BOW CLARA: (1905-1965) American Actress who starred in Wings (1927), the first film to be awarded an Academy Award for Best Picture. An excellent vintage signed and inscribed sepia 8 x 10 photograph of The It Girl in a head and shoulders pose. Signed in dark fountain pen ink to a light area at the base of the image. Neatly and lightly mounted to a folio page removed from an album. VG The present photograph was originally included (along with thirty-six others) in a folio calf leather bound presentation album which was one of just fourteen (as far as our research indicates) that were presented to the individual members of a delegation of British journalists who visited America for a two month tour in 1928. Funded by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the objective of the tour was to improve Anglo-American relations and the presentation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at the Roosevelt Hotel on 7th November 1928 (just over six months before the first Oscar was presented at the very same venue) was a major highlight of the tour. The album from which the present photograph was extracted had been presented to F. Lawrence Johnson, a journalist associated with the Northeastern Daily Gazette, and the photograph bears an inscription to him.
AUTOGRAPHS: A fine plain white handheld fan with ivory sticks, plain ivory guards and a brass loop attached to the pivot pin, individually signed by 21 famous men and women, most associated with art and literature, comprising Blanche Lindsay, Dorothy Tennant (signed Dorothy Stanley following her marriage to Henry Morton Stanley), Frances Hodgson Burnett, John Hare, Alfred C. Lyall, Henry Thompson, William E. H. Lecky, Garnet Wolseley FM, Princess Helena, Henry James, Lewis Morris, George H. Boughton, Lawrence Alma-Tadema and his wife Laura Alma-Tadema, Edward Poynter, Arthur Sullivan, Edward Burne-Jones, Bret Harte, E. F. Benson (signed in full, Edward Frederic Benson), Sarah Grand and Annie S. Swan. All have signed with their names alone in dark fountain pen inks, most to individual leaves of the fan. An attractive and unusual presentation. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, about VG
PANKHUSRT EMMELINE: (1858-1928) English Leader of the Suffragette Movement. An excellent vintage signed sepia 8 x 10 photograph of Pankhurst in a head and shoulders pose. Photograph by Underwood & Underwood of New York. Signed ('E. Pankhurst') with her name alone in fountain pen ink to a light area at the base of the image. Signed photographs of Pankhurst of this size and quality are rare and desirable. A couple of light, minor corner creases and a few small pinholes to the upper and lower borders, none of which affect the image or signature, otherwise VGIn 1913 Pankhurst had initially been prevented from entering the United States when she landed at Ellis Island. The activist had travelled to America to undertake a lecture tour, but officials were initially concerned that her presence in the country, and 'moral turpitude', would prove inflammatory. The original decision of the Immigration Commissioners was reversed after President Woodrow Wilson sought assurances that she would not preach militancy during her stay in the country. Consequently, Pankhurst stated, 'This is a great victory… and good advertisement'. Despite the assurances the suffragette provided it is interesting to note that in the present image the defiant Pankhurst proudly displays a suffragette memorial ribbon around her neck.
BADEN-POWELL ROBERT: (1857-1941) British Lieutenant General who, in 1899 during the Second Boer War in South Africa, successfully defended the city in the Siege of Mafeking. Later Baden-Powell founded the Scout Movement. Autograph Manuscript signed, with his initials BP, three pages, 8vo, Waiho Gorge, Westland, New Zealand, n.d. (1934), in pencil, on the printed stationery of the Glacier Hotel at the Franz Josef Glacier. Baden-Powell’s manuscript, with several corrections throughout, is entitled On a Glacier and states, in part, ‘As I write this I am sitting on a bluff on the shoulder of one of the great mountains which rear their snowclad heads high above me on every side. In front and below me runs a wide valley which is filled from side to side with a vast white sheet of ice; not the sort of ice you know at home but a jumbled mess of blocks and waves and walls of ice. It is a glacier, or frozen stream, a mile wide and twelve miles long from where it starts…..I can see three tiny moving specks some two miles away on the glacier. These are my two daughters mountain climbing with their guide. Dressed in breeches and puttees and heavy iron-shod climbing boots and armed with ice axes for cutting steps in the ice and with goggles to escape the glare of the snow, they love the excitement of clambering over those great slippery crags…..As for me I am taking it easy, sitting on my bluff and gazing over this mighty frozen torrent. There is a steady rumbling hum in the air, just like the roar of the traffic in London as you hear it sitting in Hyde Park. This rumbling is the sound made by that vast mass of ice slowly, slowly grinding its way over the rocks and stones beneath it. Watching it and standing on it you can perceive no movement, but moving it is all the same…..It behaves just as a stream of water does in running down a steep water course, the difference being that it is all a solid block of ice….’ The final page is lightly and neatly laid down to a page most likely removed from a scrapbook and the first two pages are neatly laid down to the left edges alongside. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, about VG The present manuscript was most likely written in preparation for Baden-Powell’s book Scouting Round the World (1935) which records the Chief Scout’s round-the-world voyage undertaken in 1934 in the company of his wife, Olave Baden-Powell, and their two daughters. The book features a description of his observations as his daughters climb the Franz Josef Glacier.
