Crawhall (Joseph) A Beuk O'Newcassel Sangs, presentation copy from the author to his daughter, xi, 131pp., list of subscribers, woodcut illustrations throughout, 1p. list of books by Crawhall and 2pp. press notices at rear, A.L. initialled mounted on front free endpaper, order form/prospectus tipped in at rear, contemporary newspaper review tipped-in to front paste-down, some pencil marks to title and back free endpaper, original cloth-backed printed boards, slightly rubbed, a little light soiling, square 12mo, Newcastle upon Tyne, Mawson, Swan, & Morgan, 1888. *** Inscription reads "For my beloved daughter Elspeth Challoner." The letter affixed to the front free endpaper, dated July 25 1895, is to the publishers; it thanks them for the trouble they have taken over the 'Sangs' and concerns prices for this and his future work, 'Impresses Quaint'. The order form at the end is addressed in his hand to his son-in-law, Fred Challoner.
Crawhall (Joseph) [Sale Catalogue] of a Selected Portion of the Collection of Prints, Drawings, China, Arms, Armour, etc. of Joseph Crawhall Esq., 15pp., Elspeth Challoner's copy, with pencil annotations and prices realised throughout, original wrappers, a little very light browning, 8vo, Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, Friday 22nd June, 1894.
Crawhall (Joseph) [Sale Catalogue] of a Selected Portion of the Library of Joseph Crawhall Esq ... Comprising Works on Angling, Books Illustrated by T. Bewick, His Tool-Box ... Twenty-Four Albums of Humourous Sketches by Mr. Crawhall ... , 23pp., a few pencil annotations, light browning, ink inscription to title, small tears to first 2ff., modern cloth, morocco gilt label to upper cover, 8vo, Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, Saturday 23rd June, 1894. *** Includes the sale of Thomas Bewick's tool-box, lot 239, given to Crawhall by Miss Isabella Bewick.
Crawhall (Joseph) Chaplets from Coquet-side, one of 16 extra-illustrated copies for presentation by the author, [iv], 83pp., [3pp.], 44 woodcuts in the text, including 19 hand-coloured, with 6 extra plates from Crawhall's 'Compleatest Angling Booke', 1859, tipped in, including etched portrait of Walton on India paper, 3 others etchings, 1 steel engraving and 1 woodcut, initialled postcard from Charles Keene and related newpaper cutting loosely inserted, some foxing, a little offsetting, contemporary straight-grain morocco-backed cloth, t.e.g., some staining to text margins, light soiling, [Westwood & Satchell p.69], 8vo, [Newcastle upon Tyne, Robert Robinson], 1873. *** The rarest of Crawhall's angling publications, one of an edition of only 16 extra-illustrated copies from a total printing of 100. Postcard from Keene asks Crawhall to allow his friend, A.C. Stannus, "the Champion Irish Trout Fisher ... ", to enter one of his pictures of the Coquet into Crawhall's exhibition. This copy also has a woodcut vignette on p.33 which is coloured in red as well as blue. Crawhall made gifts of this book in both the standard edition and this limited extra-illustrated edition of 16. A curious mix of the old and new, 'Chaplets' contains several poems celebrating angling, comic pieces, anecdotes about Newcastle and a selection from his contributions to 'Newcastle's Fishers' Garlands'. The only rarer work is the unattainable single copy of 'Angling Quips and Sporting Skits'.
Crawhall (Joseph, editor) A Collection of Right Merrie Garlands for North Country Anglers, one of 50 on large paper, extra-illustrated copy, xvi, 312pp., [1p.], half-title, title printed in red and black, extra illustrations by F.M. Fenwick, 96 original full-page drawings, 107 original ink drawing vignettes and 1 original watercolour, some woodcut vignettes hand-coloured, bookplate of John George Fenwick, occasional light foxing, contemporary red morocco, gilt, g.e., very slightly rubbed, [Westwood & Satchell p.69], 8vo, Newcastle upon Tyne, George Rutland, 1864. *** Unique; an unusual association copy, profusely extra-illustrated. The additional drawings occupy the blank ff. of the book with vignettes illustrating the half-titles. These charming drawings are of fish, angling and river bank scenes. The watercolour is of an angling permit dated 1889. Fenwick was a close associate of Crawhall. Confusingly, the spine of this book carries a different title, 'Newcastle Fishers' Garlands'. Also confusing is the note opposite the title in the octavo edition saying "Fifty Copies printed on large paper". Interestingly, the limited large paper edition does not carry such a note.
