Co of Amercia (Alcoa) and Alliance Aluminum Compagnie (AAC). The current lot has a presentation to George Hodson who is recorded as being the Resident Assistant Manager in Basel in 1931 until at least 1945 for AAC and along with Ludwig Braasch 'constituted, at least until 1939, the entire executive staff of Alliance'. Also included in the lot is a further aluminium pocket watch with the hour markers spelling out the name of George Hodson.
