Chappe, two pages, small 4to, Paris, 5th January 1802, to Citizen Le Mat (?), head of office at the Ministry of the Navy, on printed stationery featuring an attractive vignette of Mercury holding a telegraph, in French. Chappe writes in his capacity as Administrateur des Lignes Telegraphiques regarding Alexis Grosselin, a naval artillery soldier in Toulon, and states ´Je m´interesse beaucoup a ce jeune homme; je vous prie de vouloir bien mettre a M. de Grosselin, sa mere, qui vous donnera cette lettre, a meme d´obtenir son conge´ (Translation: ´I am very interested in this young man; I would ask you to kindly give M. de Grosselin, his mother, who will give you this letter, the opportunity to obtain his leave´). DUFY RAOUL: (1877-1953) French Fauvist painter. A good printed folio folding menu for Le Diner de la Bonne Cuisine, to be served on 21st May 1935 at 9pm, in aid of the Cercle Ronsard, featuring a traditional oxtail stew (´Queue de Boeuf à l´ancienne´), fresh pea and parsley cream soup (´Crème de pois frais au cerfeuil´), stuffed suckling pig with sage (´Porcelet farci à la Sauge´) accompanied by asparagus, a Rouen-style duckling (´Caneton rouennais facon du Chef´), salad, and a dessert of pineapple with blackberries (´Ananas voiles aux Morères´), also including a wine and drinks list featuring Pouilly-Fuissé 1933, Chateau la Mission Haut-Brion 1923, various champagnes, a Fine Hennessy and more. The following three pages of the menu are dedicated to text, in French, relating to three of the courses, each featuring a printed drawing by Dufy at the base, including a fisherman at sea, a number of piglets feeding from a sow, and five ducks. The menu is signed and inscribed by Dufy in bold pencil to the front and at the head the artist has added two original pencil sketches in his hand of seashells. An attractively designed and printed menu, enhanced by Dufy´s original drawings. DELACROIX EUGENE: (1798-1863) French artist of the Romantic school. An excellent autograph statement signed, Eug. Delacroix, to a heavy card stock 4to page removed from an album and featuring a fine photograph of the artist to the centre, n.p., 29th May 1863, in French. In bold, dark ink Delacroix has penned five lines of text, in full, ´Il est pueril de remonter le courant des ages et de faire revivre dans un art les traditions d´une autre epoque afin de se donner un air d´originalite. La posterite n´admire que les ouvrages qui ont ete de leur temps´ (Translation: ´It's puerile to go back in time and revive the traditions of another era to give oneself an air of originality. Posterity only admires works that were of their time´). The artist´s thoughtful statement is attractively written beneath an original sepia 2 x 3.5 (approximately 5.5 x 9 cm) albumen print of Delacroix by Etienne Carjat, the image depicting the painter standing in a three-quarter length pose wearing an overcoat. A rare and wonderful presentation featuring an interesting text relating to art signed by Delacroix. Some very light, extremely minor age wear to the edges of the page, VGProvenance: The present photograph and inscription were removed from an album belonging to Charles Scitivaux (1802-1869) who worked as a Receiver of Finances in Paris. Scitivaux had many friends in the political, artistic and literary world of his time. Towards the end of his life, he asked various luminaries to write a thought under their photograph in his album, which also included entries by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Gioachino Rossini, Theophile Gautier, Alexandre Dumas, Gustave Dore, Nadar and others.Etienne Carjat (1828-1906) French photographer, caricaturist and journalist.
ASQUITH H. H.: (1852-1928) British Prime Minister 1908-16. L.S., H. H. Asquith, one page, 8vo, n.p. (London), 12th June 1893, to Paul Langer, on the blind embossed stationery of the House of Commons. Asquith expresses his regret and informs his correspondent that ´the Galleries are already full for the whole of this week, the demand for Orders being very great´, and is therefore unable to comply with Langer´s request, although would have been happy to have done so if it had been possible. Leoncavallo sends his best wishes and new year greetings to his correspondent and refers to his hopes regarding World War one, stating `Chère Mademoiselle, A vous tous mes meilleurs souhaits de gloire et de bonheur pour la nouvelle année qui commence avec le voeu que surgisse bientôt l´aube de la Victoire pour nos chères patries!...´ (Translation: "Dear Miss, To all of you my best wishes for glory and happiness for the new year which begins with the wish that the dawn of Victory will soon arise for our dear homelands!...") Paper with a P.M. Fabriano watermark. With blank integral leaf. Very small light creasing, otherwise GMarthe Chenal (1881-1947) French operatic Soprano. Chenal was admired not only for her excellent singing but also her dramatic prowess, with a number of critics comparing her to the great French dramatic actress Sarah Bernhardt. A remarkably attractive woman, Chenal was dubbed by the international press as "the most beautiful woman in Paris". She was noted for her rendition of French anthem La Marseilleise.