Crawhall (Joseph) The Compleatest Angling Booke That Ever Was Writ, signed presentation copy from the author to Octavius Joseph Crawhall, second edition, one of 100 copies, ccxxxiii, [i], woodcut and wood-engraved vignettes and illustrations by the author, Joseph Crawhall III, James Guthrie and W. Chapman throughout, some hand-coloured, a little very light foxing, original blind-stamped calf, gilt, t.e.g., skilfully rebacked and repaired, [Westwood & Satchell p.69], 4to, Newcastle upon Tyne, Andrew Reid, 1881. *** Inscription reads "Octavius Joseph Crawhall. With the Author's kind regards. July.86." There were some additions and deletions made to text but mostly to illustrations, other material was rearranged.
Crawhall (Joseph) Crawhall's Chap-book Chaplets, presentation copy from the author to his daughter, individual ballads paginated separately, c.250pp., limited edition, printed on coloured paper, hand-coloured woodcut illustrations throughout, 2 hand-coloured Crawhall Christmas cards for 1883 tipped in to front and rear free endpapers, 'Pear's Soap' facsimile advertisement loosely inserted, 10pp. advertisements at end, occasional pencil annotations ?in Crawhall's hand, very light browning and foxing, final 2ff. with inner margin reinforced, original printed boards with hand-coloured vignettes, joints slightly weak, very slightly rubbed, dust-jacket, chipped and torn, small section of spine loose, 4to, London and New York, Field & Tuer, Simpkin, Marshall & Co. [&c.], 1883. *** A unique copy of an exceptional work, in a rare early dust-jacket. Ink inscription reads "For my beloved Daughter Elspeth. Nov.22.1883." Many of the woodcuts are labelled 'J.C.' or 'J.C. Junior', Crawhall II's son; also with notes probably in Crawhall's hand. Published just before 'Olde Ffrendes ... ', this shows real illustrative unity and marks a development in Crawhall's style; Crawhall's head and tail pieces are particularly strong and effective in this publication. Crawhall's books were printed incorporating the author's original woodblocks. This reflected Tuer's awareness that electrotype facsimiles would not do justice to the bold line and blackness of Crawhall's blocks. Tipped in are 2 Crawhall Christmas cards, a prospectus for this and 'Olde Ffrendes ... ' and for 'Walton's Pocket Booke', and a detailed press article describing the unique qualities of this book.
[Crawhall (Joseph)] The Gloamin' Buchte, [22pp.], 1883; Andrew Robinson, Stoney Bowes Esquire, 48pp., 1883; Ducks and Green Peas, 14pp., 1883; John Cunningham, 34pp., 1883, hand-coloured woodcut illustrations by the author throughout, occasional light browning and light soiling, original pictorial wrappers with hand-coloured vignettes, a little very light soiling, spines reinforced, some edges a little chipped, [Field & Tuer, Leadenhall Press], 4to (4). *** Four individual ballads and tales from 'Olde Tayles Newlye Relayted'.
Crawhall (Joseph) "Impresses Quaint", signed presentation copy from the author to his daughter, one of 300 copies, 100pp., woodcut illustrations by the author throughout, prospectus tipped in at front, list of books written by the author mounted on rear paste-down, related ephemera loosely inserted, small marginal tear to p.34, original cloth-backed pictorial printed boards, a little light soiling, slightly rubbed, 4to, Newcastle upon Tyne, Mawson, Swan, & Morgan, 1889. *** A fine association copy with several ink inscriptions which read "For my beloved Daughter Elspeth Crawhall Challoner. May 1889. Joseph Crawhall.", "With best wishes to Professor Felver [Crawhall's biographer] from Elspeth Crawhall Challoner. Grand-daughter of Joseph Crawhall. 1961.", and "With continuing pleasure to fellow aficionado Jeffrey Norton, (Professor) Charles S. Felver".
