Leaving Cape Town in 1836, he traversed these regions in an ox wagon, and went through a large part of South West Africa arriving at Walvisch Bay almost exhausted with the difficulties of travel and want of water. He succeeded in obtaining a good collection of zoological and other specimens, many of which were at that time unknown to the scientific world. The volumes contain an account of the social condition of the Namaquas, Bushmen and Damaras.` Very good London Henry Colburn 1838

The folding map is foxed and strengthened with tape at all the folds, the first gathering in volume I is detached, apart from some light offsetting from the maps the contents are in very good condition. Mendelssohn (S.) South African Bibliography, 1:87-88. ‘Barrow was attached to the staff of the Earl of Macartney, one of the governors of the Cape Colony during the first occupation by the British. Barrow accompanied an expedition from Cape Town to Graaff-Reinet, and another to Namaqualand, and he gives an excellent description of the country traversed, particularly with regard to the botany and zoology of these regions. He provides significant evidence of the alleged brutality of the Boers to their slaves and Hottentot servants, and there is a description of the characteristics, habits, and customs of the various native races.’ Good London T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies 1801-1804

Mendelssohn (S.) South African Bibliography, 1.899. ‘Dr Lichtenstein was tutor to the son of Governor Janssens of the Cape Colony. Bushmen and Bechuanas are described and the information about the wild life and their natural surroundings is recorded in detail.’ Good London Printed for Henry Colburn 1815
Percival (Captain Robert) AN ACCOUNT OF THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE. 4to (295 x 230 mm) Containing An Historical View of its original Settlement by the Dutch, its Capture by the British in 1795, and the different Policy pursued there by the Dutch and British Government. Also a Sketch of its Geography, Productions, the Manners and Customs of the Inhabitants, &c. &c. Overall a good copy. As a captain in the Eighteenth or Royal Regiment of foot, Captain Percival took part in the first British Occupation of the Cape in 1795. Under General Craig he led the attack on the fortifications of Muizenberg, and was the first officer to reach Cape Town. He remained at the Cape for two years. His book was published after the second British occupation in 1805 when there was a renewed demand for more detailed knowledge about the new colony. Theal is very harsh on the book describing it as ‘one of the most unreliable that has ever been issued from the press,’ but it nevertheless provides much interesting detail of the Cape at the time of the first occupation. This copy is from the first issue with the split heading on page 247 ‘CAPE OF GO ODHOPE’ uncorrected. Good London Printed for C. and R. Baldwin 1804

Sparrman (Andrew) A VOYAGE TO THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE TOWARDS THE ANTARCTIC POLAR CIRCLE ROUND THE WORLD 4to (280 x 220 mm) But chiefly into the Country of the Hottentots and Caffres, from the year 1772 to 1776. By Andrew Sparrman, M.D., Professor of Physic at Stockholm, fellow of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Sweden, and Inspector of Its Cabinet of Natural History. Translated from the original Swedish. First English edition: 2 volumes, I. xxvii, 368. II. viii, 350, (ii errata and directions to the book-binder), pages, copper engraved frontispiece in volume 1, 9 engraved plates bound at the end of each volume, folding map, quarter brown leather with brown cloth sides, bookplates on both paste-down endpapers and a corresponding small stamp below the dates on the title pages. The leather is worn along the edges and on the raised bands, the folding map is torn at the first fold, pencil annotations in the margins throughout both volumes and with a page of pencil notes loosely inserted in each volume, light offsetting and foxing on the plates but overall the contents are in very good condition. Mendelssohn (S.) South African Bibliography, volume 2, pages 414–5, `On his arrival at the Cape on January10, 1772, Sparrman had only the small sum of twenty-five rix dollars in his possession, but the kindness of his reception and the hospitality of the colonists enabled him to pursue his researches and his expenses on his short expeditions were defrayed by the Swedish East India Company. About the latter end of the year, the English Exploring Expedition under Captain Cook visited Table Bay, and Sparrman was invited to accompany it and he sailed in the Resolution on November 22, 1772. He did not return to South Africa until March 1775, when he determined to make an expedition into the interior with a friend named Immelman, and they made a start on July 25, the journey being extended to April, 1776. They penetrated through Kaffararia as far as "Bruntjes Hoogte," and the narrative of their travels is interesting and instructive, and is described by Mr Theal as the "most trustworthy account of the Cape Colony and the various races of people residing in it" that had been published in the eighteenth century. Sparrman died at Stockholm in 1820 at the age of 73; his work, originally written in Swedish, was translated and published in French, English and German and went through several editions.’ Good London Printed for G.J. and J. Andersson (Charles John) LAKE NGAMI 8vo (250 x 165 mm) or Explorations and Discoveries, during four years` wanderings in the wilds of South Western Africa. Second edition: 546 pages, tinted lithographic frontispiece, 15 tinted lithographic plates, numerous wood engravings in the text, large folding map, half red calf, light red cloth sides, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, bookplate on the front paste-down endpaper and a corresponding small stamp below the date on the title page. The leather dry, the spine faded and the edges and corners worn. The frontispiece is cracked along the gutter owing to being too tightly bound, other than some occasional foxing the contents and plates are bright. Mendelssohn (Sydney) South African Bibliography, volume 1, pages 41. `The narratives describe two expeditions, one in which the author was accompanied by Mr Francis Galton which extended to Nangoro`s Werft in the Ovampo country and the other when he travelled by himself to Lake Ngami. The courage and endurance of the explorers were remarkable, and their sufferings from the dearth of water were at times very terrible. Few, if any books give so full and complete an account of Namaqualand, Damaraland, and the Ovampo country and the description of the fauna of these countries is absolutely unequalled. Galton sailed for England in early 1852 and Andersson commenced his journey to Lake Ngami in the early part of 1853, reaching the lake about the middle of the same year. He gives descriptive accounts of the ostrich, giraffe, rhinoceros and other animals and a full description of the native races.` This is Andersson`s major work and great care was taken over its publication. The tinted lithographs were executed by Joseph Wolfe and printed by Hanhart. Its success was somewhat overshadowed by Livingstone who had returned from Africa towards the end of 1856 and by the publication of his Missionary Travels the following year. It nevertheless ran to two impressions in 1856 and an American edition with wood engravings instead of the lithographs the following year. Good London Hurst and Blackett, Publishers 1856

