Los 612

A large French ormolu and patinated bronze striking eight-day figural mantel clock (Pendule a la Geoffrin)After the model by Laurent Guiard, probably first quarter 19th CenturyModelled with a bronze reclining female figure reading a folio, her left elbow resting on top of the arched clock case, surmounted by a globe, on turned support with ribbons at the base, flanked by a female caryatid to each corner, each with a cone finial, the plinth with a moulded edge above fluted swept sides and rectangular base, the 6 1/2 in. circular white enamel dial inscribed Lefaucheur Her. du Roy A Paris, with finely pierced latten hands, Roman chapters and Arabic five-minute markers, the twin train movement with rectangular plates, rounded to each corner, with countwheel strike on a bell, silk suspension66cm wide; 48cm high; 25.5cm deep Not until Christian Baulez's 1989 article were the origins of this popular model fully researched. In his article Baulez identified that the first known version was commissioned by Madame de Geoffrin (1699-1777), a leading figure in the French Enlightenment. Her notebooks referred to it as 'ma pendula de Guyard', which has now been identified as Laurent Guiard (1723-1788), much celebrated following his January 1754 exhibition at Versailles of the equestrian statue of Louis XV. Her clock was most likely commissioned later in the same year. Another version which she commissioned in 1768 was presented to Denis Diderot, now at the Musée du Breuil de Saint-Germain at Langres. In his article Baulez suggests that the female figure representing 'The Employment of Time' is possibly inspired by the 1738 portrait of Madame Geoffrin by Jean-Marc Nattier (d. 1766), entitled 'Study'.Madame Geoffrin played host to many of the most influential Philosophes and Encyclopédistes of her time such as Diderot, who popularised, by association, this model of clock. The English purchasers, including Walpole, were Whigs, and opposed to George III's policies.A similar example with a movement by Le Roy, raised on an ebony base, is at Waddesdon Manor, illustrated, G. de Bellaigue, The James A. de Rothschild Collection at Waddesdon Manor, Fribourg, 1974, Vol.I, no. 17, pp. 104-107. Another, with movement by Berthoud, also on an ebony base and with a patinated bronze figure, is in the Wallace Collection, illustrated, P. Hughes, The Wallace Collection, Catalogue of Furniture, London, 1996, Vol. I, no. 99 (F267), pp. 440-443. The clock, once in the collection of Horace Walpole, was sold at Christie's, London, 23 June 1999, lot 120.There are a number of free-hand marks and notes on the movement: 1. On the movement's front plate 'Cariel Le 26 Mai 1828'. 2. The brass dial-mounting plate has a scratch mark 'Gille l'Aine A Paris ... Le grande figure couche'.3. The reverse of the enamel dial is inscribed in a light red ink 'Le Faucheur Hor. Du Roy A Paris', perhaps the dial maker's note; there is also another indistinct name?LITERATURE:C. B.S.A. B21 Registration Number: FTU 679 First Registered: 1938 Engine Size: 250cc Colour: Black and Silver Engine Number: KB 21701 Frame Number: KB 211093 V5C present Val Page, chief designer and engineer at B.S.A. designed a new range of bikes in the late 1930s, with the war fast approaching and fuel rationing on the cards page used just one engine design for his new range, split into the light B model and the heavier M range, both with much in common in their manner of construction. All had a vertical cylinder, gear-driven camshafts, rear magneto and dry sump lubrication. They were simple and robust, also affordable. Even though this model had a smaller 250cc side valve engine, the bike was still physically imposing with sporting looks and like all B.S.A. motorcycles of their day, incredibly well engineered. This example offered is an extremely original machine, with correct numbers and tin ware. The current owner has stated that at some time in its long history it has had been owned by a B.S.A. works rider. Mechanically the bike is said to be in good order with good compression and still sports a positive degree and patina. A nice prewar lightweight machine capable of keeping up with modern traffic, eligible for many of the vintage motorcycle events annually up and down the country. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Later restoration, paint ok with some micro blistering. Chrome good. Engine and gearbox casings tarnished but good. Dry stored for recommissioning.

