FROM THEN TO YOU - THE BEATLES CHRISTMAS RECORD 1970 LP (ORIGINAL UK PRESSING ON APPLE). The original 1970 compilation of all The Beatles' christmas records released on Apple (no catalogue number, machine stamped Lyntone matrix LYN 2153/2154, unusually the matrix are stamped on the incorrect sides, i.e LYN 2153 is on side 2 rather than side 1). The record is in well presented VG+ condition - with fine and glossy playing surfaces, there are some rather light and minor surface markings that never extend deeper than this. The sleeve is in VG+ condition with some creasing though no rips or tears.

QUARRYMEN BUSINESS CARD. Original business card c1957 advertising the services of The Quarry Men whose members (Paul, George & John) went onto become The Beatles. This is a very early example of the business cards they had made with the music offered being "Country - Western - Rock 'n' Roll - Skiffle" and the address for correspondence being "Leosdene, Vale Road, Woolton, Liverpool" which was band member Nigel Walley's home address. The card measures 9cm x 6cm and is in excellent condition with just light discolouration to front and very minor foxing on rear. Provenance; The vendor was friends with Pete Shotton (one of the original members of the band) and this card, plus the other in the sale and the handwritten lyrics were gifted to the vendor by Pete not long before he died. Pete was a very close friend of John Lennon throughout his life.

THE BEATLES - YESTERDAY AND TODAY ('BUTCHER COVER') - 1ST STATE - ORIGINAL STEREO PRESSING (CAPITOL ST-2553). The holy grail for the avid Beatles collector, a genuine original US stereo 1st state Yesterday And Today featuring the most controversial sleeve design of all time! The sleeve is presented in strict VG condition. The image on the front is extremely clean, crisp and sharp clearly showing that this is a true first state. The reverse is in very clean order too, showing just a few light scuff marks. There is a seam split along the bottom edge which runs for approx 2 to 3cm. The sleeve measures 12 4/8" horizontally (indicating that this is a genuine 'untrimmed' copy) and 12 4/8" precisely vertically. This copy was printed at Capitol's Scranton plant indicated by the 2 next to the RIAA logo on the reverse. Elsewhere on the reverse, all the text is sharp and clean, there is a light paper tear on the left hand side. PLASTIC ONO BAND - GIVE PEACE A CHANCE - UK 7" DEMO (APPLE 13). Scarcely seen original UK demo 'Apple Custom Recording' of Give Peace A Chance c/w Remember Love. Unlike EMI/Parlophone, Apple didn't produce dedicated 'demonstration' 45s at this period (1969). The few titles which required advance promotion copies were the white labelled discs such as this one (the first few of the press) which would then have Apple labels applied, often with typed or handwritten labels. The record is in VG condition with light surface and scuff markings to the playing surfaces, perhaps which are moreover noted on the B side. The paper label on the B side is detached, with the white paper label underneath. Matrix/Mother/Stampers: APPLE 13 A-1 1 G & APPLE 13 B-1 1 G with KT tax code machine stamped on both sides. AIN'T SHE SWEET - ATLANTIC RECORDING STUDIOS ACETATE RECORDING (ATCO 64C 7884X). Incredible piece of Beatles history with this single sided acetate recording of Ain't She Sweet from 1964. In January 1964, ATCO (who leased the rights from Polydor to market four of the eight Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers recordings), hired drummer Bernard Purdie and guitarist Cornell Dupree to overdub parts for the songs they had acquired from Polydor. This overdubbed version is best identified by the drum triplets heard just before the guitar solo. There are also drum triplets (roll) before each verse and extra hi-hat in the bridge that is not heard on the original released recording. There is also some echo (or compression) that was added over the original recording. It is believed this acetate was cut as a reference disc to approve the overdubs and is likely the only one in existence. With printed Atlantic Recording Studios white label (their New York address printed) with '64C 7884X' hand written). The playing surface (a 7" recording issued on a unique acetate disc measuring just under 10") is in G condition. There are many surface marks and some light scratches - the record plays through well with only light surface noise though note there are a few skips. Housed with original audiodiscs audio devices sleeve in Ex condition and the original US LP cover (ATCO 33-169) in neat Ex condition (no record).

Issued with the striking white labels and black text stating 'Long Playing Test Record Not For Sale', the engineer has 'signed off' side 1 with side 2 contains some blue pen markings on the label. Record 1 (side 1) is in extremely fine Ex condition showing just a couple of very light and faint hairline markings that are really only noted under intense LED lighting. XEX 605-1 matrix with LPFB 2 machine stamped on the non-playing side. Record 2 is in VG+ condition with a few light and minor surface markings which are never heavier in nature. XEX 606-1 matrix with LPFB 2 machine stamped on the reverse. Housed with original Emitext inners which are both stamped '7 JUL 1966' (almost a month before the original UK release date). Also housed with a slightly earlier company 'sealed by quality control' white sleeve (stamped 21 OCT 1965 and is believed to be for the New Lost City Ramblers LP Rural Delivery No. 1) and with some correspondence between a previous owner and Bonhams.

A pair of Blue John columnar table lamps, 19th century and later, the sectional tapering shafts with square tops and stepped square section plinths, later twin light electrical fitments above, with pleated fabric shades, the Blue John 48cm high, height overall 71cm There is only one place where ‘Blue John’, a rare and precious colour banded form of fluorspar, is mined: a single hill in Castleton, Derbyshire. The mineral’s unusual name is said to derive from the French ‘bleu jaune’ which translates to ‘blue yellow’ - referring to its lustrous jewel tones. Another, more local, theory is that the term ‘Blue John’ was used by miners to distinguish it from zinc ore, known as ‘Black Jack’. Though prized for their decorative appeal, fluorspars such as Blue John have long been appreciated for their more functional qualities too. The Roman poet Martial, writing towards the end of the first century AD, for example claimed that wine tasted better when consumed from a ‘murrine’ cup. ‘Murra’ has been identified with fluorspar, and was introduced to the Romans by Pompey the Great after his expeditions in the East (possibly a variety found in Persia, present day Iran) circa 62 AD. Due to its fragility, fluorspar is often heated in the oven with a coating of (pine) resin, in order to stabilise the crystals after the mineral is mined. This longstanding manufacturing process may have accounted for the added aroma referred to by Martial. The mineral was so popular in Ancient Rome that, as naturalist and historian Pliny tells us, Emperor Nero himself apparently paid one million sesterces for a cup. Two Roman drinking vessels made of similar fluorspars are held in the collection of the British Museum (the Barber Cup and the Crawford Cup).In the 18th century, Blue John mining for the decorative arts was in full swing. References to the material can for example be found in the letters of Matthew Boulton, who regularly used the mineral to adorn his opulent ormolu works of art.
