The 1847 Army List shows the services of Lieutenant (as he had then become) Arthur Oakes as follows:- “1841-1842. Took part in every action from the Cabul Pass to Cabul. Lieutenant Oakes was wounded at the storming of the Khoord Cabul Pass and also in the sortie on 1st April 1842 at Jellalabad”, The Defence of Jellalabad, the 13th Light Infantry being the only British unit present, was the one good thing to come out of the failure of the First Afghan War. AMBROSE HEAL: A light oak dresser with a raised back with a single shelf and seven cup hooks, the lower section with two short and a single long drawer above two panelled doors, with turned knob handles, on bracket feet, 48” wide.. This dresser appears to be a rare combination of dresser base no. 510 with the upper section more normally seen on the dresser no. 505. This would suggest it dates from 1905/1906 period when only a very small number of dressers of this type will have been manufactured, and it is possible that this combination was arrived at as the result of a client’s specific request.