^ Scott Super Squirrel Registration Number: UA7497 First Registered: 01-03-1929 Engine Size: 596cc Colour: Black Engine Number: Y3421A Frame Number: 2738 V5C present The Scott Motorcycle company was founded in 1901 by Yorkshireman, Alfred Angas Scott. He built his first engine in 1901 and set the pattern for most Scotts from then on, for his twin cylinder two-stroke . He fitted it to his Premier bicycle in front of the head stock, from where it drove the from wheel by a belt. From then on Scott developed a twin cylinder two-stroke with a central flywheel, at that time in 1904, a might 333cc. The concept for his machines remained the same for many years sporting a two speed gearbox. Alfred Scott submitted several works machines in to the TT from as early as 1909 with one of his bikes and later setting the fastest lap in 1911. Scott went on to repeatedly set records and have multiple wins at the TT, with iconic works riders just as Frank Applebee and Tim Wood. After Scott's untimely death in 1923, the company went on to develop larger machines but based on the same mechanical concept. This wonderful bike offered is an example of such a machine. With its 596cc engine and light frame, the Scott Flying Squirrel Sports was an extremely competitive machine keeping up with the new breed of OHC bikes in their day. The Scott is a credit to its owner, sporting huge originality, correctness and mechanically appears to be in fine condition, with good compression. The paintwork is still to a very good standard and although has been dry stored for some years shows no signs of deterioration. A fine, rare machine ready for light recommissioning. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Later restoration, paint ok with some micro blistering. Chrome good. Engine and gearbox casings tarnished but good. Dry stored for recommissioning.

^ Ariel VB Motorcycle Registration Number: SFO 860 First Registered: 14-4-1959 Engine Size: 600cc Colour: Black Engine Number: LD673 Frame Number: CAPR 13700 V5C present The Ariel VB sported a side valve, four stroke 600cc engine. A powerful machine which could pull a side car or two passengers and their luggage comfortably. Production numbers for the VB ran from 1947-58, this particular bike was not registered until 1959 so a very late example indeed. From the same wonderful collection as the Vincent, the Ariel is in very original condition. Not being used for several years it will need recommissioning and some light restoration but mechanically every aspect looks to be good with healthy compression. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Later restoration, paint ok with some micro blistering and paint damage to tank. Chrome ok with some light corrosion. Engine and gearbox casings tarnished but good. Age related registration number. Dry stored for recommissioning.

Mini Cooper Registration number: R105 NSO First Registered: 13-01-1998 Engine Size: 1275cc Colour: Blue Engine Number: 12A2LK70 363131 Chassis Number: SAXXNNAZEWD154269 V5C present The revolutionary design of the Mini was created by Sir Alec Issigonis (1906-1988), considered a visionary in industrial transportation. It was intended as an affordable vehicle in response to the oil crisis. Along its production period it was built at the Cowley plants in the United Kingdom. In its long production Austin's successful attempts at making a sporting and competitive road and rally car resulted in the iconic Mini Cooper. In September 1990, the Mini Cooper RSP (Rover Special Products) was introduced. The RSP was the first Cooper in 19 years and the first Mini with a 1,275 cc engine in a decade. It was, to this point, the only non-Works Mini fitted with an oil cooler as standard. The production of 1,050 for the UK was nowhere near enough. It was an instant success and sold out even before cars began to appear in showrooms. Last series of the original Mini went on sale in 1995 and was the most refined iteration of the British city car. It also lost none of the original character or timeless style despite numerous modern touches and bold colours. This and very last run of The Mini Cooper, for this model RSP threw in every extra possible to make this machine fast and refined . We are pleased to be able to offer a most wonderful example of this sporting icon in fabulous condition . The paintwork is finished in its distinctive factory Tahiti blue metallic and sports original alloy mini-lite wheels, quad spots and its distinctive white stripe decals on the bonnet. The interior beautifully trimmed with its sports seats covered in Monaco leather , classic walnut dash housing a magnitude of period dials. With some expensive upgrades such as Mintex race brake pads, adjustable A-ride suspension, uprated Mini sports stage 3 twinport head, new alloys and Yokohama tyres. On the road this Cooper is great fun to drive. It has a punchy 1275 engine and a very smooth gearbox and the later Minis are also geared taller to make long distance cruising simple. This late Mini Cooper is a great offer for those who are after a car with real heritage, but also one that allows trouble-free ownership and can be driven on a regular basis. Showing an original 83,000 miles this lovely car has been the subject of huge expenditure to keep it in showroom condition, backed up with a large history file, receipts for several thousand pounds and owners related material. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Paintwork generally good, later respray now showing small areas of micro blistering on front wing seam cappings and some isolated areas of surface rust blistering near window surround. Interior very good, leather seats showing light wear. Steering wheel discoloured and worn. Alloy wheels and tyres very good. Runs well and changes gear smoothly.

