Kate James came to Japan as the wife of a British Navy officer. She gave birth to three daughters in quick succession whom she would entertain with Japanese fairy stories she had translated herself. She was introduced to Hasegawa by Basil Hall Chamberlain and would become his most prolific author.

Though the booklet claims to be a later, revised and enlarged printing it seems likely that this claim is spurious and that this is in fact the first edition.
