Churchman's (W.A & A.C), Cigarettes - Stars Of Variety (unproduced series c1946) - Original Artwork - Max Miller - an original over-painted photograph artwork, completed by artists at Mardon, Son & Hall for production of the cigarette card series. Accompanied by a letter from Miller giving his approval of a sketch for use in the series and requesting '...I should like a larger one for display outside the theatre.' Artwork size: 8.5x4.5", approx. Thomas Henry Sargent (1894 – 1963), known professionally by his stage name Max Miller and billed as The Cheeky Chappie, was an English comedian often considered the greatest stand-up of his generation. He came from humble beginnings and left school at the age of twelve. At the outbreak of the First World War, he volunteered for the army. During his time in the forces, he started a troupe concert party. On leaving the army, he took up work as a light comedian, dancer, and singer. He toured extensively, appearing in variety, revues and by the early 1930s reached the top of the bill in the large music halls including the London Palladium.

Wilfred Hardy (1938 - 2016) - a piece of highly detailed, gouache original artwork painted by Wilfred Hardy, featuring the 'HMS Belfast', a Town-class light cruiser, built for the Royal Navy. The artwork is the original piece created for card 21 in the series 'Tom Thumb: Britain's Maritime History' set of 30 cards, issued by John Player & Sons in 1989. Mounted. Signed to the bottom right corner. Measuring approximately 30 cm x 42 cm including the mount. Wilfred Hardy (1938 - 2016) was a British artist who specialised in painting aircraft, producing posters and private commissions. He contributed many painted pages to Treasure, Look and Learn, Eagle and Speed and Power magazines. He also produced work for the Royal International Air Tattoo, and in 1979 he designed the special paint scheme for a Royal Air Force McDonnell Douglas Phantom FGR.2 which was to re-enact the Transatlantic flight of Alcock and Brown for the 60th anniversary of the crossing.

The pair were known as the 'Sweethearts in Song' and were among the most famous and popular British musical acts of the 1940s.