MGTF Sports Coupe Registration number: VA03 WCV First Registered: 17-08-2003 Mileage: 82485 Engine Size: 1588cc Colour: Blue Engine Number: 16K4FP23106671 Chassis Number: SARRDMBEB4D621907 V5C present By 1991, Rover was working of a new mid-engined sports car similar in size (and expected to be similar in price) to the recently launched Mazda MX5 and Lotus Elan. The final product, the MG F, was finally unveiled on 8 March 1995, and went on sale in September that year with a 1.8 litre 120bhp engine and was joined several months later by a 145bhp VVC (variable valve control) version. It was hugely popular and received plaudits for its excellent ride and handling. The MG F received a mild facelift in August 1999 and with its revisions was renamed using the historic TF name in January 2002, but production was halted, following the collapse of the MG Rover Group in April 2005. The MGF remains a fantastic entry level classic that is more and more appealing to the younger enthusiast due to its cheaper price tag. On the road they are sprightly and handle superbly due to its mid engined benefits and complementary geometry. Styling is modern but with a classic flare drawing from sixties and seventies supercar design. This particular example is finished in striking metallic blue with sports cloth interior, showing a very reasonable 82,000 miles runs sweetly and performs as it should. The condition can be said to be extremely nice and with some further detailing and cleaning would present itself as a good candidate for the for the collector and enthusiast. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Generally good condition. Showing signs of repaint and areas of overspray. Light wear to interior, small rips to hood. Small area of surface rust to lower rear N/S arch. Tyres perished and front MG badge faded Starts and drives well.

Ford Escort Convertible Registration Number: J388 BNG First Registered: 01-08-1991 Mileage: 61112 Engine Size: 1596cc Colour: Red Engine Number: MY72899 ChassisNumber: WF0LXXGKALMY72899 V5C presentThe car included paperwork noting the replacement clutch, timing belt, water pump, waxoil treatment, the original sales brochure and driver's handbook. The Ford Escort was introduced in the United Kingdom at the end of 1967 making its show debut at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1968. The Escort was a commercial success in many parts of Western Europe but nowhere more than in the UK, where it was the national best seller of the 1960's. In June 1974, less than six years after the car's UK introduction, Ford announced the completion of the two millionth Ford Escort, a milestone unmatched by any Ford model outside the USA. Of the many Escort models made, their convertible was a European wide success, in XR3 and standard 1.6 and 1.8i form, they represented and were driven by the young, cool 1980s driver, from the stockbroker to the cafe owner. Examples are rare now, especially with low miles and original paint work. This one is no exception, with a good interior and very clean hood. Showing 61,000 miles believed to be genuine. For auction with a very realistic and tempting estimate and just in time for summer. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Good paintwork, original interior with light wear, hood in good order. Starts and drives well.

Jaguar XJ6 Sovereign (XJ40) Registration number: H459 WHH First Registered: 09-06-2000 Previously registered over seas, declared manufactured 1991 Engine Size: 3200cc Colour: Bronze Engine Number: 9BPANA101775 Chassis Number: SAJJHALG3AK637411 V5C present The contemporary fashion trends of the 80's were clear to see in the styling of XJ40 Sovereign unveiled in 1986. The overall proportions were unmistakably Jaguar, with an overall more angular feel to it, featuring rectangular headlamps as well as square rear lights. A real innovation for Jaguar was the quarter light in the rear pillar, creating six light style. XJ40 Sovereign was an instant success, and demand was initially greater than what Jaguar could supply. Under the skin, XJ40 featured a new rear suspension with double wishbones and the brake discs mounted outboard. The manual gearbox was a five speed Getrag transmission first seen on the XJS, while the automatic was a four speed ZF with a new shift called the 'J' gate. 'J' gate was the brainchild of Jim Randle; it allowed gears to be easily and rapidly selected for more lively motoring. Very few clean examples of this model due to a short production run quickly being superseded by newer models. This particular example sums up a time of economic wealth and customer's desire to show it, with bold colour schemes and sumptuous interiors. Finished in champagne gold and trimmed in beautiful biscuit leather, this is a true survivor of the lavish and indulgent 1980s. On inspection the interior is in remarkable, original condition with gleaming walnut and excellent internal brightwork. The engine is silky smooth and transmission changed effortlessly when expected. The coachwork is very original showing very few signs of age with only small areas of rust on the lower offside wing. Accompanied with a history file containing, old Mots, receipts, hand books and owner's manual. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lotOriginal paintwork with some signs of touch up. Lower front wings behind wheel arch rusted. Interior original with light wear. Leather seats good with light wear. Headlining showing areas of sagging. Wheels and Tyres good. Starts and drives well.