MCLUHAN MARSHALL: (1911-1980) Canadian Philosopher & Intellectual who coined the terms 'global village' and 'surfing' and also predicted the World Wide Web almost thirty years before it was invented. A.L.S., Marshall McLuhan, one page, 4to (onion skin notepaper), Toronto, 24th February 1963, to [Neville] Braybrooke. McLuhan announces 'It was a happy inspiration that made you send me The Idler!' and continues 'I have read it with much enjoyment and shall now seek out your other writings. As a devoted student of T. S. Eliot I had of course read your volume for his 70th birthday'. The philosopher further informs Braybrooke that 'Frank Kermode has written me to say that he has suggested to the editors of Encounter that they start a debate in a series of articles concerning the themes of the Galaxy' and asks if he would like to participate, adding 'Roland Penrose of the Institute of Contemporary Arts has written to say that the Galaxy has given them the idea for a 1965 show on the Extensions of Man: Technologies seen as extensions of our organic being, having immediate as well as persistent psychic and social effects. Thus electromagnetic technologies are extensions of our central nervous systems as much as others of our bodies. i.e. E.S.P.' McLuhan concludes by stating that he hopes to come to England in the summer to discuss the matter with Penrose, 'and it would be a great disappointment if you were not there at the same time'. A letter of good content, not least for its references to two of McLuhan's most famous works. Some light overall creasing, about VG Neville Braybrooke (1923-2001) English Poet, Writer, Editor, Literary Critic and Publisher. The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man (1962) is a pioneering study in the fields of oral culture, print culture, cultural studies and media ecology in which McLuhan prophesised the web technology experienced today when he stated 'The next medium, whatever it is-it may be the extension of consciousness-will include television as its content, not as its environment, and will transform television into an art form. A computer as a research and communication instrument could enhance retrieval, obsolesce mass library organization, retrieve the individual's encyclopaedic function and flip into a private line to speedily tailored data of a saleable kind'. Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man (1964) is a more widely known work by McLuhan and is regarded as a pioneering study in media theory. Dismayed by the way people approached and used new media such as television, McLuhan famously argued that in the modern world 'we live mythically and integrally ... but continue to think in the old, fragmented space and time patterns of the pre-electric age'.
FAMOUS MEN & WOMEN: Selection of signed pieces, letterheads, a few signed album pages etc., by various famous men and women, mainly entertainers, including Eugen Sandow, Charles Beresford, Mark Hambourg & family members, John Hare, Gipsy Smith, Wilson Barrett (A.Q.S.), Charles Santley, Emma Albani, Dan Leno, Julia Neilson, Cyril Maude, Hayashi Tadasu (2), Ellis Jeffreys, Lewis Waller, Wilhelm Backhaus, Ralph Lynn etc., together with fifteen vintage unsigned postcard photographs of some of the signatories. NEWTON ISAAC: (1642-1727) English Physicist, Mathematician & Astronomer. Rare, dark ink signature ('Is. Newton') on a slim oblong 4to (10.5 x 2.5) piece removed from the head of a document, n.p., n.d. (annotated 1718 in pencil in an unidentified hand to one corner, and the verso bearing the date 3rd May 1718). The fragment has evidently been taken from a page of a financial ledger and is headed with the letters N.O.P. at the head. Newton's signature appears in the left margin, with his name written alongside in another hand, along with various figures, including the sum of £500 which is assigned to Newton. Above Newton's signature appears that of Sir John Norris and to the verso there are three further signatures, identified as Francis de Lizsew (?), Elizabeth Lee and William Lamb. With some light age toning and a few minor tears and very small areas of paper loss to the edges, none of which significantly affect Newton's signature. G In describing the present lot for this catalogue, the fragment was removed from the matt in which it has been previously presented by a collector. The signature could easily be replaced to be displayed this way, in a cream matt beneath an engraving of Newton to an overall size of 7.5 x 11.5. Our research, in the limited time available, has found no immediate connection between Newton and the other individuals named alongside him in the present lot. It is likely that Norris was the British Admiral of the Fleet Sir John Norris (1670/71-1749) who had joined the Board of Admiralty in March 1718. Both Newton and Norris were also involved in the Longitude Act of 1714.

The signatures appear on various pages throughout the entire book, some of the pages are multiple signed, and many have added their positions within Edison’s company, or their military ranks, beneath their signatures. The book is signed and inscribed to a fly leaf by Henry Lawrence Davisson, a sales and service manager with the Edison Company, on the occasion of the birth of his first child, ‘The first present to Henry Lawrence Davisson Jr., from his Dad, Dec. 14 – 1911, Thursday, 210 West 4 St., New York, “Dave”’. Together with a second unsigned hardback edition of The Boy’s Life of Edison by Meadowcroft, published by Harper & Brothers, New York, 1921. The binding of the First Edition is loose, the spine largely detached and with extensive sellotape repairs, and the inside pages with light age wear, occasional sellotape stains and small tears to the edges etc. FR to about G, 2 Provenance: To celebrate the occasion of the birth of his first son, Henry Lawrence Davisson (affectionately known as ‘Harry’) obtained the present copy of the recently published book and duly circulated it amongst his colleagues at the Edison Storage Battery Company for their signatures. Davisson was also fortunate enough to obtain the signatures of the company’s hierarchy, including Thomas Edison himself, as well as some of the more distinguished visitors to the company over the next three years. Harry joined the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I and, as a Captain in the Engineer Corps and in command of troops, he sailed for France on the USS Tenadores a day after the armistice. It is evident that the book accompanied Harry to France as the signatures of various officers and senior NCOs are also included. Some other signatures were further added to the book over the coming years and an interesting, more detailed history of the book, its previous owners and some of the signatories, as written and researched by the vendor, is included in the lot.