Crawhall (Joseph) Izaak Walton: His Wallet Booke, 120pp., [24pp.], one of 500 copies, abridged edition from 'The Compleat Angler' with 36 songs and poems taken from the fifth edition, hand-coloured woodcut illustrations by the author throughout, 24 blank ruled ff. entitled 'Fysshe Stories', linen pockets to pastedowns, a little light browning to title and final f., uncut, half vellum, gilt, ties, a little light soiling, [Horne 122], 8vo, Field & Tuer, and Sampson Low [&c.], Leadenhall Press, 1885.
Crawhall (Joseph) Izaak Walton: His Wallet Booke, signed presentation copy from the author to his daughter, one of 100 large paper copies, hand-coloured woodcut illustrations by the author throughout, linen pockets to pastedowns, as described in previous lot, 3 original poems in Crawhall's hand tipped in, 2pp. A.L.s from Crawhall to Elspeth and 6pp. A.L.s from Thomas Westwood to the author tipped in, pressed leaf preserved in tissue which Crawhall has lettered "from tree over Wordsworth's grave. 1895" loosely inserted in front pouch, related contemporary newspaper cuttings tipped in, copious ink inscriptions to the blank ruled pp. entitled 'Fysshe Stories', lacking associated woodblock, original half vellum, gilt, ties, light soiling, darkened, 4to, Field & Tuer, Leadenhall Press, 1885. *** Ink inscription to title reads "Elspeth Challoner from her father Joseph Crawhall. 1885". The story written on the blank ff., "My first 20-pounder", was written by Rev. Hugh Bellamy in 1895. Crawhall's letter reads "My darling Ess, Just a line to wish you many happy returns ... I wish you to accept "Olde Ffrendes" & the "Wallet booke" as birthday presents - Fred will get them from Tuer on presenting my note. I had a jolly long letter from Keene yesterday ... I'm keeping fairly well ... tho' I have my tumble down capers with this weary head - great longing for the old mother back, but I daren't say so for fear she hastens home - fact is we've lived far too much for each other ... ". He ends with a humourous self-portrait. Contains one of the boldest comic self-caricatures on p.90 where Crawhall depicts himself in tandem as two bulls dragging a ploughshare, taken from a Blake illustration to 'Jerusalem'. Although lacking the woodblock (it is thought there is only 1 copy remaining with it), this appears to be one of the best collectable copies of this work.
Crawhall (Joseph) A Jubilee Thought, presentation copy from the author to his daughter, [i], 77pp., one of 50 copies, hand-coloured woodcut illustrations throughout, 2pp. press notices at end, 2 Crawhall woodcuts plates tipped in to rear endpaper and paste-down, browning, light water-staining and foxing to paste-downs and endpapers, several ff. with edges chipped, title and final leaf reinforced at inner margin, 1f. loose, original half vellum, printed boards with hand-coloured vignettes, rebacked with original spine laid down, 4to, Newcastle upon Tyne, Mawson, Swan, & Morgan, 1887. *** Inscription reads "Elspeth Crawhall Challoner with her Father's Dear love. July. 1887." This book also appeared in the same size in black and white. Printed from the original blocks, this celebrates Victoria's Jubilee, and includes portraits of Sir Walter Raleigh, King Alfred, Raphael and the Madonna, and again, a self-caricature (p.54). This work displays well Crawhall's talent particularly for working in dialect or in the comic vein.
Crawhall (Joseph) Ye Loving Ballad of Lorde Bateman, To itte's owne Tune herein sette ffoorth, signed presentation copy from the author to his son-in-law, number 2 of only 15 copies printed ?on India paper, [15ff.], 2 woodcuts, including hand-coloured cut of the Crawhall coat of arms, 2ff. printed music, one inlaid as issued, 1f. of music spotted and with light water-staining, a little light browning, original morocco, rebacked, gilt spine, extremities slightly rubbed, 8vo, n.p., n.d. [?1860]. *** Crawhall's extremely scarce second book. Inscription reads "Joseph Crawhall 1860" to which has been added "to Frederick C.T. Challoner. October-14-1884." A note to the front free endpaper reads "4 copies on India printed - 6 d[itt]o. thick paper, 5 d[itt]o. 4to - 15 copies in all." Crawhall liked the cut at the beginning of a singer accompanied by piper enough to use it again and again in later books. Music was a central interest in his life and this produced some of his best illustrations. Although 15 copies were printed, only 13 copies were available seperately as two were bound in the copies of 'The Compleatest Angling Booke' presented to his wife and daughter Elspeth. In the copy of this book given to his wife he notes "the whole of the text and songs composed, written and printed by me". The plates in copper were done by his brothers George and Thomas, his sister Mary Elizabeth and William Chapman.
