Served in Africa from 15/03/1915. Rose from Acting Corporal to Captain, by way of Colour Sergeant and R.S.M., between 07/11/14 and 25/09/16. Temporary Captain Somerset Light Infantry from 21/02/18. 8th Battalion S.L.I. war diary records that Capt.W. J. Bennett was wounded in action 06/09/19, at which time the battalion was heavily engaged at Havrincourt Wood.

A Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT Master stainless steel chronometer wristwatch, circa 1958, ref. 6542, serial no. 397XXX, the circular black dial with luminous baton and dot markers with outer seconds track, date window to three 'o' clock, centre sweep seconds and red 24hr indicator arrow hand, with blue and red 'Pepsi' bezel, 40mm diameter, set to a stainless steel oyster expanding bracelet with folding snap clasp Please Note: This watch does not come with any accompanying box or paperwork.The bezel is a later replacement, and watch face, glass and hands are also possibly later replacements.This watch ticks when wound. Clasp and bracelet stamped '580' and '78360'. Hour and minute hand complete a full 12-hour rotation with the date aperture changing accordingly. Glass, bezel and case are heavily scratched. Bracelet shows moderate amount of pulling, some light denting and heavy scratching. Strap is loose at five 'o' clock lug, due to the pin not being fully extended into the lug. Clasp is in working order. There is heavy dirt and grime build up around the bezel, case and strap. A Victorian diamond set ring, the broad band with central 'gypsy' set old cut diamond (measuring approx 0.25ct), all set in yellow metal, unmarked, approx size O, gross weight 10.7gmsCR;There is what appears to be a 'natural' on the outer facets of the diamond. The stone shows scratching and wear, but no large cracks, chips or losses. Claws show light-moderate wear, but the central stone appears secure. Band shows moderate scratching and wear commensurate with age and wear, but no splitting, thinning, resizing or repair.
A Victorian 18ct gold albert chain, comprising two trombone and belcher link chains, T-bar and lobster claw fasteners, each link stamped '18', T-bar and claws stamped 'TS', overall length 50cm, suspending a George III half-sovereign in an 18ct gold pendant mount, weight (excluding guinea) 73.6gmsCR: The two jump rings between the guinea and the chain show notable thinning/misshaping. A couple of the links show some light splitting. There is some scratching and wear commensurate with age and use throughout, but no signs of major damage, thinning or repair. A late Victorian silver ewer, Maurice Freeman, London 1899, of baluster form with shaped border and scrolling handle, embossed floral decoration, 16.7cm high, together with a George V silver bon-bon dish, S Blanckensee & Son Ltd, Birmingham 1948, of circular form with shaped border on three hoof feet, 10cm wide, and a George V silver epergne vase, Joseph Gloster Ltd, Birmingham 1911, the central trumpet vase with waved border upon a weighted circular base and three detachable spill vases, 19.8cm high (3)CR; Ewer: Denting and splitting to the lip of the spout. Signs of possible splitting, denting and repair to the neck. Possible signs of repair around the handle. Denting to the high-points of the embossed decoration. Denting around the base. Ewer wobbles on a level surface. Some loss of definition to the decoration.Dish: No large dents, splits or repair. Some light misshaping to the rim. Possible signs of solder repair to one foot, however the bowl does sit flat on a level surface. Scratching and light wear throughout, commensurate with age and use.Vase: Moderate denting to the shaped border and bowl of the principal vase. Stem, fittings and base in good order, no large dents, splits or signs of repair. Spill vases have a peppering of small dents to the bowls and borders, but no signs of splitting or repair. The spill vases wobbles slightly in their fittings, but appear secure.
An Art Deco ruby and diamond ring, the central (untested) rectangular cushion cut ruby measuring 8.95mm x 7.14mm x 4.41mm, with two mixed cut square diamonds to each shoulder, each measuring approximately 1.95mm x 1.95mm, set in white metal to a plain polished unmarked shank, ring size M 1/2, weight 3.8gmsCR; Please note: This ruby has not been laboratory tested for synthetic or natural origin.There are small chips and nibbles to the facet edges and girdle of the stone. the reverse of the stone has a few large chips, which are visible through the table of the stone. There are transparent/translucent needle like inclusions within the stone, visible under 10x. Diamonds to shoulders are present and in tact. Settings are in good order, all stones appear secure, no signs of splitting or repair. Shank shows light thinning, scratching and wear commensurate with age and use, but no signs of splitting or repair. The shank is unmarked, metal untested.

Both sapphires show some surface reaching cracks, some nibbles to the girdle and some abrasion to the facet edges. Claws show some wear, but stones appear secure. There are signs of resizing to the shank, and some thinning, but no splitting. Light scratching and wear throughout, commensurate with age and use. An early 20th century sapphire and diamond cluster ring, the central rectangular cushion mixed cut sapphire measuring 9.4mm L x 6.5mm - 7mm W x 3.2mm D, the platinum scalloped border set with ten round brilliant cut diamonds, tapered shoulders and plain polished 18ct yellow gold shank, size M 1/2, weight 3.6gms With accompanying report from The Gem & Pearl Laboratory, report no. 20998, that the stone is a natural sapphire, and shows no evidence of heat treatment. CR; Some light nibbling to the facet edges of the table and the girdle. All diamonds are present and in tact. There appears to be some splitting/minor loss to the platinum border, but all stones appear secure. Shank is in good order, no thinning, splitting, resizing or repair, light scratching and wear commensurate with age only. Each diamond weighs approximately 0.02 - 0.03 carats.