MG Midget MK.3 Registration number: SVG 722N First Registered: 28-08-1974 Engine Size: 1275cc Colour: Orange Engine Number: 12U586PN1649 Chassis Number: GAN5.1467829 -G V5C present Throughout the 1960s and '70s, Britain led the world when it boiled down to affordable sports cars. The MG Midget was originally based upon the successful Austin Healey (Frog Eye) Sprite but with significant body changes and similar Sprite versions continued alongside to 1971. During it's life significant changes occurred including engine capacities rising from 948cc to 1493cc, with the most controversial being the 1500. We are happy to offer a very clean example of this MK.111 Midget. Powered by the successful 1275cc unit giving the car a very sprightly performance. For this model the square-shaped rear wheel arches became rounded in January 1972. Also in this year, a Triumph steering rack was fitted, giving a gearing that was somewhat lower than earlier Midgets. The car has been the subject of a fairly comprehensive restoration over the years and the vendor has been witness to newly fitted factory doors and wings. The interior upholds a great deal of originality, with correct seats, dash and dials. The engine is smooth and responsive, and she changes up and down the gears effortlessly. Finished in presentable, period dark orange with black sills, a revised recessed black grille, and squared off taillights as on the MGB and 13-inch Rubery Owen ''Rostyle'' wheels. To many this car represents the best of the bunch and prices are still incredibly affordable for what is a very classic British sports car. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Older restoration, paintwork good, showing signs of rust on rear N/S wing top. Interior worn and discoloured. Light tarnishing to chrome. Tyres perished. Runs and drives well.

Riley RME 1.5 Litre Registration Number: OAO 270 First Registered: 16-06-1954 Engine Size: 1496cc Colour: Blue Engine Number: 12830 Chassis Number: RME 22608 V5C present Riley's slogan was 'As old as the industry-As modern as the hour '. And to many the Riley proved to be the most successful motor car in the world. From its humble beginnings in the late 19th century to creating some of the most beautiful and advanced cars ever made. Riley prided itself on its sporting pedigree and with the help of aeronautical designers built gorgeous streamline bodies in the 1930s. The postwar RM series was derived from earlier body styling that gave birth to its predecessors such as the Kestrel and Big four. The RM's grace and quality of build firmly secured Riley's position as a major player in Post war Britain and although the company now run by Nuffield, managed to create probably the last truly classic Riley, taking aspects of the thirties but with a revised, more powerful twin overhead cam, one and a half and two and half litre units, bigger breaks by girling, independent suspension and better handling. The RM was born in the late 1940s and under the guise of earlier design was a truly modern motor car, or as Riley themselves described it in 1945, 'Magnificent Motoring'. In this sale we are pleased to offer two very good examples of the famous RM from a single vendor. This model sports the smaller, and very successful one and a half litre engine . A late RME dating from 1954 in charming smoke blue with black vinyl roof . In very good condition with no signs of corrosion, well maintained by its present owner and Riley enthusiast. Charming original interior, good chrome-work and is said to be mechanically good order. Riley RM prices are still sensible unlike their pre-war cousins, and with good spares availability and two strong national owners' clubs, they are a joy to own and drive. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Older restoration showing signs of minimal wear to paint. Chrome work good with areas of light tarnishing. Original interior with age related wear to leather seats and headlining. Minor perishing to tyres. Starts and drives well.

Riley RMB 2.5 litre Registration Number: GMO 212 First Registered: 06-06-1951 Engine Size: 2443cc Colour: White Engine Number: 61S8496 Chassis Number: 61S8496 V5C present From the same home as the previous lot, we are pleased to offer a lovely example of the larger engined RM series. Riley's experimentations with a larger engine for their RM resulted in the birth of the RMB. With a top speed now touching 95mph and 0-60 slashed from 25 seconds to 16.5 seconds this really was a very powerful motorcar of its day. With all these changes in what was still a heavy car but, consumption only dropped by three miles per gallon from the smaller 1.5 Litre unit to the new 2.5 unit. Finished in pleasant cream livery, body condition upon inspection reveals no corrosion and brightwork is in fine condition. The interior benefits from professional re-trimming in good quality leather with headlining and door cards also being renewed at some stage. Again mechanically in good order and ready for gentle recommissioning. A very smart and capable post-war sports saloon with great investment potentially, the RMB is rarer, more sought after and consequently not appearing as often on the open market. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Older restoration showing signs of minimal wear to paint. Chrome work good with areas of light tarnishing. Original interior with age related wear to leather seats and headlining. Minor perishing to tyres. Starts and drives well.