Crawhall (Joseph) Old Aunt Elspa's ABC, first edition, presentation copy from the author to his daughter, 21pp., [3pp.], hand-coloured woodcut illustrations by the author throughout, 3pp. advertisements at end, 4pp. prospectus for this work and original watercolour Valentine card for his daughter loosely inserted, a little light browning, original wrappers with hand-coloured woodcut vignettes, ink inscription to upper cover, drop-back box, light soiling, extremities a little rubbed and chipped, oblong 4to, Leadenhall Press, 1884. *** Very important association copy of this work. Inscription reads "For the original 'Auld Elspa' with the Author's dearest love." The inscription to the upper cover reads "Challoner". Felver's copy. The charming watercolour Valentine card loosely inserted shows Cupid standing forlorn with his bow and arrow on the ground, saying "Boo hoo! my occupation's gone. February 14th 188 one. For Elspeth Crawhall, Ambulance Certificate." 'Aunt Elspa' was a family term of endearment for Crawhall's daughter Elspeth. Refreshingly boisterous in comparison to much Victorian children's literature, this contains the usual self-caricature on p.15 with the author being chased by a termagant queen and the crow on the sheaf of wheat from the family crest.
Crawhall (Joseph) Old Aunt Elspa's Spelling [Bee], 21pp., [3pp.], woodcut illustrations throughout, 3pp. advertisements at end, hand-coloured Crawhall Christmas card for 1883 tipped in at end, light browning, original printed wrappers with woodcut vignettes, penny red stamp mounted on lower cover, rubbed and chipped, light soiling, drop-back box, oblong 4to, Newcastle upon Tyne, Field & Tuer [&c.], Leadenhall Press, 1884-5. *** Crawhall worked at great speed; he finished Aunt Elspa's ABC by June 5th 1884 and by July 21st he noted having finished the "last spelling Bee". With delightful illustrations, the usual self-caricature is absent, however it is likely the woman on p.2 is a caricature of his daughter Elspeth. There is also a caricature of Tuer on p.9, and the comic artist character on the back wrapper is believed to be either his son Joseph or one of his friends such as Guthrie. Charming and unusual, this must have provided relief from "the tedious gentility of so much Victorian literature for children" (Felver). There was a hand-coloured edition of this work produced costing 2/6d, where this cost 1 shilling.
Crawhall (Joseph) Olde Ffrendes Wyth Newe Faces, limited edition, individual ballads and tales paginated separately and printed on pink and blue paper, hand-coloured woodcut illustrations throughout, advertisement leaf at beginning, prospectus at end, a little light browning, upper hinge slightly weak, uncut, original half vellum, printed boards with hand-coloured vignettes, light soiling, slightly rubbed with a little loss of text at head of spine, 4to, London and New York, Field & Tuer, Simpkin, Marshall & Co. [&c.], 1883. *** By April 1883 Andrew Tuer and Crawhall were preparing to print 'Olde Ffrendes', and on June 9th his favourite daughter, Elspeth, to whom he dedicated many books, married Frederick Challoner. Published just after 'Chapbook Chaplets', this contains pen drawings by Crawhall II's son, also Joseph (1861-1913), related to the text, which seem to have been reproduced in electrotype. It is a charming and interesting book containing a variety of material including ballads, fairy tales, chapbook stories and comic farce.
Crawhall (Joseph) Olde Tayles Newlye Relayted, individual ballads and tales paginated separately, one of 25 hand-coloured copies of the limited trade edition, woodcut illustrations throughout, some light foxing, hinges weak, original pictorial cloth, slightly rubbed, 4to, [Field and Tuer], Leadenhall Press, [1883]. *** Pencil annotations to front and rear claim this is one of 25 copies hand-coloured by the author, although Felver states "the uneven quality of the colouring suggests it has been done by an amateur". Tuer was adept at re-using material and at appearing to remake commercial success; thus this contains the woodcuts from 'Chap-book Chaplets' and 'Olde Ffrendes ... '. The book contains old legends, stories and songs about Newcastle of the sort which deeply interested the people of the city.
