Ca. 4000 - 2000 BC Egyptian/Bactrian Alabaster Ritual CupThis object was carved from a monolith of calcite (alabaster) that is similar in colour and appearance to the stone commonly used by Egyptian sculptors for luxury tableware. Alabaster, a light-colored, calcareous stone quarried from the Iranian Plateau, had strong connections in the ancient world to religion and specifically the gods. For example, in the site of Kultepe-Kanes, a huge burial mound, there were many disc-shaped alabaster idols, naked alabaster goddesses, and lion figures. We also know that alabaster was a precious material, widely traded in the region from the 4th millennium BC onward. Intact, Superb condition. 130mm; 400gr. Property of a British collector; acquired in the 1980s.All Items sold by Pax Romana Auctions come with professional Certificate of Authenticity and FREE domestic and international shipping.

CA. 200 – 400 AD. Rare Roman Legionary sword of Spatha type.; broad parallel-sided spatha with convergent tip; rectangular-section tang at the shoulder developing to square-section at the upper end. Expertly cleaned and conserved to Museum quality. Size: 840mm; 590 grams. The Roman spatha was used in war and in gladiatorial fights. The spatha of literature appears in the Roman Empire in the 1st century AD as a weapon used by presumably Germanic auxiliaries and gradually became a standard heavy infantry weapon from the late 2nd Century onwards, relegating the gladius to use as a light infantryweapon. The spatha apparently replaced the gladius in the front ranks, giving the infantry more reach when thrusting. While the infantry version had a long point, versions carried by the cavalry had a rounded tip that prevented accidental stabbing of the cavalryman's own foot or horse. Provenance: From a London private collection, acquired on the UK art market in the 1980s. All Items sold by Pax Romana Auctions come with a professional Certificate of Authenticity and FREE domestic and international shipping.