Sunbeam Rapier Registration Number: GHN 631D First Registered: 01-01-1966 Mileage: 94366 Engine Size: 1725cc Colour: Red Engine Number: B325000214 Chassis Number: BB250002140DHS0 V5C present Announced at the London Motor Show of 1955, the Sunbeam Rapier was the first of a new range of Rootes cars that was to include the Hillman Minx and the Singer Gazelle. A complete departure from the Sunbeam MKIII it replaced, it was a modern-looking two-door, four-seater Coupe with such standard equipment as leather trim and overdrive. The bodies were built by Pressed Steel, shipped to Thrupp & Maberly in London for painting and trimming and then moved to the Rootes plant at Ryton-on-Dunsmore for final assembly. Though initially a little underpowered, the Rapier had inherently excellent handling and was quickly adopted for rallying. Indeed the launch of the Series II version took place at the end of the 1958 Monte Carlo Rally in which Peter Harper's Works Rapier had finished fifth overall. Over its twenty-one year reign, the model progressed through five series, the swansong being the Series V derivative introduced in 1965. Though visually almost identical to its predecessor, it was notable for its larger, five-bearing engine of 1725cc capacity. Just 3,759 Series Vs were built, making it the rarest of all versions of the model. This example on offer is presented in original 'Pippin' red and has been the subject of a light restoration. The interior can only be described as delightful with recently recovered seats in correct Blenheim Black vinyl. Dash and instrumentation are correct with all dials appearing to work well, complete with period radio . The engine has been professionally restored using a replacement engine block, re-bored with new Hepolite pistons fitted, camshaft bearings, crankshaft bearings, timing chain, cam followers and core plugs. The transmission benefits from new centre clutch plate, master and slave cylinder, full oil seal kit and half shaft oil seal kit. The brake system has had a complete overhaul including wheel cylinders, shoes and servo assembly. A fine example of this rare sixties two door coupe in fabulous condition internally and externally and with its powerful 1725cc engine with overdrive performs better than most cars of its era and was subsequently used successfully Europe wide in motorsport events proving itself as an extremely competitive and robust competition entry. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Recent restoration including paintwork to a good standard. Re trimmed seats in very good order. Interior clean. Comprehensive mechanical restoration and upgrades (see related paperwork). Tyres and wheels in good order. Starts and drives well.

Wolseley Model Eight Registration Number: EFU 658 First Registered: 08-12-1947 Engine Size: 918cc Colour: Black Engine Number: 3360 Chassis Number: 308/3336 V5C present Wolseley is a name synonymous with quality pre and post war, and even in their smaller models no expense was spared in luxury and performance. The model eight is a four door, light saloon car which was produced by Wolseley from 1946 to 1948. These cars were only made between 1946 and 1948 (just over 5,300 were made in Birmingham) and they don't come up for sale very often. The engine is 918cc OHV, with a 4-speed gearbox and hydraulic brakes. Apparently, at launch, the Wolseley 8 was priced at £416, £115 more than the equivalent Morris, reflecting the more luxurious nature of the car and the better engine. Austin Seven AEW Sports Special Registration number: YVS573 First Registered: 1936 Engine Size: 749cc Colour: Maroon and black Engine Number: M290024 Chassis Number: 259536 V5C present In 1932 a coachbuilder called A.E.Wright at Bedford Garage, Beford Road, Alexandra Park, London started building bodies on new Standard Austin seven chassis. Modelled on similar specials like Swallow, Arrow and Gordon England it was Wright's attempt of a close coupled two seater sports which would potentially take a slice of the increasing affordable open sports market many car producers were trying to tap into. The AEW was a pretty little car with cut away sides and light body giving it type 65 looks but at a greatly reduced price tag due to construction on standard high chassis. Performance was significantly better than a standard Seven and with its folding windscreen and louvred bonnet had real sporty appeal. Unfortunately Wright's exploits were short lived due to the ever increasing competition and production costs, cars were made in low numbers approximately around 200, and very few survive today. It is said that this example offered is one left of four known. This rare survivor was discovered in 1993 in a farm yard . In barn find condition, ripe for restoration but remained complete with original engine, bodywork and factory fittings. Over the next few years it was subject to a full and detailed restoration by the discerning and knowledgeable owner who embarked on comprehensive strip down, refurbishing every aspect of the car but keen to keep as much originality as possible. Finished in maroon over black and can only by described as in fantastic condition, is a joy to drive. With its responsive rebuilt 750cc engine, four speed box and great lines will turn heads at any event. Given the car's rarity and history (we believe there are only two surviving two-seat AEGs) it is an obvious choice for the collector who loves all things Austin Seven, but craves something a little different from the many standard tourers and box saloons out there, but for very similar money. Sold with a large history file, photographic record and handbook she is ready to drive away, show or compete in club events. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Recent restoration, paintwork good, paint flat on bonnet top. Interior re-trimmed to high standard. Hood in excellent order. New tyres. Starts and drives well.

