Lhoyd Gentleman: corrected, augmented, and continued out of Records and best approoved Authors, by David Powel Doctor in divinitie, 1st edition, [Imprinted at London by Rafe Newberie and Henrie Denham, 1584], pp.[14],22,1-48,65-356,365-401,[10], title within decorative woodcut border (torn to lower third with loss, and repaired), woodcut illustrations to letterpress including portraits & shields, text mostly in black letter, few initials and one shield hand painted, occasional old marginalia, D1 torn to fore-edge blank margin (with slight loss to marginal note), lacking 13 leaves of text including last leaf of 1st gathering, F1-8, 2C3-2C6 and also final blank, some dust-soiling, light dampstaining and few marks, 19th century marbled endpapers with split hinges, late 17th/early 18th century blind panelled calf, rebacked, board corners worn, small 4to STC 4606, ESTC S121940, Sabin 40914. The first printed history of Wales, it was probably first written in Latin rather than Welsh (the original is not known). This English version was assembled and translated by Humphrey Llwyd from various Welsh sources and expanded by David Powell. "A special interest in this work for American collectors consists in its relation of the most ancient 'Voyage and Discovery of the West Indies, performed by Madoc, the sonne of Owen Guined, prince of North Wales, anno 1170'" (Sabin).
