RAMSAY RICHARD REINAGLE, RA (1775-1862) PORTRAIT OF WILLIAM STRUTT, FRS (1756-1830) seated full length at a table holding compasses, signed and dated R R Reinagle, RA 1828, further inscribed on a letter with the sitter's name and address (William Strutt St Helens Derby) and dated again (on a document) 1828, oil on canvas, 212 x 146cmThe sitter was the eldest son of innovator and entrepreneur Jedediah Strutt (1726-1797) of Belper, Derbyshire, one of the leading figures in the Industrial Revolution. Similarly gifted William Strutt benefited from the excellent education made possible by his father's success. An architect and engineer, he designed the Derby Infirmary, a building remarkable for its early incorporation of fireproof construction, innovative heating and ventilation. He was also an early exponent of the use of iron framed structures in buildings after Belper North Mill was destroyed by fire in 1803. His construction of another, the round mill, reflects the influence of Bentham's concept of a panopticon. A leading member of the Midlands Enlightenment, he was one of the group of men of exceptional ability including Erasumus Darwin that founded the Derby Philosophical Society. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1817, his proposers including James Watt and Marc Isambard BrunelLined in probably the mid 20th c, the varnish requiring a clean, one or two light scratches mainly lower right. In the original fine gilt wood and composition frame with sanded slip

A rare copy of the First Edition Beano Annual published before the appearance of Dennis The Menace, the 1940 Beano book was issued around the outbreak of World War Two in 1939, it came a year after the weekly comic was first brought out by Dundee based D.C. Thompson in July 1938. The annual was published in relatively small numbers and it is extremely difficult to find a better copy than this one (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The overall condition of this annual is very good. The cover is bright, clean and unmarked which is partly due to the fact the vendor, who was the original owner, cover it in brown paper when he first got it. The corners are slightly bumped and there is a very small rip +/- 1 cm to the leading edge of the front cover and a 2 cm surface rip to the spine on the front cover. On the back cover there are brown marks to the bookends and the pages are browned commensurate with age. On the frontispiece the box that says “This book belongs to” has been filled in in pencil and opposite is the price of 2s 6d also in pencil. On page 25 there is a slight stain +/- 5 cm in length but this is light and in the margin (not covering text or picture). There is a similar mark on page 31, stain mark roughly the size of a thumb on page 34 reflected on page 35, on pages 66 and 67 there are slight stains some of which are on the text but the text is still clearly visible. On page 81 there are two tears at the bottom right hand corner both of +/- 5 cm, a slight stain on page 97 and small black fingerprint (not on text). The binding is tight and some of these marks may be able to be cleaned off. Overall we consider this book to be in very good condition. A similar copy was sold last year and this is definitely in better condition.
William Darling MacKay, "Winter Feeding", signed with initials and with label verso from The Fine Art Society dated 1985, 19th century, oil on canvas. 16 cm x 24 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The painting has a Fine Arts Society label verso dated 1985. The picture has been relined and this probably corresponds with that date. We have inspected the painting under a UV light and this has not revealed any restoration. Beneath the main stand of trees there is a semi circular mark on the paintwork and also above the sheep. As the UV light does not reveal any overpainting this must simply be part of the original composition. The painting is perhaps a little dirty but is in generally in good order. The frame is a late Victorian period frame, it does have a significant loss to one corner, it has also had some overpainting and some minor scratches and scuffs.
Two Chinese export bowls, 19th century the smaller example in famille rose pattern of a garden scene of flowering peony and rock work, the other in famille verte with floral sprigs beneath garlands. 20.5 cm and 26 cm respectively. CONDITION REPORT: The smaller famille rose bowl appears to be free from any obvious chips or hairline cracks. The rockwork looks a little faded on the exterior and there is a light diagonal patch of rubbing within the fence. The remainder of the coloured enamels all appear to be intact and in good order. The bowl rings out nicely when lightly tapped. The famille verte bowl has been restored and the interior and exterior show that a quarter of the body has been oversprayed and repainted. Other than the restoration there are no other rim chips or hairline cracks. The bowl rings out nicely when lightly tapped.
