ENGLISH SCHOOL, 1800-1810 PORTRAIT OF AN OFFICER bust length, oil on panel, oval, 30 x 23cmThe style of the sitter's single breasted tunic and lace at the throat dates the present portrait to the first decade of the 19th century or thereabouts. SPOILUM (FL 1785-1805) PORTRAIT CAPTAIN GEORGE DELANOE, RN head and shoulders, in blue coat with gilt buttons, inscribed and dated verso Geo. Augustus Delanoe Capt. Royal Navy 1794, with inscription recto Captain Geo. Delanoe RN 1794 and further inscribed above opposite shoulder in another hand 'Lost his leg by a 32lb shot at the Mutiny of the Nore on June 10 1797 when in command of his Majesty's Ship Repulse 64 guns', oil on prepared cloth, oval, 41.5 x 33.5cmProvenance: By descent in the family of the sitter's mother to George Harnage of Cambridge. Sold with his faded and largely illegible handwritten 1p history of the events and a transcription. The present beautifully preserved portrait by the Chinese artist always known in the West as 'Spoilum' has all the hallmarks associated with his remarkable portraiture, mannerisms and technique. It is directly comparable to other bust length portraits of British and American merchants, captains and members of the HEIC. The support is the same "cheesecloth-like canvas mounted on laminated wood stretchers" (Crossman, plt 10, right) and the original gilt frame matches that of Spoilum's portraits of two unidentified men (Crossman, plt 5 and plt 10, left).Captain George Augustus Delanoe, RN (1762-1802) was the son of John Delanoe of Guernsey and Dorothy Harnage (1726-1807, married 1758), 1st Lieutenant and Commander of HMS "Repulse" a third rate ship of the line of sixty four guns. During the Mutiny at the Nore on June 10th 1797, Delanoe lost a leg by a shot fired from another vessel whilst escaping from the mutineers. He was awarded a pension and later promoted to Captain although he did not live long enough to assume the rank. Delanoe was buried at Lynsted, Kent. He was unmarried.(References are to C L Crossman, The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, Woodbridge 1991, Chapter 1).++In very good entirely original condition. Slight instability of medium lifting and cracked in places most noticeable when held at an oblique angle to the light, varnish discoloured with age.

FOLLOWER OF THOMAS HICKEY PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN small full length in black stock, red coat, yellow breeches and waistcoat, his tricorn on a cannon before a tent in Indian landscape with a fort in the distance, a letter in his left hand addressed J Wallerich Bombay, oil on canvas, oval, 44 x 35cmThe sitter, whose identity may be established on removal of the 'strengthening' of the signature would, it seems safe to assume, have either been a civilian of the Bombay Presidency or an Officer of the same in undress. The tent, a reference to service in the field, cannon and fort taken together point to his involvement in some way with a siege operation. There were several such sieges in the first Anglo-Maratha war, 1775-1782, including that of the great fortress of Gwalior in 1780.++The support somewhat brittle possibly as a consequence of damp and with light overall craqueleur, some retouching, the inscription on the envelope strengthened and somewhat indistinct and difficult to decipher, on what maybe the original stretchers and in contemporary or near contemporary gadrooned gilt frame

BYRON SILVER. A GEORGE III GADROONED OGEE SAUCE BOAT Byron crest, 14cm h, maker WS, probably William Skeen, London 1764, 16ozs A note on provenance: Given the date of 1764, the present sauce boat was almost certainly supplied to William, 'The Wicked' 5th Lord Byron (1722-1798), Admiral John 'Foulweather Jack' Byron (1723-1786) or either of their two brothers. Since the assay (date) letter changes each year on 29th May it must have been hallmarked between June 1764 and May 1765. The absence of definitive evidence does not preclude the tantalising possibility therefore that this good quality London made rococo silver sauce boat was commissioned by the 'Wicked Lord' at around the very time he infamously killed his kinsman and neighbour William Chaworth in a drunken duel fought with swords in a room at the 'Star and Garter' Inn, London on January 26, 1765.++Light wear, neat old solder repair to base, near foot. The crest contemporary
