America.- Schoolcraft (Henry R.) Information, respecting the History, Condition and Prospects of the Indian Tribes of the United States, vol.1-5 only (of 6), second edition, half-titles, engraved additional titles, 274 engraved or lithographed maps, plates and plans on 272 sheets, mostly after Capt. Seth Eastman, including several of Native American artefacts of which many printed in colours with a few finished by hand and 2 plates of the Cherokee alphabet, some maps folding, with all plates as listed but for plate 9 'Comparison of North and South American Mounds' (not issued) and plate 29 'Map of the Creek Country in 1790' in vol.5, light foxing in vol.4 & 5, 2 leaves in vol.3 frayed at edges, contemporary half red morocco, spines gilt in compartments with tribal motifs, g.e., a little rubbed, mostly to edges and joints, [Sabin 77855], 4to, Philadelphia, 1853-56.⁂ Comprehensive work on the Native American tribes, originally published in 1851 with several chromolithographed plates which were engraved for this edition. The plates of artefacts and antiquities are particularly interesting and important including weapons, costumes, domestic utensils, housing, religion, pictographs etc. A sixth and final volume was published in 1857.

Presbyterian minister of Rugby.- Nalton (James) Twenty Sermons Preached Upon Several Texts, first edition, title within double-rule border, woodcut initials and headpieces, with blank f. a4, 7pp. advertisements, with an additional 44ff. (sig. P1-V4) following T4, light spotting or browning, ink inscription to title, bookplate to pastedown, contemporary calf, lower cover detached, cracking to upper joint, lower cover detached, [Wing N123], 8vo, by R.H. and M.S. for Dorman Newman and are to be sold at his shop, 1664.⁂ Rare, ESTC lists 4 copies only (not in BL). Nalton (c.1600-1662) served as a minister of Rugby from 1632 to 1642 when he lost his position, possibly on account of his signing a petition in protest at the appointment of a master to Rugby grammar school. He was well-connected in non-conformist circles and the passion with which he delivered his sermons earned him the nickname of "the weeping prophet".Provenance: M. H. Bloxam (bookplate).

Puritanism.- Vestments controversy.- A Briefe Examination for the Tyme, of a certaine declaration, lately put in print in the name and defence of certaine Ministers in London, refusyng to weare the apparell prescribed by the lawes and orders of the Realme, first edition, black letter, woodcut initials, title a little soiled with margins frayed and small portion of restoration at gutter, a few ff. closely shaved, affecting some text and headlines, E1-D4 with restoration and repair to upper corner and fore-margin with some loss to text, light foxing, extensive notes to rear endpapers, ink inscription in an old hand to 2*2 "The solicitours of these orders were bluddy persecutours", bookplate, 19th century roan, spotted, rubbing to extremities, [STC 10387], small 4to, [In Powles Churchyarde by Richarde Iugge, printer to the Queenes Maiestie, [1566]]⁂ Rare, we can trace no copy at auction since 1979. The vestments controversy was ostensibly concerning clerical dress but grew to encompass the notion of nonconformity in church practices. The debate reached a peak in 1566 with the publication of Robert Crowley's A Briefe Discourse Against the Outwarde Apparel of the Popishe Church to which this is a response commissioned by (and sometimes attributed to) Archbishop Matthew Parker. It includes one of the earliest descriptions of Hadrian's Wall. The sixth century British monk Gildas settled in Brittany, where he founded the monastery of Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys. Annotated by a bluestocking.- [Swift (Jonathan)] Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World... by Captain Lemuel Gulliver, 4 parts in 2 vol., first edition, Teerink's 'B' edition, engraved frontispiece in second state with vertical chain-lines (small hole to inner margin), 6 engraved plates, titles within double-rule borders, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, occasional light marginal worming, light foxing and occasional browning, ink ownership inscription to title and over 20 marginal annotations in the same hand, 1 or 2 annotations shaved, early 19th century tree calf, vol.1 upper joint split and upper cover becoming loose, spine ends chipped, light rubbing to extremities, [Teerink 291(B); Rothschild 2108], 8vo, for Benj. Motte, 1726.⁂ An attractive copy of Swift's most famous work with annotations by a blue stocking. The volumes are inscribed by Elizabeth Smith, dated June 7th 1806, possibly Elizabeth Smith (1776 - August 1806), the translator, linguist, Biblical and Oriental scholar. Whether this particular Elizabeth Smith or not, the annotator is clearly exceptionally well-read and makes reference to Plato's Republic, Homer, Virgil, the Book of Job, More's Utopia, Pope's Dunciad, Whiston's New Theory of the Earth, Isaac Newton, Edmund Halley and the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. She also identifies some contemporary references and is generally effusive in her praise of the work.

Love (1618-1651), a Presbyterian preacher, became embroiled in the 1651 plot to restore Charles II to the throne. He was arrested, charged with high treason, tried and found guilty before the high court of justice (at the trial Love was represented by Matthew Hale). Following the verdict Love's wife sent multiple petitions to parliament whilst also sending a number of affectionate letters to her husband, both of which became popular in Presbyterian Royalist circles following Love's execution. The first item here is a short satiric theatrical verse by Robert Wild with only 4 copies recorded on ESTC.Provenance: M. H. Bloxam (bookplate).

Ostensibly published posthumously, The Voice of the Dead to Living is a short spiritual work concluding with a hymn. Lucas refers to two local figures, an Elizabeth Moor and "Mr. Jeneway, both referred to as Saints. The date given on the spine is 1689 but it is likely later as the earliest title with A. Bettesworth at the Red Lion in the imprint recorded by ESTC is 1698. A small printed note at the conclusion of the work gives a good idea of the limited nature of the print run: "Friendly reader: If that these weighty Considerations should be reckoned not worth laying out one Penny, be pleased to Read it Gratis, keep it Clean, and Return it to Morrow."