Taylor, William P African Treasures. Sixty Years Among Diamonds and Gold 220 x 150 In his author`s note, written in Muizenberg in October 1931, Taylor writes: `Few men went to the diamond diggings as young as I was in 1870, and few men now living were at the goldfields of the Transvaal as early as I was - four years before the discovery of the Witwatersrand. There is perhaps no one else left who can tell so much from personal recollection of those days of romantic and adventurous treasure-seeking.` The navy blue cloth-boards, gilt to spine, are only very slightly stained and rubbed, the spine is unfaded and the lettering is bright. The binding is tight. There is an owner signature on the front free endpaper, with the endpapers otherwise unmarked and unfoxed. There is some light foxing, especially to early and late leaves of the 288 pp of text, and to the front and lower page edges. The book has a frontispiece and 23 other inserted single-sided plates on art paper. Very Good London John Long 1932
Headlam, Cecil The Milner Papers (2 vols: South Africa 1897-1899 and South Africa 1899-1905) 235 x 170 x 110 We have classified this work as history rather than biography because the author emphasises in his preface that he makes no judgments on his subject but tries to present his material in a sufficiently balanced way that his readers may reach their own judgments. This an attractive though probably not matched set [no owner name in either of the volumes, and see also below], which would look well in any library. However, age (80 years plus) and use - generally careful, though there are a few marking in ink in Vol 1 - have reduced its rating from very good to good-plus. This is a reasonable average for the set as a whole, but Vol 2 is closer to `very good`. Vol 1. The dark green cloth boards, gilt to spine, are only very lightly rubbed, more so the back board and the foot of the spine. The plain endpapers are unmarked, but with a small bookseller sticker on the front paste-down. However, the binding is cracked front and back, with the netting visible, though with little loss of strength. Gilt top edge. The ix + 591 pp of text and index are generally clean but there are some occasional marginal marks and underlining, and more in pen than pencil. Given the length of the book, these are no more than a small nuisance. There is a tissue-guarded frontispiece plus 7 other inserted plates, all sepia gravure. No foxing. Departures from the above in Vol 2. The boards are a little more rubbed and marked and the spine ends are lightly crushed. There is no cracking and the binding is tighter. Both endpapers carry a map of South Africa. The gilt top edge has lost its brightness and there is light foxing to the front and lower edges (but not elsewhere). Similarly, there are seven inserted sepia plates as well as the frontispiece, this time not guarded. We spotted no marginal or other markings on the xii + 592 pp of text and index - another indication that the two volumes may not have been in the same ownership. [Headlam went on to write volumes covering Milner`s life after his South African career.] Good+ London Cassell 1931 and 1933

Mendelssohn (Sydney) South African Bibliography, volume 2, page 29. `The preliminary chapters deal with opinions of the author on the origin of the Hottentots, and gives a synopsis of the early work of the London Missionary Society in South Africa, reference being made to the labours of Drs. Vanderkemp and Philip, and other pioneer missionaries who predated Mr. Moffat. The volume gives a valuable account of mission work among the Bechuanas, with notes on the customs of the natives, and a description of the earlier travels of the author... There are some particulars concerning Dr Andrew Smith`s expedition into the interior in 1835, and there is an ample account of the labours of the various missionary societies engaged amongst the Bechuanas, Matabeles, Basutos and other races at this period`. Colour Frontis by George Baxter (1804–1867), who was an English artist and printer based in London. He is credited with the invention of commercially viable colour printing. Though colour printing had been developed in China centuries before, it was not commercially viable. However, in early years of the 19th century the process of colour printing had been revived by George Savage, a Yorkshireman in London. It was to be Savage`s methods upon which Baxter, already an accomplished artist and engraver, was to improve. In 1828, Baxter began experimenting with colour printing by means of woodblocks. At 20 Baxter was illustrating books printed by his father; at 23 Baxter moved to London to be apprenticed to Samuel Williams, a wood engraver. In 1827 Baxter set up business on his own and married Mary Harrild, daughter of Robert Harrild, a printing engineer and a friend of Baxter’s father. Baxter now began to experiment with his own methods of colour printing – his first known colour print, Butterflies, was published in 1829. Baxter`s experiments first bore commercial fruit in 1834, with two small vignettes published in Mudie`s `British Birds`. In 1835 Baxter was granted Patent No. 6916 – Improvements in Producing Coloured Steel Plate, Copper Plate and other Impressions, which outlined the combined intaglio and relief process he would continue to use for the next thirty years. Baxter’s original patent ran for 14 years; after the renewal of his patent in 1849 for another five years he began to sell licenses for the use of his printing process to other printing firms. Despite his technical excellence and the general popularity of his prints, Baxter’s business was never profitable – his process was laborious and it seems likely that his perfectionism prevented him from completing many of his commissioned works on time. In 1860 he held a sale of all his stock and equipment, most of which was not sold. Eventually he sold his plates and blocks to the printer Vincent Brooks, who later republished some of Baxter’s images. Baxter was declared bankrupt in 1865 and died in 1867, after an accident involving a horse omnibus. Fair to Good London John Snow, Paternoster-Row 1842