1929 Austin Seven 'Chummy' Tourer Registration Number: SV 9203 First Registered:15-07-1929 Mileage: TBC Engine Size: 858cc Colour: Blue Engine Number: M91675 Chassis Number: A94072 V5C present The Austin ''Seven'' was introduced in 1922 and remained in production until 1939. Almost 300,000 were built, of which 10,000 are known to survive worldwide. Built at Longbridge, Birmingham, it was intended to provide affordable four-wheel transport for the working man and his family. The earliest models had a 696cc engine and a three-speed crash gearbox, with a wheelbase of six feet three inches. It was available only as an open tourer with just enough room for two adults and two small children. This type of body was and is known as a ''Chummy''. The Chummy has long been a firm favourite with Bugatti and Bentley owners usually favouring them over their exotic stable. Eligible for VSCC and light car events they serve as a highly thought of entry to trials , hill climbs and driving tests. Or the perfect car for a summers evening ramble to the local pub. The current owner has informed us that this example was very much a daily driver and consequently in good, usable mechanical condition and contains much originality so popular now with pre-war car owners. Paintwork is generally very presentable as is the interior, instrumentation and lighting are correct, with the added benefit of a modern indicator system . The hood is clean and the hood mechanism works as it should and sitting on period style tyres in good order. For those enthusiasts who would like to own a more patinated but sound Chummy, this one is for you. Prices have held up well for nice examples with 20k often being achieved in sales . One recently sold at Bonhams Beaulieu sale this year for an astounding £36,000. Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot. Predominantly original car. Repainted later. Some chips and crazing to paintwork. Seats re-trimmed in Rexine. Very good chrome-work. Good tyres. Starts and drives well.

Original vintage advertising poster for Jack Leon and his all Star Broadcasting Orchestra on Southsea South Parade Pier Deck Bandstand. Fair condition, clear tape across top and bottom margin, creases, tears, paper losses, small stains. County: UK, year of printing:1950s, designer: Unknown, size (cm): 77x50. Judah Leon Aronoff (to give him his birth name) was born in Kiev in 1905 but moved with his family to Antwerp the following year. He came to London in 1914, becoming a British citizen in 1929, having changed his name to Jack Leon. Although trained as a violinist, he gave this up in favour of conducting. His early dance band records, of which he made many, served as a prelude to the light orchestral performances that were to dominate his career. He recorded extensively for 'Mood Music' libraries and his recordings with the New Concert Orchestra are now becoming available to a new generation by way of compact disc. Although essentially a recording orchestra, it did occasionally broadcast. Jack Leon conducted his own orchestra throughout the forties and for much of the fifties, appearing regularly on 'Music While You Work' and later in 'Morning Music', for which he provided more than forty programmes. There was also an untitled light orchestral 'slot' at 7.15a.m to which Jack Leon and his orchestra regularly contributed. There is one surviving recording of this orchestra in the BBC Sound Archives which is a perfect testimony to its high standard of performance. Jack Leon's theatrical connections included the London Casino and the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, for which he was Musical Advisor. He also had a long association with the Prince of Wales Theatre, London as Musical Director. He was not particularly well-known as a composer but one composition of his that was very successful was 'Viva Villa" written under the pseudonym of Stephen-Fonora. He moved to Glasgow in 1956 to take up the appointment of conductor of the BBC Scottish Variety Orchestra, a position he was destined to hold for ten years, broadcasting several times every week. He retired (albeit very reluctantly) from the BBC in 1966 and soon reformed his own orchestra for broadcasting. Early in 1967 he was given a series of broadcasts in 'Breakfast Special'. Sadly, after completing only a few recordings he collapsed in the street in Glasgow having suffered a heart attack from which he died, aged only 61, on 10th March 1967.
